This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

I haven't been back in DWRP in a few years, so what is the social acceptability around posting two characters from the same canon on a TDM fully knowing you will only be apping one...but you want to see which one fits better and want to voicetest? Worried about making a potential cast dislike me preemptively for trying characters out.

that's generally the purpose of a tdm, to see if you feel the game's a good fit. trying to characters to figure out which one you like best falls in that category. if you're worried about seeming like you're playing bait and switch, just put in your top levels in an ooc comment (trying to decide between this and (other character) to narrow it down). then it's not a problem. not that it really is either way.

tbh i think if they know you're trying both out to get a feel for which one fits better they'll appreciate it as much as you will

a castmate that's comfortable playing the character is gonna play better and stick around longer

Is dwtools for Firefox down, or is it just not available for mobile? Only the Chrome version and the github are coming up when I Google it, and the link to the Firefox version on the github is dead.

dwtools for firefox died a long time ago. people pass around the file with the extension, which was uploaded by a player who still had it installed. the link is on the resources page. mind you, updated firefox doesn't accept it anymore. so you have to have old firefox, install the extension, and then if you update it'll stay installad

Related to PSL threads more than game threads, but do you have a threshold when it comes to old PSL tags -

If you were doing a PSL with someone and they got busy with game tags and life and haven't tagged you back in a year and then suddenly tagged you back, would you keep threading with them? I guess this varies depending on general interest in the thread and the characters involved, but I was just curious:

- Have you ever tagged back something really old, and how long have you kept PSL threads going, even with breaks in between?

what do you do when an application asks for a wiki link for history but you play an obscure character from an obscure canon with no wiki, or a terrible wiki? when you've got a liar whose every claim is treated as true, or a woman who's given the worst possible reading, or a nearly blank page?

I've tended to link with a disclaimer if it's not too bad and otherwise just ask on the faq, bc I can write up a neat little history, no prob. It just gets a little frustrating sometimes, the assumption that any appable characters would either be ocs or have a fandom.

Tips for getting into a character's head?

I'd like to app a certain character into a game at some point, but I've first been trying to voice test them in memes with very little luck so far.

Does anyone have any tips for things or prompts that help them explore parts of the character they might not otherwise? I've written Ye Olde Character Studies, but they don't help me much when I'm playing with a character unlike anyone or anything they would meet in canon. It might be overkill to some people, but the confidence in writing the character goes a long way for me.

question for bakerstreet goers.

i love crosscanon blind tagging a lot, and in the interest of facilitating this and trying to fish for it, i'm thinking of putting "open starter" type prompts under my top-levels on some memes. basically open-ended tags with a simple hook at the end, kind of like what you'd put on a game TDM.

would you think this was weird if you saw it / would you side-eye someone for doing it?

random question, but is it possible to hide specific entries on your journal without changing the "number of journal entries to show on the recent entries page" to 1 or making the entry private/access list only? i want to be able to link a friend without dw to a specific entry without that entry being visible on the front page of the journal itself, if that makes any sense. thanks in advance!

what's the etiquette/consensus on what kinds of icons to use for smut threads? are nsfw icons alright to have on an account you also use for sfw rp? i'm newish here (had some threads but never smut) and i don't wanna mess up

What's the best way to approach a situation where you realize, mid-thread, that something the other player is doing is a hard no for you? The content in question is not listed in my permissions as a sensitive or unplayable topic for me (because it never has been in the past), but the other player described it in such graphic detail that it's made me really uncomfortable, and I don't want to continue the thread.

On one hand, I want to be upfront about why I can't continue and not leave the other player hanging. On the other hand, I can't think of a nice way to say, "This has never been a problem before, but your writing in particular has made me realize that I can't handle this topic." Obviously, I'd prefer not to make them feel bad, as again, this topic is not listed in my permissions so they had no way of knowing I'd have such a negative reaction to it.

Have you ever done a mass opt-out of RPing with a large group of characters in a game? For example, opting out of interacting with members of a certain canon (so, like, 4+ people). There's a game I'm considering, but it has a couple of casts I would really prefer not to interact with. I'd like to know if I can quietly opt out of interacting with all the included characters without any drama, or if such an action would be so unusual that it would inevitably attract scrutiny.

imagine i'm playing a character who has some kind of minor passive magical ability that affects other characters. Similar examples: know whenever the person they're talking to is lying, sense their feelings, mimic their voice exactly, gain the ability to shapeshift into them.

what would you expect to see in terms of permissions?

a. an opt-in where players can choose to have these powers work on theirs.
b. a note saying the character's powers work on everyone by default but you can contact them to opt out if you really want to.
c. a note saying that the powers are an integral part of the character, no opt-outs allowed for that, but they'll respect DNI requests if you send one.

are there any of a-c that you'd find unacceptable or offputting? if i chose b, would you expect me to check other players' permissions pages in case they already have relevant preferences listed, or is assumed consent unless they actively opt out acceptable?

anyone got any advice or general impressions to share re: going on antidepressants for the first time and what kind of effect that might have on ability to write and rp?

not looking to talk about mental health specifics so hopefully this is ok under the rules, just kinda trying to gauge what to expect in terms of the hobby itself so i can know how to sort of plan for my next few weeks/months (i.e. if i should consider wrapping and hiatusing or dropping from my games because i'll likely lose my energy for a long while, that sort of thing). i get that it's probably different for everyone, but having a frame of reference would still help. thanks in advance!
