BRAINSTORMING

beautiful things happen when everyone contributes ideas!

i'll make a couple of sub-threads for name ideas, time, etc and other people can chip in sub-threads as they think of them

and from there we can start collecting ideas and making this into an actual thing

Questions on Forming Families

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
There's two different situations for forming families to think about.

(1) When the game first starts up

(2) Later app rounds

It seems like there's a lot of interest in this game, so the start will probably have a lot of players... plenty to generate families of various sizes and types with.

I'm worried about the later app rounds--- especially the ones with relatively few applicants.

Does that leave mods stuck forming only 1-2 families of people app together, or would the app cycle be deliberately long to increase the number of people applying at once?
Could some apped characters be ~extended family~ moving in with relatives already in town? If so, how is that explained to the PC characters of that family?
If people apped in the same cycle are grouped together, does that open problematic doors to cliques of players apping together to be sorted together?

Re: Questions on Forming Families

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
i think it'll be easy to generate families at the immediate start of the game, especially with the number of people interested. with the later app rounds, maybe they could be open for two weeks or so? or would that be a little too long?

i think the best way around it is to have some new characters be sorted into old families, but make it to appear that they were always there in the first place? like maybe once they're in, their faces could appear in the photographs around the house or something like that? AM I MAKING SENSE.

Well, it could work like Mayfield, with people signing up to add to the family. Hum. :|a

Like, say, the family, before each app round, people sign in as to what family members they want. And it would carry over app rounds if that spot doesn't get filled that time around, possibly with being asked if they still want that position filled.

As for extended families, I like this idea. Possibly explain it early on with NPCs going, "Oh, you were so excited when you got their letter saying they were coming."

Could... people app animal characters as family pets? I've been looking for a place to play one, and this sounds like it might be perfect.

So will apping in involve something like typing up their canon history, then some sort of fictional game history?

repeating above anon!

"small town usa. it's relatively close knit but not so itty bitty that it would be boring.

you know, something substantial enough for a variety of homes like a well off to rich neighborhood, apartments, trailers, middle class homes? maybe even a farm or two on the outskirts of town?"

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ideas so far:

Small town USA (http://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/565.html?thread=1084213#cmt1084213), but big enough for a range of locales.

Fairly modern (http://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/565.html?thread=1087797#cmt1087797), to allow use of mobile computers and allow network/social media conversations

Anything here we don't like?

Re: SETTING

I like smalltown, usa with the variety of homes. A place that's got everything from rich living to poor living, apartments to country homes, private and public schools.

I'm curious how the jobs would work. Would adult characters wake up already having a job? Would it be based on skills or careers the characters had in canon or whatever the player wants or the town needs?

PREMISE

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 03:53 am (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
People wake to find themselves in this unfamiliar place, surrounded by clothing that fits them and pictures of themselves and their 'families.' Most of the townspeople seem to recognize them, know them by name, and believe they've lived there for some time.

They and their relatives don't understand, don't remember this place, don't probably recognize each other. But all the things you'd expect to be part of your life are there! The little personal quirks, like how you fold your clothes, the direction you leave toilet paper, favorite foods, all seem to match. It's uncanny.

And especially for characters from dangerous worlds, or who were on the edge of dying, there's something to be appreciated in this relative safety and happiness.

ALTERNATE DESCRIPTION

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Let's find a way of quickly describing the game without, in any way, referencing Mayfield. We've already outlined a few important distinctions, and there's no reason for people reading about this to think they're more similar than they are.

So! Consensus thus far is modern, with the expected tech and variety in family structures.
There's a small segment of us who'd really like a Victorian or 1920's setting... I wouldn't mind if we did all of the above, since it's hardly stepping on toes if we make them as sibling games. But that's probably too ambitious, given only one anon stepped up to mod.

The weirdness is subtle and atmospheric. Reality seems to keep retconning the new people into the world, with most people---the NPCs---expecting them to have been there all along. There's physical evidence of their presence here. Honestly, the only reason to doubt any of it is that the characters don't remember being here.

How can we quickly describe this premise?

So What's Happening Anyway?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
So far, I haven't seen much chat about long-term gameplay.

Some games do the same Events as a lot of others: you know, the age-up, the alignment shift, and so forth. Nothing we've chatted about would make that make sense here---there's no hints that this place is fake, outside the characters' memories.

Others have things happening in the location, and that would make more sense. Holidays typical to the region, maybe some quirky local things.

Do we want any particular longterm theme to be happening, outside the weirdness and the slice-of-life?

What happens to characters who get really comfortable with the lives they find themselves in? What about those who refuse to fit into the life?

Subtle creepy?
