gacha, sadly. genshin impact and honkai star rail are the two biggest ones, with zenless zone zero trailing behind them. these are known collectively as hoyoverse games.

project sekai, arknights, nu carnival, love and deepspace, path to nowhere, reverse 1999, ensemble stars, twisted wonderland, tokyo debunker, fate/grand order and bang dream all have active fandoms too.

tbf if someone's interested in the premise of a game but doesn't wanna get into the actual gacha game part of it, the most popular ones will have youtube channels that upload the story content for perusal instead

I can at least vouch that for Twisted Wonderland, all the story parts are both archived on Youtube in both fan translations and the official EN translations, the EN story is fully available via transcripts on the wiki, there is an in-progress manga that is true to the game story, and there is an anime coming soon. you don't have to, and probably shouldn't if you have gambling problems, do any gacha-ing to consume it.

if you have to get into a gacha get into arknights

you can actually win fights without spending money for the highest tier operators

and the story is pretty cool

hoyo anything has a massive case of same face syndrome. it's a nightmare to icon

you don't actually have to spend money to "win" at genshin either. you can just play as your favorites and get through the story quests and open world fine.


but you shouldn't be playing any gacha if you have a gambling addiction so disregard this advice if that is the case for you lol

another +1 agree. honestly i've found that most of the big hoyo games don't bank on pay-to-win to actually progress the story content at all, which is what most of fandom actually cares about. the main campaigns are easy af with the most basic building blocks. even in hsr, which has the most vocal complaints about new character powercreep, not pulling for meta is basically only costing you maybe two or three whole rolls of currency from the endgame challenges every couple months, and the main quests have an easy mode toggle

it's the gacha mechanics in themselves that are the main issue rly. (and as someone forged in the flames of fgo's gacha pre-pity system: there are def actually somehow worse gachas out there)

you can beat most/all endgame content in genshin without spending anything even. i follow a lot of no pull accounts (so they only use the free characters) who do it for the challenge and many of them can fully star the abyss with enough time.

you just really have to care about character builds.

i miss the late 90s to early 2000s rpg era. i know why people are not playing games like breath of fire, suikoden, star ocean and the older final fantasies anymore, but i wish they would

I still play the 'old' games. Used to play the gacha ones but I lost interest and fell behind and now I don't really care to catch up that much.

for years i wished video game canons were more common in dwrp

then the monkey paw fucking curled and now gacha isn't just the most popular video game genre(?) / medium(?) here, it's one of the most popular in general.

tbh it's probably because dwrp is a microcosm of fandom, and fandom overall has always loved sources of ongoing content. stuff that updates consistently and gets people together to yell about the new material every time developments drop. most video games are one and done deals, especially the more obscure ones like small indie rpgs; they may still develop a fandom, and that fandom might stay committed for a long time, but it's going to be smaller and dwrp is going to reflect that. now tho, gacha comes along with monthly updates and constant new content and broad appeal, and the fandoms for these games is kept alive and well *and* growing as a result. it's the same reason other ongoing canons are so popular around here too: big anime/manga, mcu, tv shows like star strek...all ongoing, all still putting out updates

and like sure there's games out there that have series installments, but it's still sometimes years between the next one. bigger ones like dragon age and mass effect kind of shat the bed with their newest titles too, haven't they? baldur's gate and idk final fantasy haven't beansed it, and we do still see many characters from those games around here. otherwise it's kinda rough in the more conventional vidya world out there rn tho...

i have no problems with ongoing canons. i started my dwrp career back when square enix was releasing a new final fantasy every other year it seems

my problem is that newer rpgs, gacha in particular, just don't scratch the same itch. i find the stories not good due to the live service model. without the constrain of a one and done game the story just keeps going and going and going often to its detriment

also the fact i'm diametrically opposed to gacha because i have an addictive personality and am under doctor's orders not to play gacha (former gambling addict)

oh no yeah im not saying gachas are inherently superior to the littler indie games at all from a quality front, just speculating on the likely reasons we've been seeing so much of gacha in dwrp instead lately. which realistically *probably* isn't just that all the kids these days are gambling addicts now. broad appeal and consistent content seem to be the bigger factors, esp since we've had plenty of people here mention that a mediocre story won't stop them from rp (even if yeah for other people it def just doesn't have the sauce)

in fact personally i do think it's unfortunate that the largest fandoms lately seem to be gacha, precisely because yeah if you try to play them, the predatory pay structure is real and plenty of people don't want to and/or shouldn't be getting into all that

but it is what it is lately ig

okay, i think i figured it out

the reason why i'm bleh on gacha is because the characters come across more as tropes than fully realized characters. here's your spunky tsundere, he's the white-haired bishounen, etcetera. whereas traditional rpgs tend to dig more into characters. i'm sure there's gacha out there that are the exception but this is my experience with all of the gachas i've rped with so far

'this character is x, y and z!' okay but why should i care? are they x, y and z as a consequence of their life choices, the worldbuilding, what? gacha feels so boilerplate to me. which makes sense, they want to appeal to the most people for $$$

tbh i don't find the stories any worse than console games because let's face it, there are a lot of console rpgs whose stories are meh too, we just tend to forget about those because they were meh.

da, but I also think you're overlooking the simple fact that it's a lot easier to squeeze out the time for a honkai star rail patch on your lunch break on your phone, than it is to carry around your computer and chew through a dragon age
