i should've been clearer, i am the one using hyperbole in the pseudo-quote, but i guess the joke got lost. my bad. i didn't mean you, i meant anons like "White lies are absolutely a necessity in this hobby". all the anons justifying the white lies are saying they need to use them because if they don't the "weirdos" will give them trouble. dropping gsai may've been hyperbole, but the "amount of weirdos" is their actual reason, which is why an argument started when multiple people pointed out "it's not that bad, most people don't care".

Thanks for being cool, anon. I guess the overall response just comes off as a little (a lot) breathless to me when I didn't say anything either way about communication in my original
first and only at the time comment in the thread? Like, it was a joke, because I have met a lot of weirdos (general) in this hobby, and it's crazy to me that someone has somehow never encountered that.

I can joke I've had that lots-of-weirdos experience while also still being a person who thinks communication is good and fine at least 75% of the time, with exceptions in cases of obvious red flags (which I've been around long enough to be able to see the tells). The 84839 aggressive replies reacting like I said a bunch of additional things I didn't actually say is why it comes off like a bunch of people freaking out... y'all don't need to argue with me about the thing I didn't say, I literally am in agreement with the spirit of what you're saying.

nobody said that there are no weirdos at all. just that there aren't enough of them to be a problem. if someone does cry to you then... block them and move on. people are honest all the time without much trouble.

nobody was aggressive except for one comment. no, it doesn't come off like "a bunch of people freaking out". this is why people are arguing. because they explained something perfectly well and they keep getting called "freaking out" and "attacking". if that's you, then i have news for you, you are thanking me for being cool but insulted me on another subthread. if that wasn't you, then i say this with the upmost sincere empathy and not as insult: you need to leave this thread because you're making something about you when it isn't about you and that can't be good for your mental health

The point is y'all were reacting to a thing that was not said by me, at any point, as if I were one of the other anons you were having an argument with about white lies. You are ascribing sweeping additional statements to a single line joke about weird people in this hobby, and the dogpile of "actually YOU'RE the problem, you white liar" responses to a seemingly entirely different conversation than the joke I made is why it comes off as aggressive.

Also, if you're trying to persuade people that communication is ok and safe to do, it helps not to downplay people's experiences. We have stories on here every other day about overinvested rpers being weird at someone for one reason or the other, and I'm sure there are people who have had some pretty upsetting experiences that, while not the majority, have still stuck with them in a bad way. Talking down to them as if they're worried about nothing, no matter how right you may or be, isn't going to convince them.

i think people have a right to share their experiences as equally valid, though? which is what they have been doing in this thread. the fact that they are doing so does not negate yours. the only person who can be said to be downplqying is the anon who effectively said if 90% of (generic) your tagmates are wankers, maybe you're the problem - but even they said, '90%' (at which point, yeah, if someone keeps running into that extreme of rotten apples, possibly they need to curate their space a bit more)

you mean "I want to live in the alternate universe ayrt inhabits where socially maladjusted weirdos aren't painfully common in this hobby"? because yeah everyone got that was a joke, but you also gave +1 to the previous comment, which is why you were included in the group of "the other side of the argument".

i don't even care about this argument anymore. i'm genuinely shaking my head at how you're taking this. i'm not saying this in a condescending way and i apologize if it comes off that way. but you keep saying things about anons attacking you for things that you "didn't say" and that's just taking things way too personally. we've always used the general you/we to mean all the people on each side. people just happen to reply to the last comment in the chain. no wonder you think people are using "personal attacks" if you think they're for you specifically
