im assuming you're talking about dan heng pairings here but iirc all the viable other halves are waaay older than 40 too....?? unless im dumb and forgor somebody else (very possible)

I mean, maybe Welt if you're not read up on his background from hi3 and just assume based on visuals (in reality he's 80-ish due to body reconstruction shenanigans iirc?)

But then Dan Heng is canonically at least 30 soooo

isn't he like 100 but it's elf rules where that means he's a teenager or young adult?

He's referred to as a "youth" alongside March 7th (unknown) and the Main Character (who could be 5 or 500, they're an Artificial Person so who knows) so yeah, basically, he's young for his race

It's a RWBY ship but tell me more about Honkai actually.

Immortal dragon man and his much younger, mortal bff commit the heinous crime of trying to resurrect their dead friend and it goes horribly wrong, killing a bunch of people and cursing the mortal bff to go insane + can't be killed

Immortal dragon man is then executed, forcing him to reincarnate. The reincarnation is kept as a political prisoner in superjail for an undisclosed amount of time from birth, before his other younger bff, who is now an old(er) man and General of the Entire Thing, exiles him out of pity and a sense of sadness that he couldn't save his old friends

(now young) dragon man goes on the run because bestie #1 is a violent, depraved murderer hunting him for sport and revenge. also they have, like, matching bracers and jewelry from when they were friends who shared "drinks and companionship under the moonlight" or some shit

Bestie #2 pines sadly for what once was while knowing his old friend is well and truly gone, and says shit like "That I may glance upon him from the shore is enough for me" (yes, really) when asked about it

That DOES sound really interesting.

I'm not sure when I'll have time for a gacha game again but when I do I'll be sure to check out these deranged immortal dragon men.

da who was pitched these pairs this same way and found it all lacking in execution: it sounds spicy but it's ymmv

the reincarnation suffers from ptsd about the incarnation and wants nothing to do with him, he wants to be his own person and hsr hasn't let him and one of the guys interact since 1.2 (it also establishes early on that this guy traumatized him so much he's legit afraid of him, which fandom likes to gloss over), the other one he does get along with but that period of his life was important to him but a footnote in an otherwise very long life. he watches all of his friends with the same kind of fond heartbreak because two of them are trapped in a bad situation and the teen is being dragged into it when he essentially got out

if you like problematic ships and don't mind canon seems to be dragging its feet to the resolution you might like the ship anyway but it warrants a caveat imo

another da to +1 this anon and also add that you will find so little of this in the actual gameplay that it's genuinely not worth playing the game if that's what intrigues you. you can just watch the like three(ish) relevant quests and read the codexes. it factors so little into the game's story that I was really surprised to find out that these were like The Popular Pairings because it was so not present in the main quests especially

like it feels weird to make this rec but genuinely just knowing the context and reading fic about it would be a better experience

i was thinking about it and why it didn't work for me and i think it's because it's all backstory. very elaborate and interesting backstory but still just backstory that mhy didn't intend to be anyone's active plotline

blade has the stellaron hunters (even trying to kill dan heng was something jingliu traumatized him into), jing yuan has running the xianzhou and the intricate plot of its politics, dan heng has the express crew and trying to be his own person

that's why fic does it better, because it focuses on the setup and backstory. there's something there and it is a decent concept but it's basically old news in canon

tbh I don't even care for blade/dan heng because of the aforementioned Trauma tm and how everyone wants to gloss over all that Baggage in fanon so I'm with you there, anon just asked for an explanation so I gave it

sucks all this is relegated mostly to codices in game but I've always been a sucker for stuff where canon goes light and leaves room for imagination. The fanworks are genuinely better than the canon material

i don't care for blade/dan heng, but i don't agree that dan heng was traumatized by him. the only thing that was established in the story was that 1) he thinks blade is dangerous and was worried for the rest of the express on luofu at the time and 2) he had a nightmare in which the scene transitioned to him gasping awake. i think it's too much to say "he was traumatized and it's glossed over in the story," but you are free to interpret their relationship that way.

that being said, i did want to say for op that blade and dan heng are at least more relevant to the main story just given the groups they're part of, so there is a chance they will get more content, but that would be further down the line.

i'm not saying they don't have a messy backstory nor that they have a good relationship, but there is also jingliu's companion quest where he willingly approaches him, too?

i just wouldn't say the writers glossed over their own story because the intent of the story might not be to establish that dan heng is so traumatized by blade he can't move.

I'd be all into it if fans treated it as a deeply fucked up enemies to lovers slow burn

instead everyone writes/draws it as secret long-term mutual pining and ignores that blade barely remembers his life as yingxing or even most of his encounters w/ dan heng (because kafka has to wipe his memories, or he goes insane), dan heng also barely remembers yingxing, the last thing he said to dan heng is "elio said I'm not allowed to murder you... for now >:[ ," and Dan Heng would sooner murder Blade back if he looked at him funny

i love the concept mhy cooked which is why i feel so let down by the ship, dan heng rightfully wants nothing to do with blade. meanwhile fandom just wants to treat blade as dan hengs emotional support and that he is not. man can't even function on his own

I think when Kafka revealed she had to erase Blade's memories of his encounter with Dan Heng and basically lull him into a hypnotic stupor to keep him from losing his mind was when I went ok, this is fucked up in a deeply unsexy way, I can't do this

tho ngl it did make KafBlade way, way more appealing to me

kafblade is underrated (ditto jingliublade, listen like being a psycho who made your friend crazier and seek revenge against himself, her, and dan heng is pretty wild. meanwhile he pressed her to kill him over and over when she was already done cause she had to kill their baiheng abomination... underrated)

when jingliu ditched blade he just sat around in a forest growing a beard for centuries and drinking snow. he only started functioning when kafka picked him up and cleaned him up

dan heng shows far more care for the astral express characters and also jing yuan as of recent patches than he does for blade

...anon, nobody here said he's "so traumatized he can't move," but he very clearly is pretty freaked out by the guy, a lot more than he is by the starship trooper bugs and planet-devouring monstrosities he's encountered. I think you might be projecting a personal frustration here

the writers aren't glossing over it (they wrote it!) but the fans are

ymmv, traumatized might be a strong word but I think this interpretation is coming more from a) how raw/fearful an emotional reaction he has to finding out about blade on the luofu, when up until that point in the story he's been shown as pretty level-headed and hard to shake and b) the way their interactions are described in Blade's character stories. "shivering violently all over and clutching his spear" again, is pretty raw and reads as a higher level of terror that's atypical of the Dan Heng we know. we never see him panic to this degree in any other high-stress situation, even when the MC gets stabbed seemingly to Death or Aglaea is threatening Murder-by-Castorice

yeah i agree with this. i meant that traumatized is a strong word to use for this situation and saying that people and the writers have glossed over it. ymmv is how i feel about this because it is up to your interpretation.
