why is it that everyone on my plurk who works at starbucks a huge grumpy asshole all the time. is there something about being a starbucks barista that makes you turn into the most oppressed retail worker of all time and you are forced to complain about it constantly every moment of your life.

ive had retail job/food service and there sure are parts that suck and customers are jerks everywhere but damn i also never gave that much of a shit about whether or not someone wanted soy milk or not.

i knew someone who worked at starbucks and after hearing about some of the things they had to deal with, it sort of makes sense. you're on your feet for the whole time (barring breaks) and people are the most entitled fucks about their coffee. they can be incredibly rude and short tempered and very quick to blame everything, even their own mistakes, on the barista. even sitting and waiting for her, i've seen some rude as fuck behavior. and that's not taking into consideration the 'regulars'; the ones that are regularly rude every day, or regularly hit on her even though she tries to get them to stop. or crazy people that come in and steal creamers or w/e else she has to deal with. day after day after day, with random shifts that can have her closing two nights in a row and opening three right after or a close, an open, a close, an open back to back and it's just... yeah. it sucks you dry. depending on where a store is and how popular it is, how busy it gets, and what the majority of the clientele is, this doesn't surprise me at all.

Yeah, but there's shit in literally every retail job thats like that. Stuff that's ultra annoying and warrants some complaining/venting, but starbucks baristas do it SO MUCH MORE more than even any other non-starbucks baristas this is a sbux exclusive phenomenon

there's more starbucks out there and they're generally more active. then there's the 'secret menu' bullshit some people throw at them, like it's actually a thing. like another anon said, they're venting. it's a shitty job with not enough pay.

and if you really think they're on their feet more than anyone else, that's cute. that's really cute. i was backroom stock and i knew a cashier and guess what? most don't do just that and most are way more stressed because of all the rules that aren't really rules like no drinking or eating, no keeping a purse anywhere or any other kind of personal items, talk to customers and take them where they need to go but also don't leave the space you're working, clean your working space, and none of it matters how much time you have.

i worked exclusively in meat at wal-mart and if i was leaving to go on my break i was told to help and take anyone wherever they needed to be or find someone who knew. that would count as part of my break and if i went over, i'd be in huge trouble. you know what happens if someone saw me not helping a customer? i get in trouble. you know what happened if i had an accident? i get in trouble for the slip and cause the entire store to "lose" the bonus we'd have if we got to a certain amount of days without an accident (which happens, when you're cutting meat, too). the big guys pit the lower guys against each other and make them feel like if they fuck up they're fucked. and i don't get a tip for anything i do and i promise you when i worked in the deli on occasion or in cakes during certain times? we'd have huge lines and less than what we were legally supposed to have there at all times (because of stoves, freezers, etc. you're supposed to have someone watching or making sure certain things are done at all times).

basically lmfao maybe someone has it shittier than others, but most sbux workers get paid about as much as the average secretary, if not more. yeah you're gonna be stressed from the flow of business early mornings but you are getting paid enough to make up for that via tip. my sister averaged $25 an hour in the mornings when she worked at one. when she worked at another comparable chain she made a little less. evenings at sbux i think she evened out like $15-20 depending and the other chain she made more since they were a little more focused on things that weren't drinks.

what i'm trying to say is all fucking retail/food service is shit and everyone's excuse is the same.

simmer down, beavis. i didn't say they had it so much worse than anyone else. i'm giving examples of why someone working at starbucks might bitch about it. retail/food service IS shit, and if people want to complain about work or family or whatever's up their butt, they should certainly be allowed to on their own goddamn plurk. it's not like they're going into op's plurk about kittens and crying over the milk they had to pour that day.

lmao $25 an hour?? check your math, anon. or your memory. there's absolutely no way she was making that much in tips.

base barista pay is $10/hr. even if she was a shift with a couple years under her belt making $15/hr base, that's still ten dollars an hour in tips. working full time puts that at four hundred dollars a week in tips. are you kidding me? I work full time at one of the biggest, busiest sbux in the region and I'm lucky if I make $50 in tips a week. (also, ftr, tips don't get split into morning/evening like that, at least not since I've been working. it all goes in the same pot.)

like I feel you on sbux baristas being whiny babies. we attract a disproportionate number of middle/upper-class educated kids looking to make some money between college and grad school or careers, compared to a lot of other service jobs. so yeah, privileged kids are gonna whine more about their shitty service job because they're spoiled pissbabies.

but it's hilarious that you think we make that much money. if your sister was making $400-600/wk in tips, hook me up, bro. I wanna know what location she worked at. I could put a downpayment on a condo making that kind of bank. lmfao.

The baristas on my timeline bitch aaaaaalll the time about stupid shit all the time. Not even bad customers but just like totally minor things that they can't get over. tbh, starbucks is one of the better retail jobs i've had, but experiences can vary from place to place of course. benefits are great as long as you can take advantage of them, which already puts em way above a lot of other retail positions.

i live in a very affluent area and so the customer base is pretty much entitlement central, but i've never hated it. if nothing else, some of the stuff i've seen has given me some good stories and i look back on it more in a "haha wow, that shit was fucked up" sort of way.
