Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

DA but as someone who does write a lot of starters and tag outs, I generally take 20 minutes to an hour for each one. (Even at maximum boomerang speed on a texting meme my tags take about 10 minutes.)

genuinely, why does it take you that long? are you a perfectionist? a texting tag that's like less than 10 or 20 words feels crazy to spend 1-2 minutes per word

this is not me trying to neg you, I'm genuinely curious about what slows people down. I consider myself a fast tagger in contrast but it's hard to ask partners why they're slow without it seeming like I'm trying to rush them

anon, lol. some people just aren't as quick at writing. like some people can do math in their head and some people need to work the problems out. it's not that deep.

comparing it to mental math actually helps me understand it a lot more, lol. thank you!

this is normal for some people

tbf i spend most of that time staring at a wall in thought, not writing out each individual word

I've noticed some of my slower friends tend to second guess themselves a lot. I kind of throw a tag together and stick with my first instinct rather than making drafts and so on but that isn't 5e only way to go.

As my voice for a character gets better my tagging speed improves. Nevertheless, people are not going to notice if your character is not 100% on point unless it's egregious.

funny, i know a lot of speedy taggers who end up anxious later because they hate the tags they rushed out to "keep up", but most of the slow/medium people i know are always fine with what they've put out. rp has all kinds i guess

that sounds like me as a slow-medium speed tagger. it's probably a perfectionism thing, but i won't send a tag unless i'm pretty much completely happy with it. there may be objectively better ways to rp, but it would bother me too much to have a bunch of stuff out there in public that i didn't feel was my best effort.

i'm a speedy tagger who is the opposite: a lot of times i'll send out a tag i'm kind of 'meh' on, but then when i look back at it later it's like 'that was pretty good, actually.' i feel way more unsure about my tags immediately after i've posted them than i do once i come back to them.

+1

i also find that if i can put out a tag quickly it usually means i'm in the zone. the tags that take me hours or days to compose are the ones that end up feeling crappy because i've spent so much time staring at them and the writing has ended up feeling stiff and awkward.

i'm fast because i'm feeling the character voice and the idea. if i'm taking my time, it's always because i'm bogged down and something isn't feeling quite right (and never wholly does, but i just inevitably hit a point where i want to send something out).

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
da, but +1 to all of this.

This sounds like me... I don't do drafts but I do a lot of self-editing as I go instinctively (change this for parallelism, edit out that passive voice, break up this long sentence, restructure this paragraph to put a better hook at the end) so it takes longer than one would think for me to write a tag, lol

ayrt

yeah, and i don't think it's a bad thing! the only thing that i ever don't like about it is the few who like make themselves feel badly stressing. idc how long they take to tag me but i don't want them to feel badly for taking longer than i do!

Re: RP WOES

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
(da) for me it's that my first thought is rarely the best or most IC response so i usually have to edit a tag at least once (or just throw it out and start over)

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
mte, if it takes me too long to do tags for a character that's a big red flag to me that i don't actually have their voice down.

AYRT (sorry to take so long replying, kind of funny given the thread topic.)

- I do tags on my phone at about 50wpm, which is a lot slower than most people on keyboards.

- I like to wait after reading a tag to process my feelings and separate them from how my character would feel so I don't just reply as myself.

- For text tags I probably take a couple minutes to think, a couple minutes to write the tag, and then also an extra minute to pick an icon and preview for typos. Text memes and network posts also tend to become multiple boomerang threads at once so my inbox itself then also slows me down.

- For log tags I tend to be writing multiple paragraphs — usually I can clearly imagine what my character would feel and say (eg he's going to be annoyed and say "So what?") but I want to adequately convey that feeling and tone to the other person, so I will think about body language, ways to describe tone, if the tag will need some introspection to clarify for the player that I know my character is being rude but I'm going somewhere with it.

- In intense threads sometimes I play chess a little, because I can imagine multiple possible responses and want to pick one that works for the thread, so I might try and imagine how the other character could respond to each possibility, sometimes I'll rewrite a couple of times.

- With my favourite deep shippy PSLs sometimes I just stare into space and think about the ship and enjoy the dopamine for a while.

- I don't tend to draft aside from a brief read over for typos (necessary with phone tags since autocorrect is a bitch) but sometimes I'll realize I used the same phrase twice in close succession or did a 180 on tone for no reason and end up rewriting.

- I only play canon characters and I mostly have a handful of characters who all have one or two shippy psls, rather than just getting into the "rhythm" and voice of one character (when I focus on one guy I tend to find in retrospect what I felt was me inhabiting the character was just kind of character blur and he sounded a lot more like me than himself so I prefer not to do that and stay on my toes.)

damn this sounds exactly like me down to the taking a beat to process feelings. like if i'm loving a shippy thread and eager to keep it going or push things further i want to make sure i'm not letting that override an ic response when my character would be hesitant to put himself out there.
