Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

this is more of a general comics question than marvel specifically, but for the players who play characters that have been around for decades, do you read the old gold/silver age issues for your characters? is it really necessary, or is reading through summaries acceptable? i honestly just can't handle the over the top dialogue and cheese, and it seems like a lot of characters have had significant voice shifts from that period, anyway.

i personally did read most of the old stuff, but i was paranoid about missing interactions, since i play major characters who know a lot of people, and i've had more minor characters (i.e. people who had to go back and read the old stuff) come at me with stuff that happened in 1983 or something.

but that said most people won't know if you only read the recent stuff. if you're upfront about it people will probably let you know about anything that might be helpful. i've always found comics players to be pretty chill about that.

I read the major old stuff, haven't gone through all of the filler. In my case, some of the old stuff has actually been retconned out anyway, but even if I play someone who's perfectly playable on new stuff alone, I like having an idea of how things have changed.

As other anon said, though, most comics players (in my experience) are super chill about understanding that especially with a long-running character, it's pretty damned hard to hunt down and read every appearance, and are willing to fill you in if you're missing something relevant to their character.

i used to play someone who's been around since the sixties, and i did skip their silver age stuff. well, to be accurate, i tried reading it, but got tired about twelve issues in and wasn't getting anything important to their history, personality, or voice.

that said, i read as much of the 70s and 80s stuff as i could find, but i tend to find the bronze age a lot more fun than the silver age, even if it can get really wordy sometimes. i also read more summaries than actual comics from the 90s, 90s marvel was a harsh place.

i would definitely recommend reading about the last ten years worth of what is relevant to your character, and major storylines, but also the storylines that interest you. there are a lot of things where you can get by just reading summaries, but summaries can also let you know about things you might actually want to read! some of it, you can fill yourself in on as you go, you don't need to know every little thing before you start playing.

as long as you've got a good foundation for their character, it's okay to play a little loose with comics characters who have been around a long time. the professional writers absolutely do.

IMO it really depends on the character and your own preferences. Most characters' earlier years have been given updated retellings, and/or retold through modern flashbacks. (And these can contradict each other, because comics.)

So it's your choice irt what you want to read, and what you want to take as canon for your interpretation.

(I use Bronze Age canon for some DC characters because I find a lot of those comics enjoyable, and I can see a lout of the foundation there for modern interpretations; I don't really use Silver Age canon for X-Men because most of the characters are drastically different, and also sixties X-Men sucked.)
