Like, what’s your favorite aspect of your character, or the thing that you wanted to explore most about them? And have you gotten to explore it yet?

Gentle masculinity. In the current zeitgeist trying to convince men they have to be aggressive, loud, emotionless assholes to be men, it's nice to go back to earlier portrayals where men are gentle, introverted, emotional and not emasculated for it. I haven't gotten to explore it yet but I'm getting there.

- the intense power and the hidden emotions they have and the way in which those things create huge barriers to connection (connection they want). I've gotten to explore some of it, but not as deeply as I'd like. Working on it, though.

- the wide eye innocence that slow changes over the canon and how they still maintain some of the hope and the gumption they started with. Haven't really gotten to explore it yet but I desperately want to.

- the messy, almost toxic love they have for multiple people, and the very way they love, desperately clinging to the people they love but also wanting to forge a path for themselves. New character so I haven't yet gotten to explore this.

1. how hope is the cornerstone and thematic pillar of this (very jaded, cynical) character and how it's both kept them afloat but also probably been the source of so many problems/maladaptive coping mechanisms for them
- not yet really, not in a way that really breaks it open and examines it quite as i'd like, they come off a little too aloof/competent on the surface to break through to too easily

2. genuinely having loved (platonic) and mourning someone who everyone says you maybe shouldn't (the relationship was fine it's that the other character wasn't really the best person). grief and how it's messy and intimate and not entirely logical, and how you carry on afterwards
- nah this kind of thing i don't really think works as an rp thread with someone else so much as a self indulgent character study fic or something, it's so very rp equivalent of navel gazing and idk what the other side of the thread would get out of it

... actually when i think about it a decent chunk of my characters in their backgrounds can be seen as grappling with loss in various ways. the ones left behind kind of deal. this was not intentional and i only realized it now that i'm specifically thinking about it because it wasn't in fact the reason i was drawn to most of them, but it *is* a weird commonality to note.

1: the way they'd gone about their business in their first impression arc was so weird to me in such a fascinating and really funny way...wanted to study them like a bug. then the story progressed and it turned out this person is also working towards a completely impossible goal with all the confidence of somebody that might just achieve it. which explained the weirdness, and only made them more interesting to me. i've noticed that in general i'll gravitate towards sharp characters that abandon convention and willingly strip away the more human chunks of themselves in the name of one mission they'll achieve at any cost...

i do get to exercise the oddness of this character in rp every now and then, and it's fun. initial interactions always start off fairly normal but inevitably start steering towards "ooh this person's got Something going on huh" as time goes on

2: very earnest character with big dreams. turned out they weren't even a normal human all along, just a kind of ghost that hadn't realized they were a ghost; the big dreams simultaneously already happened and would never happen

their story role's wrapped and they're probably not coming back but the whole thing made me sad so i vicariously extend their narrative through rp lol. the unaware ghost trope can be fun to mess with. plus i've dabbled in hypothetical canon divergence stuff where they don't have to disappear but still have to grapple with this weird existence they know about now

i didn't even like my character in his canon, and fandom unanimously deciding he's a poor innocent baby made me hate him more. couldn't stand him for ages until i begrudgingly wrote him in a short fic for a friend's request, then i realized there were unexplored angles to his character that could lead to good CR (both positive and negative) in RP.

turns out he's really really fun to write and analyze outside the context of his canon. so my favorite thing about him is the same thing that made me hate him in the first place: he's a piece of shit with just enough loose ends for the potential to be redeemed.

there are characters from a recent-ish canon i finally got to enjoy that i think my character would play well off of, but the game i'm in isn't really suited to them and there's no real reason (castmates, etc.) to try to entice them to join. i just like the idea of them interacting with my dude lol.

do you guys have any similar wishes? characters you'd like to play with one day, dynamics you're interested in exploring, scenarios that sound fun to you, even if you can't find a way to make them work?

A lot. To this day, I regret the most not contacting people on memes, especially if they later either abandon the character, or quit RP entirely.

That said, one case I was really fortunate about was a character that was a polar opposite to mine, but given how busy they were with their respective fields and unable to think about what the other could do, there wasn't a reason for them to talk. Then, when an event arrived that messed with their memories, it became the catalyst for the two of them to form lasting CR I really loved.

there are two canons i'm into with magic, ocean-related characters in them. i really want the cross-canon or au CR from this because i think it would be cute!! but i havent gotten any bites yet.

you have to tag out. i know you don't want to but you have to. it's the quickest way to get other people invested in your character. then you'll build rapport and they'll tag you. if your character is not from a popular canon or has little to no cast mates you have to. even if you do you can't rely on that there's a chance there's a bunch of copies of your character running around. you have to tag out. you can't be a wallflower and expect people to flock to you. this isn't a romcom. you have to be proactive. you have to tag out.

Once when I was new to a game, a player approached me for CR. They posted with their OOC account and not their character journal. I responded enthusiastically, telling them yeah I love that character I'm so wild about their canon.

It turned out their character wasn't that character. The two characters shared a first name and I, being unfamiliar, mistook them for playing the wrong one. They never followed up and never talked to or tagged me again. I wonder if I should have just checked before saying anything, but once I realized I was fucking mortified.
