even if that's true, who says "i'm not gonna watch any tv because the cable company doesn't let me buy channels ala carte"?

Uh, a lot of people are dropping their cable companies for that exact reason and now they're watching shows online with Netflix or whatever. I got rid of cable a year ago and I don't miss it at all. I was spending to much money, and more importantly I was spending too much time surfing through three hundred channels of utter crap whenever I got bored.

I don't have a cable subscription either for a similar reason, but I didn't throw a tantrum and flounce out of cable in a huff because the service didn't perfectly cater to me. And that's basically what some RPers are doing with regards to icons.

I think the point is more about the huffy flounce than the deciding not to have cable. I mean, unless you constantly whine to anyone who will listen about how unfair the cable company is being to you because of the packages they offer.

I did about ten years ago. I don't watch television at all now and I never miss it. I was sick of being fleeced for 300 channels worth of garbage when I watched 5-6 regularly at the most. It was preferable to do without those 5-6 and not spend the money than to keep up with their stupid price hikes and the monopoly the companies have on content.

So this is more common than you think.
