Rundown: rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. what convinced you that the cult wasn't for you? what was the process of getting out? did the cult try to stop you from leaving? and for a more lighthearted question: did fandom have anything to do with your decision to leave?

So from what I've learned I'm a fairly rare case in that my decision to leave had to do with doing a wiki dive on LGBTQ issues, and I got out because I read about the actual science on, in particular, intersex and transgender identities. It so happened that while I was in the process of leaving I also went back to school and took sociology, which taught me a lot about how gender identity is culturally-influenced, not influenced by one's chromosomes. When I left there was an ongoing exodus of people leaving that had lasted around 4 years, but most of them left over believing the unorthodox teachings of the cult didn't line up with the Bible. So I experienced shunning from cult members (I lived in a town that had 3 churches that were members of this cult, so I would see people I knew all the time, but they'd ignore me), as well as shunning from the people who left and went to mainline evangelicalism.

The process of getting out was basically just that I started cutting my hair and wearing pants. And not attending church anymore, of course. This cult believes in cultural/group pressure and prayer for the 'lost sheep' rather than physical intimidation or anything like that. So I'm grateful no one confronted me about coming back after I started showing that I was leaving. (Well, besides my husband, but that's a whole other tale.)

Fandom was a big part of my story, actually! The canon I got into that I was RPing from (mentioned in other comments) has a female character who's very strong-willed and pursues justice via unconventional means, and she became my hero. I thought about what she would do a lot when I was working my way out of the cult.
