Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

So peppering swastikas (yes, the clockwise ones, the actual Nazi symbol) is an okay "trendy" icon to use to decorate your journal and your subject line in memes now?

Fucking disgusting. This player should be ashamed of themselves.

I mean, the character in question is an actual Nazi.

Which makes it ok for the player to glibly use Nazi iconography OOC for cutesy decorations how exactly??

i get what you're saying, anon, but this is not the hill you want to die on. rip van winkle from hellsing is kind of skeevy by herself, considering she's literally composed of the author's fetishes and moe ideals.

it's not like there's respectful material there to begin with,

jesus christ i just googled her

how tf is anything about this character "moe"

the author of hellsing is really weird

and look at her death scene

(the ova version is worse, she's basically blushing and orgasming as she's being devoured)

and her uniform she wears in the prequel

I know nothing about the character tbh, though I know that Hellsing has Nazi characters.

I think that's beside the point here though. A subject header is an OOC statement.

This is no more okay than saying "Oh I like this Hellsing character who's a Nazi so I'm going to put swastikas on my backpack and hang Nazi flags in my room, but tee-hee it's only because of the character!"

It's no more okay than when Hetalia cosplayers did photoshoots of themselves doing Nazi salutes because tee-hee the countries were Nazi lands during WWII.

RPing a character does not mean that you suddenly get to conflate IC and OOC just because you like some author's work of fiction.

because it suits the character in question?

you haven't even adequately explained how it's terrible and wrong. is it glorifying the nazis? is it insensitive to the crowd of ww2 survivors hanging around dwrp?

maybe whoever's playing rip van winkle just likes how it looks, god knows she wouldn't be the first person to think the nazis were stylish

driveby anon to this, but if you think only ww2 survivors can be traumatized or offended by a swastika, you're not really up on your racism, are you? you think nazis are the only ones to ever use it? neonazis? kkk? which is prevalent in today's society? hello? ringing a bell?

it's classess and tasteless in a public forum. see: the nazi obscure ebophile character that got raked across the coals for existing.

honestly? the kkk and neonazis have no societal power. (other far-right nationalistic groups may, but none of them are quite at the level of consciously taking on nazi stylings.) living on eggshells because of groups with no power seems silly at best

really Bernie, BLM, tumblr, and the left like to use those as boogeyman because it works and they think they are an actual threat at large.

The KKK is down to a handful of members that can't even operate outside of the shadows of their basements and abandoned farms. Why do you think it was a big deal and they suddenly got even more quiet once a list of names was uncovered and posted a couple of years ago.

and as soon as someone is confirmed to be a neonazi in real life nazi hunting season opens up again and a body ends up getting buried.

they are still a menance to the area they are in but they can't do anything to change and we are pretty much just watching their death throes

the kkk and neonazis have no societal power

spoken like someone who doesn't live in the rural south

can confirm that the kkk has sympathizers in our local politics and police squad, if not actual members. i have relatives who are or were members. hate groups like that are still a plague.

this comment is weird because while there's no ww2 survivors rping on dw i am positive there are jewish rpers whose families were affected by the holocaust

anyway

it's tacky and tryhard more than anything, and if anyone's uncomfortable seeing it itd be a dick move to tell them to get over it

but it seems to me that there's nothing about a swastika that's particularly offensive compared to everything about rip van winkle

I haven't "adequately explained" how using a symbol of hate, fascism, and genocide because you think it's cute and stylish is glorifying the movement whose LITERAL FLAG it was (and, btw, continues to be for neo-nazis now)??

LMFAO are you kidding me? You must be fucking high.

Jewish anon here, and stating right off the bat that we're all going to have different opinions on this sort of thing so I'm not speaking for other Jewish people here.

For me, this really toes the line. At first reading through this thread I thought it was all in-journal use, such as in the layout, and imo that's whatever territory since it does thematically suit the character. Same with if it'd been used as part of icon keywords.

But using a swastika in the subject line on a bakerstreet meme just tips over into bad taste, because it isn't at all necessary for formatting or anything other than screaming LOOK AT MY EDGE~

So yeah. I wouldn't say outright horribly offensive (it would've been if the character hadn't been a canon nazi,) but still gross.

Re: http://bakerstreet.dreamwidth.org/3488257.html?thread=1632121601

(Anonymous) 2016-07-04 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here.

Mostly the reason I brought up the journal was because it's sort of echoing the use in the subject line of the meme, so it's not like the player is only doing it one place. They're putting it all over, including in their profile's name field.

That means that every time the player sends a tag or a message or anything even the email notif is going to show up "卐 Obersturmführer Rip Van Winkle 卐 replied to a comment you left...." Can you imagine opening your email and seeing that? I would sure as hell be offended.

The character might be a Nazi, but that should be even more reason for the player to behave with caution and respect. Just because someone's going to RP a Nazi character does not make it ok for them to go around touting Nazism or waving Nazi symbols in people's faces OOCly.

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2016-07-04 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't notice the namefield and that's going a bit too far as well. My general rule is that if you have to go looking (checking their journal, their icons, etc) it's sketchy but not much else, but if they're shoving it at you (subject lines, name field showing up in notifs) it's tasteless at best.

Personally the whole thing doesn't really offend me, probably because I can't get too worked up about something that's pretty tame in comparison to other antisemitism I end up dealing with, but I want to be clear that that doesn't at all mean I think you're wrong for calling them out. In fact, I think that's great and dragging people for being antisemitic, racist, or whatever else is totally warranted. I just wanted to weigh in with insight from someone who's Jewish.

(As a side note, the conversation upthread about the kkk/neonazis is way more offensive imo. Whether or not the organizations themselves hold much power, the people who follow their lifestyles are still very much a problem for many minority groups and downplaying that is disgusting.)
