people are already complaining about Yamatonokami and Kashuu's dynamic because it seems to be a reverse of what j-fandom/doujinshi assumed and went with.

there's still time for us to learn more shades of their relationship, but yeah, the idea that Kashuu is openly resentful and hostile towards Yamatonokami has been thoroughly jossed, probably for the best.

as someone who has definitely written more than one resentful style fic, I have to admit I personally don't feel very miffed at all. I'm thrilled to see them being so sweet to each other, and I appreciate the route the anime is taking so far.

I mean, I'll probably still write some dark and twisted fic, because it's fun! if anything, this makes it more interesting to make up fucked-up shit.

so yeah, while there are complainers, I'm hoping that there will be plenty of people who are chill and just happy we're getting new stuff.

...so? I mean I'm mostly in it for the twisted, I don't really ship anything, but like... if I don't piss in anyone's cereal by acting huffy and offended about the anime, who cares why?

Maybe I should clarify that I didn't mean I was going to be ooc on purpose in a game or something. I was talking PSLs and fanfic. Which is where I keep my grimdark shit regardless, because I realize that no cast wants to deal with endless angst jfc.

I'm also glad for the difference, but I can see why people find it jarring. Even though him being openly hostile to Yamato is a stupid headcanon he was still really calm and mellow compared to how the game dialogue made him seem. Maybe I'm misremembering but I recall him being dramatic, vain, and a bit whiny and hotheaded. They remembered the vanity, but his overall even-tempered behavior in the anime wasn't what I was expecting.

like another anon said, there's still time for his personality to develop over the series. also, as a lead character, it's likely his more over-the-top aspects are going to be more subdued until they're comedically or dramatically relevant.

His lines read that way but listening to the audio files really does make a lot of them lazy/casual/mellow. I often have to go over them again and remind myself he's not nearly as much of a drama queen as fandom plays up.

Fanworks play up his dramatic side and his insecurities, and honestly when it dominates what the actual game tells you, then people start taking it in as close to canon. I'm going to bet he'll start to crack a little in Hanamaru when he's injured, because yeah that's where the dramatic shit he says comes in. Being abandoned is a completely genuinely concern of his, but he's honestly over that time when Okita abandoning him and says as much. He's more mature than the fandom gives him credit for though.

Yeah, the traits (whiny, dramatic, vain, hotheaded etc) are all there, but he's definitely not as high energy or extreme as fandom tends to portray. Still, it feels like they toned it down even more for the anime, but like above anon said they probably did that because he's a lead so they'll come into play for comedy/drama.

As much as I like j-fandom's interpretation, it's kind of nice to see such a sweet take on their dynamic tbh.

That said, Hanamaru won't be the most official anime adaptation. UFOtable's is the one that's going to be overseen directly by DMM (Hanamaru wasn't), so there's still the chance of Hanamaru canon being jossed. I think most people going into a fandom like this would be, or should have been, ready to be jossed though.
