Cute and hydrated

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

okay, i think i figured it out

the reason why i'm bleh on gacha is because the characters come across more as tropes than fully realized characters. here's your spunky tsundere, he's the white-haired bishounen, etcetera. whereas traditional rpgs tend to dig more into characters. i'm sure there's gacha out there that are the exception but this is my experience with all of the gachas i've rped with so far

'this character is x, y and z!' okay but why should i care? are they x, y and z as a consequence of their life choices, the worldbuilding, what? gacha feels so boilerplate to me. which makes sense, they want to appeal to the most people for $$$

Re: SA

i feel like this is just about as dependent on the individual character and franchise in question as it would be for jrpg, at least for the characters you'll see on dwrp

people here usually aren't playing empty tropes, even if that was your perception of what they're doing

yeah it's quite possible i just had a string of shit gacha rpers, who knows. it was bakerstreet which doesn't exactly screen for quality, so i'm willing to concede the point

at a cursory glance i did like arknights. the designs are cool and what lore i read about the worldbuilding seemed solid. have never rped with one though

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
do you often get really deep into character lore on your average bakerstreet thread, let's be for real

You're not guaranteed to get better things in games but the would you fuck my blorbo memes are almost never going to get you a deep dive on the character

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
no but i was more likely to find rpers with character sheets, permissions, and naming what the character's name and canon is (i can't believe people don't put this somewhere, common problem) from canons that were not gacha vs. gacha

almost like gacha players expect everyone to know who their characters are because it's so popular

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
are you maybe basing this perception on that one player who dumps a rotating selection of the 5 blandest girls from today's top-hitting gacha canons on every single meme

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
i know who you're talking about but no it wasn't just them

so many gacha players have blank journals

sometimes they don't even list their names

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
okay fine

i just had to bring up the example where you're totally right

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
like no skin off my nose if they do that specially since gacha players often don't tag out at all

but i'm more willing to give people a chance if there's something up on that journal, you know? at least permissions

eeh speak for yourself, i've ended up playing with more gacha folks that actually do go ham on that info in the journal than characters from most other hot stuff canons like mcu etc

that probably just boils down to the circles you end up finding in memes or psls tho

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah anon i am speaking for myself

thought i made that clear

Re: SA

People love tropes though, that's why it's popular for rp and fandom to make those characters seem deeper than they are. It does suck for development though, since very few of these characters can develop and it's all about moving onto the next new shiny.

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2025-05-17 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
ironically shallow take

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2025-05-18 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
tbf isn't the bulk of dwrp all about getting to write out development that canon never gets into itself

a lot of ppl seem to find perfectly fleshed canons with completely closed character arcs difficult to pick up bc there's not a ton to really iterate on in rp

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2025-05-18 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
it seems like it was once but people are now so against even the most minor headcanon that players are afraid to develop things that aren't explicitly stated

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2025-05-18 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
from fear of being accused of soulbonding/being overinvested/trying to befriend the main cast with an OC/trying too hard to make a shallow character deep/etc and so on

yes i do play minor characters 🫠

Re: SA

shakes hands with you in also in minor character hell

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2025-05-18 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
is this specific to some kinds of canons, like video games? I’ve just never encountered this attitude before.

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2025-05-18 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
that's because it doesn't actually exist. the only times i've seen people get upset over headcanon were cases like someone adding abuse or sa headcanon when there was absolutely nothing in canon to hint at anything like that existing.

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2025-05-18 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't experience it therefore it doesn't exist anon is here

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2025-05-18 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
nope

there are plenty of people in this hobby who get butthurt if you don't play a character as a cardboard cutout from canon

but the whole point of this hobby is to rp characters going through situations they wouldn't experience in their canon. by virtue of taking them out of their canon and plopping them in your average jamjar, you've already changed the character from its canon self

i'm not interested in rpers regurgitating the canon, otherwise i'd just go play the game/read the book/watch the show. i'm interested in rpers showing me realistic progression for a character. is it believable for them to go from point a to point b? skilled rpers have gotten me interested in characters i'd never care about in their canon because they fleshed them out in ways that are still recognizable as their core in canon, but with the experiences of the rp on hand

even abuse and sa headcanons can be done well. the problem is that the majority of people here lack the skill and grace to do so. so better off not doing it. true of most controversial headcanons tbqh

+100. flatviewer, and i haven't read this entire thread in full but this comment speaks to me.

i've played characters who had it rough in their canon, and i've tossed them in a jamjar games. and after a year or two of them being in that jamjar, they became healthier, happier, gained some friends, had love interest(s), worked through their trauma, the whole nine yards. and i can't tell you how many times i had to deal with people being butthurt because my characters progressed after being stuck in a better environment than their canon world.

god forbid characters grow and change in a game especially over multiple years. which is to say this is my exact experience as well

I will say this as someone who does get annoyed when I see castmates being ooc in a way that feels like the character sounds more like the player than the character: It can always be an interpretation thing and genuinely doesn't matter how ooc you think someone is or isn't.

If they developed the character that way in the game and enjoy it, good for them. To be honest I have been proven wrong by canon too before when I was super anal about details, and sometimes I'm the one who is thinking very oocly because I refuse to move on from things written on paper.

RP is a chance for players to explore what they want and play what they want, and there are plenty of people who add headcanons that actually work very well with the character and make their developments even more believable. If I wanted to stick to canon, I'd just drop fan content (rp, fic, art, etc) entirely because there will always be an interpretation that won't match yours involved.
