I'm bad at this

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

What do you consider is too sick to go to work?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
actually throwing up, or in pain to the point you actually cannot get out of bed

actually = this is for real, literally happening

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
throwing up, fever, and i'd say just coughing and sneezing a lot if you work in food service.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
stubbed toe

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
depends on the job tbh.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
incapable of functioning.

whether pain, fever, sneezing/coughing, doesn't matter, if you're unable to perform your work duties (sitting, standing, wearing clothes, walking, talking) or could but your productivity would be cut to a fraction - if your employer would notice how little you're getting done, if you talk to/touch people for a living and they would be grossed out/afraid of catching what you have, if you have to ask your coworkers do lift and carry things you normally could, etc.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on the job. Vomit or major sneezing/coughing? Do not go to a food job.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
when you're actually ill? lol at all of you spreading germs to your coworkers just because you're not explosively vomiting, fuck

Depends on the job and how much of a hardass your work is about it? In my job where I worked with a bunch of people I would usually call out if I was worried I was infectious at all - I had a lot of sick time, more than enough people to cover the slack of one person being out, and a lot of potential infectees around.

OTOH my current job has me by myself for 7 of my 8.5 hour shift, so I can easily just use hand sanitizer and wipe down surfaces as I go so I'm not making a health hazard, and it's a pain in the ass to get someone to cover for me if I'm gone, so the only time I've called out was once in two years when I had a migraine and no medicine for it so I physically could not drive the 5 miles there (graveyard shift, so public transit was not an option).

(potential contagion + how shitty do i feel) / (how much do i need the day's wages + how likely is it that a sick day will get me fired)

Sick enough that your symptoms would significantly impair productivity, or contagious with something other than just the mild sniffles. The latter's more important than the former - if you think you can power through, whatever, most people will not be assholes about picking up a little of the slack from someone who's under the weather, but if you're going to be shedding your germs everywhere and making everyone sick, stay the fuck home.

90% of the time if I'm even a little bit sick I'll take a sick day, but I'm lucky to HAVE paid sick days, and if I don't use them, they just sort of accumulate, and I can't use them for planned vacations. The other 10% of the time, if there's something actually time-sensitive or extra busy going on at work, I'll go in for at least a half day to try and get it all done on advil and fumes unless I'm actually somehow incapacitated, yeah.

I'm gonna guess that the people who don't get sick days and/or can't take off sick without risk of being fired or otherwise super negatively effected are Americans. Because this seems like a very American thing to do, punish people for being sick.

Having flu symptoms or stomach virus/food poisoning symptoms. If it's a mild to moderate common cold I'll usually just medicate and go in.

Ironically at my company it was easier to take off work as an entry level employee than it is as a manager. I had an allotment of sick days and I could use them whenever I wanted.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm working on a teaching degree now and got lectured by the professor for coming into class with an obvious cold because i'd be putting immunocompromised kids at risk if i did that on the job

this is america, though, so i doubt i could actually take off work for one

puking, diarrhea, or one of those really sneezy colds that aren't held at bay with medication (because yeah you're going to infect LITERALLY EVERYONE at work, please do not come in)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
throwing up, or a fever/symptoms that are serious enough i shouldn't be driving.

i will also be one of Those People and say that i took some sick days when my mental illness was really bad a couple years back, but tbh i count that under "i shouldn't be driving".

It really depends on the job. I work from home currently so I don't deal with customers face to face and usually am on chat. So to me too sick to work is stuff that affects my ability to multitask and type. If I dealt with people face to face, then I'd probably add in contagious stuff as well.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll echo what a few other people have said, the shitty truth is this really depends on where you work and how their attendance policy is designed. I work in a place with a really horrendous one, so I have to drag myself in unless I pretty much can't get out of bed.

That said, there are some things I'm willing to push through since there are a couple of factors that reduce the risk of getting someone else sick. What it boils down to for me is, will I be a burden to my co-workers? If I can't do my job at least passably well that day, I won't go if that's an option. I'm not in customer service, and it would usually take less for me to call in to those jobs, just because being sick makes things that much worse for both you and the customer.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, I prefer to stay home if I have any reason to believe I might be contagious as the majority of my job consists of handling food. My boss, on the other hand, won't allow me to stay home unless I'm vomiting or dizzy. If I have a cough, he tells me to take a cough drop until it's suppressed.

Days like that, I wash my hands frequently (as in, immediately before serving someone their food, immediately after clearing something away, immediately after coughing, etc etc), but sometimes I get yelled at for taking too much time to do so. It's frustrating in a major way and I really wish my boss would hire on a couple of more employees so we could all cycle around and cover if someone gets sick, because it's honestly no good relying on someone to the point where if they're sick but not sick enough to be allowed to stay home they risk infecting our customers. :(

i got pneumonia once and that was the only real time i was "too sick"

i actually had to have a family member call me in since i wasn't up to talking, it was dumb...

(Anonymous) 2015-10-26 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
lucky enough to work white collar, so if i feel like shit mentally or physically, i don't go into work. that said, it doesn't average out to more than about 3 days a year, cause that's about how often i get sick/feel like shit, and i have so much work to get done that i can't take more than a day of every couple of months for fear of falling too far behind. it'd be different if i had say, stomach flu or something that really knocks you out for multiple days though

handling food: if you're contagious

anything else: if you're too sick to perform your duties, or you're contagious with something worse than a cold

(Anonymous) 2015-10-26 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
I have asthma so basically as soon as I get any form of cold/sinus thing/whatever, within three days it's in my lungs and takes about two weeks to shake off entirely. I'll usually keep going to work until I'm sick enough for a doctor to give me anything other than 'drink liquids and keep taking mucinex', because it's hella hard to get antibiotics now that they're rebounding from over-prescribing the things.

Basically if I'm sneezing/coughing or going to look otherwise obviously ill in front of customers, then I'll stay home

(Anonymous) 2015-10-26 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
