Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Any advice on picking superpowers for people interested in apping a character that normally doesn't have any?

My suggestion would be to pick something that gives you the most interesting fodder to play with for the character. The mods are good at splitting up characters into groups and providing different types of threats for players to choose from during plots. So it's usually best to try to figure out what would be most fitting or interesting for the specific character rather than trying to predict what will be most useful.

Also the mods are really helpful with answering powers questions, so if you're having trouble, don't hesitate to go to the mod contact and ask them. I think most of us have done it at some point. They also let people change powers if a power isn't working out, so keep in mind that if you try something and it doesn't work well, you can always change it in the future without much fuss.

Go with something you think would be cool. It doesn't have to be interesting or unique, just roll with it. Doesn't matter whether it's boring or weird, just that you think you'd have fun with it. Just keep in mind that some of the 'traditional' powersets might have to be broken up into multiple powers, while other powersets can be combined into one.

For example, super strength and invulnerability? Two separate powers. Being slightly faster, stronger, and tougher than normal? 'Enhanced physiology'.

One possibility is to go to http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Random and see what you end up with, but there's been a lot of really stupid shit added there recently as people take established powers, insist they're different because this comic/video game/manga handles them differently, and creates a new article for them. Or creates needless sub-articles. You might end up with a few garbage results, but keep trying or just do a wiki dive until you find a result you like.

Both bits of advice people have given so far are good. Really, it's just best to go with what's most fun or interesting to you for the character to have. Seconding the use of the powers wiki but an easier way to use it might be starting from this page:

http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Supernatural_Powers_and_Abilities

It has all the categories of superpowers and the superpowers listed underneath mostly exclude the useless sub-articles or you can at least tell from the title what they are to skip them. Ironically, the example pic on that wiki page is of the Legion.
