Make that anon suffer

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

strategists

(Anonymous) 2015-11-02 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Wondering about characters who are noted to be genius strategists in their canon. If an event or plot requires them to devise a plan and use their skills, how do I not fuck up?

Re: strategists

"be a good strategist."

like, there's no way around it. much like being a canon flirt, you can't just handwave brilliance.

that being said some canons laud their strategists as geniuses when they're really... really... not. (i'm lookin at u, aot.) so you can also look at the way they actually plan in canon and be ic in the way they dispense their resources. do they look for weaknesses in the opponent first and base their plans on those? do they play to the strengths of the people who actually look to them? are they prone to pushing the advantage while they have it or do they delay until they have the maximum amount of information? are they good at rolling with the punches? strategize icly and don't take it personally if or when they fail.

- lots of ooc plotting!

- do a little background reading on strategy, and maybe also specifically on military tactics that'd fit your character's time period and canon (if you're playing someone from the Tale of Three Kingdoms, their approach to strategy isn't going to be the same as a spaceship captain's.) This will help you with your confidence levels and with your ooc brainstorming of plans.

- If you're really uncomfortable explicitly writing out plans, do the plan-making in an OOC plotting post and then make your IC post a handwave. "[genius strategist explans the plan, click for details!]" is completely serviceable and you won't have to sweat about not having a level of expertise that matches your character's.

I have a question that may seem sort of odd.

Advice on how to write a character who has a lot of long hair? I've only ever had short hair in my life and I'd like a better handle on how to write someone with really long hair. Like, what to do when they're fighting, how much it weighs them down, whether or not it'd get tangled, that sort of thing.

Grumpy characters

(Anonymous) 2015-11-03 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Specifically, characters who are grumpy and socially inept because they lack experience with people (i.e., they've been forced to be reclusive for reasons) and are lonely, rather than generally grumpy/angry people.

What things should I show/focus on when they are interacting with people?

"mean" characters

(Anonymous) 2015-11-04 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
how do emphasize that your asshole of a character does not reflect you or your thoughts on an ooc level? i feel like it's pretty "duh" but a lot of people still take mean characters personally it seems like

also how do you keep up with their mean streak in the sense of keeping that edge to their personality? if it helps, the character i am thinking of is a ambitious and self-centered type...

Characters with communist backgrounds

(Anonymous) 2015-11-04 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, please don't shoot me for this but I'm thinking about picking up a character who's from (mondern-day) Russia and who has been noted to occasionally "talk like a true communist" by the people he works with in the series he's from. It's usually harmless and meant in a joking way whenever it happens, but it still leaves me wondering if growing up in a society that has/had strong communist influences leaves you seeing things differently than say, when you grow up in a society that's all about capitalism.

I'm especially looking for insider POVs and any tips for daily life things since my google-fu keeps getting me essays about politics.

I'll be taking him from the end of the novel, if that helps any. ^^;

Character who speaks another language

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
For anyone who plays a character that only speaks another language but can manage some phrases in English, how do you properly differentiate well between them to make it clear when they're speaking in their native tongue versus in English? Concerned with either somehow coming across rude about it OOCly in the manner by accident or mangling it so that it doesn't make sense for the people reading it.

Thank you!
