these icons have truly been a terrible time. i don't always toss a dnt on my stuff but these icons are covered in my blood

manga coloring? super dark lighting?

manga, but not coloring. although i've done several sets of those two types and know the struggle

these are going be greyscale manga icons, but the screen tone is so heavy that i'm having to erase it and redraw the lines. the linework throughout the character's hair is often thin and wispy so it's not easy to clean up the screen tone without also snatching them partially bald

anons shared some tips, but i've found that my method looks best but it's so time consuming

oh dang, that's a herculean task indeed, my sympathies nonny. i hope your character's hair is short at least... i'll be cheering you on from afar!

could you share a panel? i can try to run it through my paint's image resize, it might offer different results, i notice when i use it vs other programs fine details are usually preserved. ok with a sock if you prefer not to just toss it on rpa!

Hi anon, if you're using photoshop the lasso tool and pen tool set to 'path' work best for me. FTR i use a wacom intuos but the pen tool works well with a mouse once you get the hang of it too.

wow! the lines held up fairly well. i'm using procreate on ipad w/ pencil so i'll try to see how to refine the settings a bit more when i use the magic wand (if that's possible. i'm still a baby on the app) this gives me some hope

i did a few random crops and on last one i added grey to see how it might blend

those don't look bad, but i am needlessly particular! i was getting similar results before i switched to my current method. it's the little pebbling effect that the resized screen tone causes that bothers me

i really appreciate you taking the time to do this tho. tysm! it's good to know i'm not the only one struggling with csm panels! there's a csm character with solid black hair that i've seen around, and i think their icons are so beautiful. that solid hair would have been a dream to work with but alas...!

yeah, i misunderstood the problem as the tone making the hair lose details in the resize, not the tone being the issue, that's my bad. there are certain tones that really just don't behave and that's one of them

usually for that type i use a gray layer, but people probably suggested that before. i tried it anyway and put a gray layer under the panel before resizing to see if it evened it out any, color was #bdbdbd

i'm not sure how consistent that would be though and there's still tone in it, it isn't a solid color
