my bet is it was someone doing a two-line info summary in their TL to draw in crosscanon threadmates. if that's the case, it's a little less malicious, because we encourage people to put up info, and their target audience are exactly players who have no starting interest in the canon and therefore couldn't get spoiled.

Thinking about creating a dark fantasy horror game and just creating the bare bones of it right now. When I say dark fantasy I mean things like the original Brothers Grimm versions of fairy tales, and for a more modern comparison, Guillermo del Toro films. Having been around since the LJRP days, I'd like to know what you think works in both fantasy & horror games and what doesn't. What are elements you really wish would be put into a game like that you haven't seen in years? What is something you never want to see ever again?

Having noticed no matter how dark a horror game is, there will always be the "playing with puppies and baking cookies during the Apocalypse" crowd, I was thinking of doing events with 3 "levels". So level 1 leans a bit more into mild fantasy concepts and has fluffier outcomes, level 2 is a bit more action-oriented and with bigger stakes, and level 3 is hardcore fantasy horror for people that love to psychologically and physically torture their characters. I figure this way people can also give a reprieve to their character if they've been there for a year and need a breather from all the horror elements. Any thoughts on if that's a good idea or not?

me but when a character is funny

it's not because you're dumb it's because most characters who are geniuses (or funny) do it in a contained setting. a lot harder to be smart (or funny) in a space where you don't control everything the way an author would

i actually really like the idea of tiers because it would allow you to take breaks whichever event you need something lighter without having to figure out why your character isn't being hit with the harder stuff. some mechanic where some people have better outcomes for months you need them is an interesting concept. I'm sure some people wouldn't like it but it would be a draw for me!

In fantasy games I like the ability to gain setting specific abilities or items especially for normal characters with nothing of use. I'm not a fan of NPCs being all over the place though I think some NPCs are needed.

Has anyone else struggled to get back into not just RP, but connecting to fictional media entirely after unrelated RL trauma or intense periods of stress?

It's like I can't turn off the awareness that I'm sitting and watching or reading something made-up, and so I can't get myself to care enough about any story or character to want to RP from anything, and most attempts at writing characters I played before just fall flat. It's like I broke my escapism bone and it sucks.

but i also get it, you know? game tags are more permanent, and if you fall behind on those, it piles up, while most meme partners i have will backtag to a reasonable extent

yes. after losing an immediate family member years ago i couldn't rp for like two years after the fact and couldn't really get into much fiction or anything really for the better part of a year after. it happens. it took me time to get back to a place where i was ready to have fun again.

just give yourself time and don't push it.

yeah, i felt something close to this for the 9-ish years i was out of rp until recently. rp just didn't matter to me anymore and wasn't something i was about to waste my time on when there were way more important things happening, basically? ultimately in my case i don't think this was even a bad thing because of the specific reasons i felt like this, but if you want to come back to rp and get back the feelings you had for it before, i wonder if trying to get into other hobbies first would help? maybe others that aren't so full-on fictional, or something that feels more grounded in the real world? i'm just guessing, but it seems like that could help your brain open up to things that are just for fun again.

It was, yeah. It's disappointing but I'm not mad at the spoiler-er; and I think I'll be happier if I stay off Bakerstreet in future when I'm elbow deep into a twisty game. (I had the exact same thing happen with FFXVI and that was regarding the one mystery I was actually invested in.) The format of video games as a medium (long, interactive) kind of makes it inevitable when I can't hit the same pace as other players.

so after a ton of rl stuff happened (multiple deaths in the family, illness, etc.) the only thing i did for basically four months was play stardew valley. i dropped every game i was in, stopped watching anything i was watching and literally did nothing but rl stuff and play stardew valley. i wasn't even into the storyline either but it was just something to do with my hands and take my mind off of everything. now that i'm going through more rl stress the only thing i want to do is play mindless grinding games.

this is just my experience but it did come back eventually for me. it just took time for me to decompress and not think about anything more difficult than what i immediately needed to do to stay alive.

I really like that tier idea! You're completely right in that there's always different crowds who want different things in DWRP, and honestly, that'd be useful even for the people who want the full-on dark fantasy. Maybe they've tortured their character for the last few months and now want to go easy on their character for a bit, so they can stay within the tier 1 and 2 choices. Maybe they like to mix it up and have some light and some dark prompts at the same time. Maybe they want to start off light, and slowly build up to the torture. That really caters nicely to everyone.

If you do wind up making this game, make sure you mention the tier idea in the ad plurk to hook people!

looking for historical characters or other time travelers for this guy, who slips through time. modern-day characters are also welcomed. i'm keeping the cause of the time slip vague, so it could be science fiction or supernatural, so i'm also interested in supernatural creatures.

i'm up for shipping (m/f), but, fair warning, it would be doomed. i do have an idea of jack and an immortal meeting at various points through history and falling in love.

A couple of wins for today!

1) I finally got the chance to ask for a PSL with one of the people I've been threading with. They were super enthusiastic and fun to talk to. I was really happy!

2) A funny coincidence happened to me that involved a canon character (let's just call them K) I'm having a spicy thread with. At the time, I assumed the thread got dropped after a week so I just shrugged and continued with my other tags. I was on Youtube listening to some goofy romance audio RP that featured K being shipped with the listener (i.e: some Y/N type bullshit).

Halfway through the video, I hear a sudden ping. I installed a browser add-on for Gmail so I make sure not to miss any notifications, and it would ping every time I get one. Lo and behold, it was a K tag. The spicy thread is still on!

what are the signs you should drop a game? I’m having a really hard time justifying staying at a game but the very little cr that actually tags back has me wanting to stay.

i'm in the same boat right now anon and honestly? when tagging over 3/4ths of the game feels like a chore

like yeah i love the small group of people who tag consistently, but the fact 3/4ths of the game doesn't + finding every single event boring so far = i should probably drop

after some rl trauma my tastes shifted, and what I needed to satisfy me in fiction came from a different place. I gravitated toward canons and characters that addressed certain themes I felt needed to be acknowledged by the setting or the character in order for me to engage with them.

i also had to accept that some things are just going to be a miss for me forever. i can't do children's media or things aimed at a younger audience anymore, even the ones that people say tackle darker or heavier themes. there is a disconnect that i can't bridge anymore and i lose interest immediately.

me too anon. talked to my therapist about it, pretty common thing after significant trauma. so if you are, don't feel shame over it

echoing the anon above me, but this is absolutely fine! icons are icons. it's the same character, you're not using fanart without permission, and it's not any different than taking a character from a specific canon point while also using icons that come from canon points later than that. unless there's some very specific visual aspect of your character that changes after your canon point that can introduce major confusion to your tag partners when they make assumptions about your character's appearance, i don't see any issue with it whatsoever.

one day I'll learn my lesson and stop tagging this person.
