I feel the same way. But I think it has more to do with the fact that the game is still rather small with a lot of close-knit casts, so it makes it more noticeable than it would be in a larger game.

All of this plus I'd also add that they care about the thread/pairing/scene/etc. as much as I do. I'm so tired of being invested when my partner clearly isn't. Or vice versa. :(

As someone who's played medieval/renaissance/pre-industrialization characters in multiple games?

It's not really that hard.

It just requires a bit of thought about how someone with zero to little experience/point of reference would react to things. They're experiencing a different culture, and unless they're the sort to never ever want to fit in or try literally anything new (in which case, why play them in a game?) you're going to find that there's a bunch of CR and little plot things that you have an opportunity to spark.

A character like Sansa would be interested in learning about manners and customs for example because fitting in socially is important to her, as is gaining allies/friends to help should her family show up. Getting in to the political action of a game.

A character like Arya would reasonably be all up in learning new fighting styles from other canons and probably enjoy that it's fine to be a tomboy and wear what to that time period are ""boy clothes"".

Someone like Jon would probably bro it up with other dudes, finding a group of friends that don't care that he's a bastard and accept him as an equal/leader. Getting in to the "go and fight the mooks" type action.

There's also definitely something to be said for them being a bit better prepared for things like the post-apocalyptic settings or survival games. They know how to deal with being without things like indoor plumbing, air conditioning, electricity or the like and can teach others to do so as well.

so because you've never seen it, it can't happen? flawed is a new 18+ game that has locked comms. the best way to guarantee a minor doesn't come across inappropriate content is to lock them. there's nothing wrong with it, you're just not 'used' to it. be uncomfortable all you want, but the games don't have to follow the standard norm. a lot of games are doing new things and tbh, i think that's perfectly fine.

so here we have two countering opinions, and that's okay. you can continue to find it odd and i can continue not to care (btw, i'm not in medietas, so i'm not some buttmad mod). some games do things differently. if you don't like the idea of a locked game, don't join. just like people don't like joining locked smut games for the same reason.

or, you know, take a chance and see if you fit. up to you.

or you can just take a breath and realize that fake people doing fake things don't matter regardless of the medium because it's all fake and nothing's happening irl. people playing dean and goku bukaking all over aerith's face isn't any worse than someone having dean and goku impaling and roasting aerith and eating her. horrible and fluffy things happen. sexy and cute things happen. it's not happening to anyone in any actuality.

and tbh, this is where i feel people fuck up with the ic/ooc border. it's okay to find an actor/actress attractive, and hey, people do think sexy thoughts of them while touching themselves, but god forbid you do it in public with other people? no one's playing jensen ackles taking it up the ass (unless you're on ij). we're doing things to people that don't exist. good, bad, sexual, fluffy. there is literally no difference between playing dean and goku other than medium, and if anyone looks at one or the other and says 'that's too real for me, peace out', then that's the person with the ic/ooc divide problem and they probably should keep away from la stuff because wow, learn to separate fiction from reality.

I honestly wish that if we had a game chat platform, it'd be on NEITHER of those. One of the good things about AIM chats back in the day was that if you knew the chat name, anybody can join. I'm not 100% sold on these 'the chatrooms are invite only' sort of platforms.

course, I doubt the Slack chat'll stick around longer than a week or two (aside from the Vorkosignan cluster who iirc has been using it for a while) so we might just both be complaining for the sake of complaining.
