Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I've been interested in Ryslig since it first came out, and now I kind of want to finally bite the bullet and app in with an OC, but the game's gotten so big.

Can I hear from some other newbies (and other OC players, if possible) about what it's been like?

or players in general, that's cool too, I'm sure lots of people could have good advice

I've found it fairly welcoming to my OC but frankly, too big to handle easily. Even when I got a small group of friends to RP with, events are huge and participation from players tends to be high but lack of mod participation means almost all events stall halfway through. If you're okay with that, or can find a small group to focus on instead of the hugeness of whole game, it can be a lot of fun. There isn't as much of a medium divide as in other games.

I'm a former player, but I had an OC while I was here. People here don't have the 'Ew, OCs, ew' attitude that's so prevalent in DWRP, so you should fit in well enough if you get in. Be warned that the mods are nitpicky about OC apps, so your chances of being pegged with revisions or rejection are pretty high.

As for the game itself, if you're hoping for an overarching, coherent plot this ain't the game for you. Ryslig's plot fell apart a while back and the mods either won't or can't get it back on track. Mod plots tend to just sputter out and/or are handwaved with the outcome the mods want. Don't expect them to have any impact on things a few months down the line either. Player plots are far and few between but they're more enjoyable than the main plot to participate in.

It's your choice whether or not to get involved in the god faction stuff, but many people don't and again, it has no bearing on anything. The mods have the attention span of a goldfish, and tend to flit off to the next shiny idea with annoying frequency.

My best advice is for you to go in with a plan for your character. Decide what kind of story arc you want them to follow while in Ryslig. For example, are they going to lament the loss of their humanity, or do you want them to embrace being a monster? Is one going to follow the other? Would they actually devote themselves to a god? Things like that.

tl;dr OCs are welcome here, but the mod plot is a shitshow. You'll be far better served to make your own fun here.

to all of this. i've heard people describe ryslig as a musebox with apps at this point, and it's pretty much true. you get what you put into it, and if you go in with a plan for your character rather than relying on mod-run events, you'll have a much better time of things.

as has been said above, don't get involved in the main plot if you can help it. it goes nowhere, has very little impact on anything, and we as players cannot affect it in any meaningful way. the gods are nonentities and 90% of the game doesn't even give a shit about the god war anymore.

avoid bloody bones-related anything. you'll be better off for it.

tag out a lot, try to build a circle of CR and play out your own story arcs with them. if you do that and treat the game as a sandbox, it can be pretty fun.

i'm not a current player, but i apped with an oc and the reception was great! i had people tagging my top level, welcoming me to the game, it was pretty lovely. (i also tagged around a lot, i'm sure that had something to do with it.) when i dropped it wasn't anything to do with the game not being a good fit for the character, and if i came back again i'd definitely do an oc.
