Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Unless it's seriously rule or game-breaking, always come at player requests or questions with an attitude of "how can I say yes to this". You're the one who knows your background game mechanics, your plot goals, you should be able to find ways to avoid breaking those or even maybe adding to them through player character interaction. It's much, much better to answer requests with "no, but they can do this and this thing which is very close to what you're asking for" than a hard no every time. Your players will throw you curveballs and interesting viewpoints on your game that you never thought of. Work with them, don't stonewall them.

If you're talking personal journals, we just collectively don't really bother with that shit anymore. They might still be actively rping! If you're talking character journals, maybe they moved on to different characters? I'm in totally different fandoms now than I was in three years ago.

Or maybe they're gone.

I think we can all vaguely agree the event could have been handled differently. A lot of fun ideas, with some cringey execution.

Not to mention it's a weird tonal shift to the mods trying to lighten up the game.

+1 it's the same as what happens with fanartists in the us. it's not legal, it's just that someone who isn't making a ton of money really isn't worth wasting their legal teams on unless they want to use someone as an example. a few years ago there was a big scare about fanart at comic cons being commissioned - and that was by "big name" artists (ie, published comic artists). not everyone is adam hughes pulling in $1000 a sketch and i don't doubt adam has his work arounds.

the point is, the reason you see "don't repost" on fanart and doujinshi from japan isn't so much translations and what not as it is the exposure. it's controlled in printed matter or on a small site in japan. i can guarantee they never expected 1/200 copies of a doujinshi would be scanned and uploaded online with their style/a handle of theirs attached to it, especially if it's smut.

same anon and i'd like to add this is also why the scanlations sites of yore were typically password-only forums or through irc channels. it gave them some control of it and made it harder to get a hold of.

set the standard or you'll end up with the "gonsai quality" game or the "e-cats lite" game. don't be afraid to be harsher than you think is necessary. every mod i've known has told me they wished they had been harsher or found a way to create an app where stringing together words and facts and it being legible didn't mean an acceptance. the only problem is none of us have come up with a way to do that i think other than peer votes and that can be even more messy.

just post text translations and give up on scanlating if you want to stop lazy people from reposting them on scanlation sites

a text translation is good enough for anybody who can get ahold of the original and you're not redistributing copies of the original work

i can't stay engaged with a game for long if i don't have a shipping prospect anymore and not just because i really like shipping

after getting treated like a third wheel and constantly flaked on because cr with my character was nobody's priority too many times i want to make sure there's at least one person in a game who i can rely on to be equally invested in our cr

my other confession along similar lines is that i feel uncomfortable playing with people who won't gush with me ooc about our threads

i'm not demanding we become besties or even ever talk about real life shit at all

but i'll assume you aren't honestly enthusiastic about our threads if you don't want to talk with me about them

I think we can all vaguely agree that most people like the event the way it is. But lets keep throwing around words like cringey because we want to start some wank when there is none.

And the rest of that makes no sense. The mods said they wanted to shift the tone away from murder each other constantly not stop all death and killing.

I like that groups are signups some events and picked for us on others. It forces people to play with those they wouldn't.

The failure isn't handwaved. Everyone gets to play it out. They implied from the start that it wouldn't be successful. And did you even read the post? Nobody has to murder anybody.

i think it helps make new cr when players are split up and can't just sign up with their buddies

the only thing i can think of that came close was jumpscares, and that wasn't ever a proper game, just a shiny flakebox that disappeared as abruptly as it popped up. that was another bizarre one, though. for about 2 weeks, half my plurklist couldn't shut up about it, and then after the initial open log it petered out quick and everyone seemed to forget it ever existed.

when most big games close, they may leak players as they move toward a planned endgame and close with more of a whimper than a bang (asgard, luceti), but they still have a core base of players that see it through til the end. exsilium was a unique case in that the closing announcement was so abrupt it seemed to kill everyone's interest in it.

don't let them suspect us.

i think app sections about a player's intent in the game and how a character will mesh might be useful. powergamers sometimes tip their hand in sections like this and then you can decline based on play style fit.

i also miss brief character descriptions, because you could catch creepers based on how lovingly they describe a 14 year old's breasts or having a whole paragraph about a guy's ass.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
you can't play smut with people you know

that is totally you either projecting or not being able to separate ic and ooc. super fucking creepy.

not at all. it's just some people aren't comfortable with that kind of content with people they know. some are. i can talk in public about sex with my friends. other people can't. some people are comfortable and can only play smut with friends. some people prefer not to. that's literally got nothing to do with ic/ooc. it's completely about ooc comfort.

whatever you say

you know there's cybersex chat rooms right

i love it when this argument comes up bc it goes the same way every time

"i cant play smut with people i dont know"
"i cant play smut with people i do know"

both of these get you "ooooh you just want to cyber" and yet anons cant resist fighting about it. tbh just admit that all smut roleplay is a form of cybering and get off your high horse

(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
well, for one, i don't use chat rooms. for two, i don't go into a chat room pretending i'm an immortal being or a goatboy. for three, i don't rp to rub one out. like, all of these things are not like the other. if you want to cybersex, go cybersex. if you want to roleplay, roleplay. either one requires certain levels of comfort, whether it's only being able to cyber with people you know/don't know, or only being able to rp smut with people you know/don't know. the ooc preferences don't change, nimrod.

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
nobody says "you just want to cyber" if you're uncomfortable rping smut with strangers

being unable to rp smut with friends or even just people you know is absolutely weird, either bc you can't separate ooc and ic or you're THAT paranoid that your own friends would judge you

(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't have ooc preferences for this type of thing, i can play with people i know or people i don't. i don't care what you think about people rping in general, but getting upset at people for having a preference that makes them oocly comfortable is pretty much a dick move on your end. what's next? going to ignore their yes/nos because you want what you want?

is this kayvin? sounds like a neckbeardy pushy entitled male response to me.
