Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

You're talking more about OOC preferences towards kinks. Mod and up-thread anon are talking about attempting to rule out OOC kink preferences in a world where the IC consequences (whether via including aphros or simply by predilections of the character) would not only not jive with the setting that mod is trying to build, but might derail the action, should those behaviours get caught out.

Ia about allowing various kinks in a smut game being a generally nice premise, and tbh the idea of another smut game fuelling/fuelled by gods etc. doesn't strike my fancy... but I can see the merit of trying to build a world in which aphros aren't used as artificial icebreakers. Surely there's another way to build connections and smutty relationships that doesn't break OOC boundaries with characters and doesn't involve the game forcing them to get in the groove against their will?

I got three tags out of my PSL partner before they disappeared. Is that early enough that asking them about it is going to make them uncomfortable about having to possibly lie about my shit writing, or should I take a stab at it anyways? I was enjoying the premise!

Actually I think the mobile game is pretty fun. Still has the pitfalls that all mobile games have but for what it is its pretty good. Not happy that it's story connects to the rest of the series however. The whole KH plot had strung along through too many years and platforms... it's basically a zombie now. Can't blame you for wanting to avoid it.

I really liked the smut thread we had going earlier this year and I miss playing with you. If by chance I wasn't the reason you dropped things, and you'd like to play out something again, please pm me. I'm too afraid to come across as a creep. :x

dc comic icons

Anyone know where I can find icons from DC comics? I'm looking mostly for the Batfamily (Bruce, Dick, and Damian).

Thanks!

Re: Most preferred type of translation/localisation?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-18 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
(Japanese speaker who does a lot of volunteer translating here...)

I like when localisations transform the text into something that may be different from the source but does a better job of giving off the right tone than a literal translation would. For example, a lot of jokes just don't translate well at all, and if you want any kind of comedic impact in your comedy series, you gotta change things around.

I think footnotes should be avoided in any kind of translation. If you have to stop and tell your audience what the words you're using mean, you're probably using the wrong words.

I think name changes should usually be avoided, but there are some cases when the source material has names that sound way too stupid in English, and those often need to be changed in order to make it believable that characters are talking about things without cracking up.

I also think that what makes a good translation can vary depending on the type of media. I like video subtitles to be more literal/direct, because it's jarring when the text says something completely different from what the viewer's hearing. On the opposite end, novels/short stories should have a lot of liberties taken because what makes for good sentence structure in Japanese sounds awkward as hell in English.

I like their RP generally, but sometimes their tags can be difficult to read, and I have to reread it several times to try to understand what's being said, not just in quotes but in the meta-information.

Re: Most preferred type of translation/localisation?

It actually depends on whether the work is a sub or dub pretty much, as in whether the Japanese would still be present and able to be heard. With subs, I prefer minimal editing, just enough to make it readable and natural sounding. If the sub is of something that has received an official localization then keep the official English terms.

With a dub or a text work where the Japanese won't be present, I'm a bit more flexible about it, but the overall meaning still needs to be present. No deleting scenes, changing characterization, etc. I'm not going to gripe about Capcom deciding in Ace Attorney to change ramen to burgers, because the overall meaning of Maya asking Phoenix to treat her to fast food is present. I also like it when they can change the puns to ones that work in English even if the word the pun is based off of is slightly different. Ace Attorney is definitely a game series where it wouldn't be half as good if the translation was literal.

Still uncomfortable because I'm British and Andromeda is Space Colonialism. I don't know if they're going to do something insightful with it or play the whole thing entirely straight (aside from a midway scene where the main character stares out of a space window and mournfully gasps, "but what if... we are the aliens?").

One big thing has changed: the original Macross was a parody of mass-marketed pop culture, which is why it rags on romantic cliches (the famous "love triangle") and idols in general. In Macross, pop music literally solves war.

Then that thing happened where people enjoyed the text more than the subtext and the songs sold like hot cakes.

Still doesn't excuse anon holding up Basara of all people as their example. He's the exemplar of the Nineties pin-up idol: a handsome "bad boy" singer who plays by his own rules.

Re: KINKS YOU WANT TO PLAY

(Anonymous) 2016-06-18 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
M/M, a young waiter makes a huge embarrassing mistake while serving a wealthy and politically powerful costumer. The owner is desperate to make up for the mistake and offers the waiter as a sexual servant for the rest of the evening.

Kinks I'm interested in are bondage, underage, gags, virginity, clothed sex, and face slapping. Noncon, dubcon, and fully consensual are all okay! I can play either role and I prefer drawn PBs. Leave a sock!

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2016-06-18 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
You really don't?

Fine. You gotta room with either a foot fetishist or a rapist. Pick.

That's the ic difference (wah, wah, the other characters wouldn't have to, like, know. Yeah, but the players would, so the narrative turns from rooming with Todd, to rooming with Todd, who rapes people, possibly people I know and care about, without my knowing. Something I'd play tbh. But not in a happy cuddle-sex-game. And I don't blame people who wouldn't want to play it at all, anywhere, either).

OOCly, the potential mod not being comfortable with it, along with, what I'm guessing, is a small but not insubstantial minority of rpers and an even bigger group of us who don't mind consent-only is really plenty reason enough on its own to make a game without noncon.

>people generally play out dubcon/noncon IN GAMES with a little fucking taste

Yes, I know. I play noncon. And?

>there's a difference in a game that forces rape all the time [...] and a game that you join with consent where bad things can happen and dubcon/noncon might be one of those

Yes. And neither are games the Op is interested in modding or people squicked/legit triggered (as in diagnosed with actual ptsd) by rape want to play in, so... your point?

>and expect to hear people bitching about, 'but my whole canon is 16/17'

Lots of games have been or are 18+ for player and characters both. If people want to embarrass themselves by bitching about it, they're welcome to, I guess. But honestly, I haven't seen too many players keen on pitching a fit about 18+ rules, especially since for most canons, you can just age characters up by a year or two without problem.

>rl rape is terrible and not a kink, roleplaying it is (even in rl scenarios between consenting parties)

I'm aware. As is, I believe, everyone else here. That still doesn't mean every game in existence has to cater to/allow that specific kink.

Seriously, I'm mad. When people complained about noncon sex games, I was first in line to tell them to let people have their fun and to make their own games without rape-play or fuck-or-die if it bothered them. Now they do, and they get whined at, sniped at and argued with by people like you who seemingly can't fathom the idea that people want to play smut in a magical adventure-land while fighting for light, love and peace for all without dealing with motherfucking rape. Not as a threat, not as a possibility, not as something that happened to someone else, whether you know it or not.
And that they are fucking entitled to fucking do that if they fucking want to.

>it shouldn't matter

That's NOT your call.

Probably just yet another OC player with a persecution complex. Probably not even in the game.
