Agreed. We could always call it a character list or roster, but nope, these are muses come to touch our privileged minds and make us write fountains of beautiful prose. Bloom to the sun and wilt when they pass, only to come back to full turgidity under the next shiny thing.

i might be showing my age here, but i'm pretty sure the "muselist" terminology actually evolved from soulbonding crap back in earliest days of lj... (like from around 2001-ish) which dovetails nicely with the "headspace" shit they're apparently using now.

in ye olden times, people on lj would have "muses" (which was what they called soulbonds back then), and would branch into the rp communities to let their soulbonds interact with other soulbonds and rp characters. the "muse" and "muselist" terminology started to catch on, and for some reason non-soulbonders started using it.

it evolved from the mun/muse desogmations that came in with people who got their start on other platforms where, for the most part, people didn't have ooc accounts and tended to be known primarily by which character the played. (some places used mun/pup(pet) to differentiate, but pup's largely fallen out of fashion here.)

"muse" has been pretty common rp parlance since at least the early 90s, when i got my start, and i wouldn't be all that surprised if it was in use before that - the "mun" part, at least, has definitely been a part of SCA/LARPer terminology for approximately forever as a shortening of "mundane". the visibility of soulbonders is a more recent phenomenon. they existed, but not in the numbers or at the volume necessary to influence early rp terminology.

seems to be more of a western mmo thing, i remember seeing people use it in city of heroes

but in other games made in japan and korea i saw people say "chara" or "char" more

it's waaaaay older than wow. think MUDs/MUSHs.

there were games back when you had to listen to your modem getting it up the ass via your phone line, and toon was used then.

most of the MU* games I was on used alt.

to be fair, a lot of dwrp terminology looks completely idiotic from the outside too.

This is all pretty fascinating, the soulbonders and the old fashioned LARP and stuff. I remember pup and toon and other things, and I'm glad they've fallen off. At least 'muse' by itself isn't often used anymore. Muselist feels like a relic that's hanging on by dint of being a little nicer on the ears than char(acter) list.

it's habit by now it's not going to change lol it's been called headspace for more than ten years. there are a lot of things they "should" do but it's the most stubborn rp community out there so good luck.

What's with the outing bit then? Do they mean don't link anyone's muselist?

they mean don't come in and say "mun x plays muses a, b, and c." muselists aren't a common thing over there and they're all private about who they rp. it's p pointless, tbh, because there aren't that many muns left there.
