Some netiquette help would be really appreciated here: this person keeps tagging me every time I comment to an open meme with a particular character. This usually wouldn't be a problem, but either their character or their writing or the general fit of our character interaction is just very... dull, and carrying out a thread with them is so far the most efficient cure for my long term insomnia. I've tried to thread with them on multiple occasions when they've tagged in, thinking different scenarios might help, but it really hasn't worked out.

They've just tagged me again, and I don't know whether to just not tag back or PM them with my issues. Usually I'd go with PMing, because it's often the civil option, but I'm not sure how to politely tell someone they're too dull for me to tag back, especially since they seem to be really into having a version of my character to thread with. I can't even think of anything helpful to tell them, any suggestions to liven up their playing, at least with regards to our thread. What it comes down to is that their character is unengaging, their responses are uninteresting, and the writing is bland. Since I don't know their character's canon, I don't even know what to suggest for that.

What would you do?

bonus: yyyes. i've done both in memes. the second one was touch and go on tumblr actually. they have amazing belligerent sexual tension, so they were always on the cusp up "please get together/no don't". the former had touches in a game but it never went into anything huge since i ended up dropping. too bad too. they make a nice pair.

I once apped a character that had been previously played at the game before, which I suppose should have been my first warning. That version had been gone for quite some time though so I thought it would be no big deal.

I join, start tagging around, having fun, rping. My character is almost immediately confronted by another from some other canon claiming they had sexual history with mine, which I guess they did with the other version? No ooc communication from the other player, no warning, nothing.

It put me off so badly I ended up dropping within a week.

Character Development vs. OOC

Where do you draw the line, anons? Obviously, no character is going to be 100% IC when put in a situation that they're not used to and being forced to deal with things beyond the norm, but we can all agree they should be recognizable.

My rule of thumb is that you should be able to trace the development and explain it if asked. Any character can go through a dramatic change, even in canon (look at Sawyer on LOST), but unless it was shitty writing, you can go "well, this event happened and made this happen, etc."

I'm getting kind of annoyed when people throw characters into games for two months or less and then claim CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT when they start writing them radically different to suit their purposes and there's no real reason behind it other than "they wanted to."

Basically the line gets drawn when like you said, you can trace the development to events. That and it's also slow and not an overnight change most often. People don't tend to just wake up one day and want to change themselves completely. Even if they do, they tend to mess up at times and may even change their mind. Development is much like learning a new skill, it takes time and practice to get to where you want to be and not all are capable of getting there.

The character should still definitely be recognizable. No matter what happens, some characters just won't do certain things. For instance, it would definitely be very unlikely that Sephiroth would go around dancing in a pink tutu and cuddling bunnies of his own free will. It could potentially happen in the right circumstances, but there is likely going to be a lot of development behind such a drastic change.

Do you think a good friend is one who backs you up for whatever you do and reassures you whenever you're feeling down or unhappy or angry about something, or someone who can be trusted to have an evenhanded response to your problems/feelings/whatever in a fair and impartial way and who will be quick to tell you when and where you fucked up too.

Not to say that there can't be a healthy medium reached between the two, but which kind do you think constitutes a better friend?

A healthier relationship would probably be the second, just because it's always good to have someone around who can see past all the bullshit and ugliness being a shitty mood brings out.

But honestly I'd really rather just have the first even if I know a lot of it would be empty buttpatting and bland comforting. I have my parents to let me know when I'm being a shithead, my friends are supposed to ~always be there for me~ or whatever.

Luceti is the biggest one still around I think. Unless Route still uses the journal-based system, I'm not sure how many else there are.

I prefer the journal based games personally. Mods usually keep the list of add-remove consistently updated so you don't have to pay much attention yourself. There's only one list of things to follow (the Flist, as opposed to a log and network comm) and most people who post network things include an action option in the same post. I know some games discourage this, so it's all network or all log, which is probably why so many people have grown to hate networks in games.
