Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Re: Most preferred type of translation/localisation?

It actually depends on whether the work is a sub or dub pretty much, as in whether the Japanese would still be present and able to be heard. With subs, I prefer minimal editing, just enough to make it readable and natural sounding. If the sub is of something that has received an official localization then keep the official English terms.

With a dub or a text work where the Japanese won't be present, I'm a bit more flexible about it, but the overall meaning still needs to be present. No deleting scenes, changing characterization, etc. I'm not going to gripe about Capcom deciding in Ace Attorney to change ramen to burgers, because the overall meaning of Maya asking Phoenix to treat her to fast food is present. I also like it when they can change the puns to ones that work in English even if the word the pun is based off of is slightly different. Ace Attorney is definitely a game series where it wouldn't be half as good if the translation was literal.

AA is a great example, I've got all the manga with the translator notes in the back and I am highly impressed that they managed to make the name puns make sense in English and correspond well to the Japanese name puns. Not every translation or sub is that clever, though, so I usually have reservations about changing puns and jokes until I can find out if it's still true to the original spirit.
