Out of the hollowed log and up the only road in sight brings you to a town with no signs of life. Everyone seems to have vanished, in the midst of going about their day: doors ajar from an unfinished exit; food lay cooling in the diner booths; a car run off the road from the sudden vacancy of its driver.

A fog rolls in, and you notice that no lights are on. It’s cold, and damp.

Welcome to Kingsmouth; the seat of Solomon County, Maine. You are the quarry of its burden.

Solomon’s Burden is a panfandom jamjar game set on an AU version of Solomon Island, a location from The Secret World. Characters find that all previous human inhabitants have vanished, and are slowly being replaced by arrivals from other canons. Characters must band together or conflict with each other to compete for supplies and survive on an island with a deep history and even deeper mysteries.

Solomon’s Burden accepts characters from all mediums; CRAU versions of characters; AU characters on a case by case basis; as well as OCs both from canons and original settings. Characters do not get humanized and retain all supernatural or otherwise extraordinary characteristics.

Why it's in our premise: Plot things, mostly.

Why we're using REON in particular: the aesthetic. We were initially going to write the code in Flea++ but one of my friends translates EXA_PICO languages as a hobby and jumped at the chance to write some stuff in REON for us. This setting doesn't have a whole lot to do with Surge Concerto but does have a lot of shared influence in the like... mixture of digital and organic aesthetics sort of thing.

as a huge secret world fan, i have to say that this is just a mess in every way.

you've got a taken list with characters on it, but you're not accepting applications yet which makes it look like it's already clique-y. and then in your rules, you're putting things like being anti-kin on the same level as homophobia and transphobia and that's just flat out inappropriate.

this is all on top of having nearly none of your pages up. the ad really would have benefited from you waiting to post it until you had more up.

Generally by the time someone has started openly advertising a game on RP anons, they have all the information laid out. It's hard to know if you'd want to app to a game if you don't actually know what you're getting into, and a premise does not a full game make.

let them do whatever they want. if it's a premise that interests you, then fine, join. if it's not, just ignore it? i looked through what game info there is after reading the blowup and you guys are making the kin thing a bigger deal than it actually is. it's just a passing mention.

Honestly, Solomon mods, you're probably better off keeping your game as a musebox/closed game rather than an open game, because it'll turn a lot of players away. It doesn't sound like you're going to mesh well with our usual community.

I would say that perhaps several of your group should have looked into playing in already running games and seen how we handle things before making your own game.

Also I am otherkin and please stop. The otherkin community pre-tumblr hates that sort of victimization. Hate against otherkin is not on the same level as transphobia, racism, or homophobia. No otherkin has ever died or been assaulted because they were otherkin. Please stop. Tumblrkin are ridiculous and fictionkin are even worse. Please keep your discussion of mental/spiritual kin issues out of rp, it doesn't belong there.

Fictionkin are unwelcome in dwrp because as rpers we NEED a ooc vs ic line and fictionkin destroy that line. An rper needs to be able to put the character down and interact with people outside of that character. If someone can't do that, they need help and do not need to be participating in dwrp which will probably only cause them issues because of 1) no ic/ooc line, 2) not everyone will agree with their interpretation of that character and dwrp is based around being able to "prove" your interpretation of a character through canon, rather than saying "well I feel [insert headcanon] in my heart!" without any proof from canon to back it up. Our apps are written like argument essays usually, so I would suggest looking up examples and trying to meet that standard before continuing down this path.

Our community is based around intense discussion about canons and breaking down characters to base levels. If you can't do that (that sample app is VERY short by our standards and not really good either tbh) then perhaps you should stick to meme comms and museboxes for now--not an open game, which at this point, people might join just to troll you.

Since everything else about the politics of the rules has been spoken about, I won't speak of those in this comment. I'll talk about how as rp-mod rookies in Dreamwidth, you can do with a few tips instead!

This goes for anyone interested in making a game in any platform, not just dreamwidth.

1. Getting most of your pages up: Even if you want to throw up a premise to garner interest, those interested would also like to read up further information so that they can ask questions. It solidifies interest much more effectively.

2. Wanting to start out with new characters already in game: By standard, in any game, whether Dreamwidth or even Forums, people reserve and apply for characters from scratch. So if you want to have your characters already in a game, it's best to start off with a Beta Period. This lets you play around with the idea and premise, and fine tune your game mechanisms. Otherwise, start off with an invite-only or musebox style game, and after you feel you are ready, open it up for application. This practice has been done a few times before so feel free to start out like that too.

It's a community-based website, so you can keep all your fun in your own communities, and those interested will find you and join. i don't agree with your opinions either, but i'm not here to stop your fun especially when you're just starting out. dreamwidth is an excellent platform for everyone, whether people's opinions clash or whatever, even violently. that's how these kind of anoncomms can even exist. and it has a nice and easy system to roleplay on. good luck with all your future endeavors.

i can't get on board with the "anti-kin" thing on any level for a range of reasons, but enough has already been discussed about it in this thread that i'm not going to further add to it. that aside, however, i will say that i'm sorry you've been dogpiled. dwrp isn't a very welcoming community; dwrp culture is very closed-minded when it comes to people doing things that don't conform to the current "norm", and the pervasive anon culture hasn't helped matters in that regard. i hope you aren't discouraged by what's happened here. all i can say is: address and implement whatever issues/comments that have been raised here that you feel will benefit your game and your playerbase, and those who want to be involved will join in with you.

i wanna add to the discussion about about the rules and why the community jumped on you. there is a huge difference in culture concerning the time and the era we live in. dwrp came from ljrp which precedes tumblr, and everything that has happened pre-tumblr involving these topics have not been good, so a lot of the community here haven't had a good experience when they tried to accept themselves as who they are, which is why they don't want it to be taken lightly. i know you guys have good intentions in trying to make everything friendly, but just understand that this reaction comes from a period of time where this was not easy for any of us anywhere. it's better now because of awareness, but you know even on tumblr, it's still a touchy subject. it was just really awful back then. please take this into consideration too when making the comparisons. otherwise, best of luck!

Mods, here's the core concern in terms of the actual topic of RP:

Otherkin, in their belief that they 'channel' a character, might RP that character. It's a problem because the character they kin might be colored by their personality and not entirely in character. Here, we focus on staying IC most of all, and it can be detrimental to castmates if you color the character too deeply with your own personal preferences that have no canon evidence backing them.

In example: if say a gay kin chooses to brutally ignore all opposite sex or opposite sex presenting canonmates in spite of canon evidence to otherwise. being gay isn't bad, and we're cool with ships of all types (many players go with a 'if chemistry is there, we're shipping it' route), but it is bad to refuse to play with canonmates based entirely on whether you ship them or not.

A player will also get criticized if their character presents as trans right out of the box without anything solid in canon backing that idea up, either. Ultimately, you have to prove that you being Kin will not affect your characterization and you won't be causing difficulties for other players based on those kin aspects.

The main rule of DWRP is don't be a dick, it's just it's very easy to be a dick when you have strong (possibly ones you would prefer not to be flexible on) perceptions of a character that might not jive with other, non-kin players.
