Questions on Forming Families

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
There's two different situations for forming families to think about.

(1) When the game first starts up

(2) Later app rounds

It seems like there's a lot of interest in this game, so the start will probably have a lot of players... plenty to generate families of various sizes and types with.

I'm worried about the later app rounds--- especially the ones with relatively few applicants.

Does that leave mods stuck forming only 1-2 families of people app together, or would the app cycle be deliberately long to increase the number of people applying at once?
Could some apped characters be ~extended family~ moving in with relatives already in town? If so, how is that explained to the PC characters of that family?
If people apped in the same cycle are grouped together, does that open problematic doors to cliques of players apping together to be sorted together?

i think it'll be easy to generate families at the immediate start of the game, especially with the number of people interested. with the later app rounds, maybe they could be open for two weeks or so? or would that be a little too long?

i think the best way around it is to have some new characters be sorted into old families, but make it to appear that they were always there in the first place? like maybe once they're in, their faces could appear in the photographs around the house or something like that? AM I MAKING SENSE.

Yes, you are! It'd be one of those things that most people wouldn't notice, either. It's just subtle enough to be creepy.

Heh, looks like you and anon below had the same idea at about the same time. Retconning them into the setting, with the physical evidence and NPCs confirming the retcon. Considering that's already the plan for the starts of families, it makes perfect sense!

re: app rounds, there's two considerations: how long apps should be open, and how long the cycle length should be.
I haven't modded, so I don't know what's preferable for mods.

Well, it could work like Mayfield, with people signing up to add to the family. Hum. :|a

Like, say, the family, before each app round, people sign in as to what family members they want. And it would carry over app rounds if that spot doesn't get filled that time around, possibly with being asked if they still want that position filled.

As for extended families, I like this idea. Possibly explain it early on with NPCs going, "Oh, you were so excited when you got their letter saying they were coming."

That sounds like you're suggesting applicants have the option to request to join specific families, and if they don't have a preference, leave it to the mods to decide? Then mods either add them to families that have free space, or possibly create new families with the applicants.

NPCs mentioning it, suddenly finding letters or emails around in which "they" planned the move with the "new" relatives... Adding to that sense of doubting their sanity again.

It'll help add to doubting sense if there's a decent NPC population to confirm the delusion. Should we consider a small OC cast to be locals?

Yup, pretty much that! Mayfield has an option of choosing a family you want to app into--so long as the family has okay'd it by majority, meaning you had to prove it.

That would be interesting! I like this idea.

Could... people app animal characters as family pets? I've been looking for a place to play one, and this sounds like it might be perfect.

yes, definitely anon!

I think that would be adorable, actually!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I like that idea! Would this apply specifically to normal-earth animals, or would animal-like creatures also get roped into the role of pets?

For that matter, what should we do with clearly non-humans...?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think animal-like creatures such as Stitch, for example, could be considered as pets!

Although what do you mean by non-humans anon? Characters like Transformer's Optimus Prime or Bumblebee?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly not humans, and yet sentient: Transformers, aliens, GLaDOS, ogres, khajit, and so forth.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure, but perhaps we could do what Route does? Like, when they wake up, they'll be a humanoid version of themselves?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, maybe non-earth animals like pokemon would be pets? I was thinking of playing Dug the dog, so I dunno about how you want to handle other animal types.

Maybe non-humans are turned fully human? Or significantly human?

So will apping in involve something like typing up their canon history, then some sort of fictional game history?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
It'd make sense to me if apps emphasize personality, and have canon history as a way of backing up personality and pointing out any references the characters might make.

We've chatted a bit about how the family placement gets decided, but I don't think there's been any consensus on it yet.
If mods are doing all placement decisions, there's no reason for players to write an in-game history, at least until after placement.
If players do choose a lot, or at least have the option to choose... maybe.
