I had a character I wanted to play who just ticked every box of things that interested me. History, personality, shit that happens in story, the deep moral quandry and intense grey area. They had it all, the plots and relationship exploration I could do with them was so promising. I was hype.

It's pretty widely agreed that this character was basically the only good thing about a whole season of their canon show. The show is a bit niche, but popular and got moreso as it went. I Loved them, really did. I went looking for canonmates so hard, even got a few messaging me to plan threads! But half of those vanished right after I wrote starters and the rest have gradually followed suit. Now it's just me with my Main Female Character.

I know I am a good writer, my tags have hooks, I write starters, communicate, I don't flake, but she just...doesn't appeal to anybody but me. After about 6 months of trying super hard, tagging out, tagging crosscanon, crossmedium, short memes, long memes, EMP and PSL finder, I give up.

I decided to put her back on the shelf and pull out an old male side-character journal from an equally popular but almost decade old canon. Threw him on two memes and now I have two dozen threads. Everyone's commending me on how good his voice is and, yes, I am very happy to have the threads and glad they like my writing. I am very fortunate to have all these good times I currently have, and thankful for the compliments. I am having fun playing him! But...man.

What could have been, you know?

(This woe is not intended as a scathing indictment of male v female characters. I only mention it because female lead journals tend to get sideeyed on the assumption that they'll be bland or OOC. Secondary character dudes rarely have this same problem and are often popular because they have loud personalities and looser/less extensive canon. Or at least, thats how these two probably seem from the outside looking in. I have no substantial gender related grievances.)

I know exactly what you're talking about. I've pretty much given up on trying to find PSLs for my canon female character and just focus on my guys. Basically, it boils down to the fact that there aren't many female RPers who will RP as the male character in m/f. I've heard us called rare unicorns, in fact.

Anyway, if you still want to play your lady, let me know and we can plot. I have a few LA canon guys she can choose from who would love her company.

Is that really true? I haven't had much luck tagging out with my male characters but maybe they aren't the right type or I'm doing something wrong. Any idea what types are in need (things like age, personality, genre, anime/LA)?

It's been true for me, others that I've spoken to over the years, and OP, but I admit, we're just a small sample I guess. And when one takes into account one's character's preferences, it doesn't help matters.

As for what's in need, I can't speak for the others, but my female character looks for someone at least in their twenties, LA or LA-adjacent (I think that's the term, like Final Fantasy, BG3, Dragon Age, Mass Effect), charismatic, and at least morally gray or anti-hero if not complete villain, but they have to be a good person underneath it all, or at least a good man toward her. I think those are the main things. I tried shipping her with the hero type before and she got bored.

that's not 'LA adjacent' you listed four video games, it's literally just video games.

can't believe we're erasing video games as a genre, when will the LAs stop oppressing the rest of us?! before you know it, the main genres will just be LA, anime, books and gacha...

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2024-05-02 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
the book characters will also be la adjacent before long. gacha's also frequently lumped in with anime anyway

lbr eventually the genres will just be "close enough to la" and "that weeb shit"

so you (general you) just dislike la stuff? do real live people skeeve you out or what? honest question because i see the la bland/ugly argument and honestly its the species you are part of so that argument has never made sense to me for all these years and i am looking to understand it.

da (obviously) but i don't prefer to play against LA PBs. for me it's mostly bc I don't like the idea of attaching a real person's face to whatever fucked up wringer i'm putting our characters through. like, i get that actors probably are used to/agree to idk... people sexualizing them or using their likeness for whatever, and i still tag with LA characters and don't go around telling people to stop using LA PBs or that it's morally wrong etc.etc. it's just a low grade 5% level of discomfort for me. (and also why imo i don't have any associated discomfort with playing against a realistic videogame model face)

that, and i feel like i've encountered a fair number of rpers who are really uhh fixated on the actor behind their PBs, or play a bunch of characters who all have the same actor/want to play against characters who are played by the same actor. it gives me weird crossing ic/ooc boundary vibes, and like they don't want to play mashing our barbies together so much they want to cyber with someone wearing the face of their favorite actor.

I always thought LA-Adjacent would be like MCU's Rocket Raccoon. Technically a live action movie, even if that particular character is five ping pong balls taped to a morph suit.

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2024-05-03 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's just considered la. I usually see LA adjacent used to refer to vidya with a "realistic" style.

Woe OP, I guess? IDK what the abreviation would be here.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-02 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think between people looking for canonmates, people looking for shipping/smut, people who want to play M/F specifically, and people who play the male half of that, it's just a lot of people filtered out already?

I try to hit up OC (M/F or OTA) dudes when I see them, and I'm not especially picky about LA versus Anime, but there aren't a lot of them. That, or they only post to a few, select memes. Which is fine, of course, be selective, it just cuts the pool of available people down again.

From what I've seen there's a pretty good variety of ages/personalities/implied genres? (I would have, personally, killed for a grifter or two, but that's my personal preference and not indicative of any trends.)

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2024-05-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
no, it's not. the problem i've experienced as a male character player who ships m/f is that a lot of female character players are basically only angling for specific male characters to ship with. it's not that they want to play m/f, it's that they want to play m/f with a very small selection of male characters, so when they can't find players of those particular characters who want to ship m/f with them, they claim that no one wants to play m/f when the reality is that they're just picky.

da

(Anonymous) 2024-05-03 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
While I've noticed this as well every now and then when playing my male characters, it was only when I was doing the same thing, angling for a particular female canon character. But other than that, I've had no trouble seeing as there are tons of fish in the sea that my guys can tag and start chatting up, so I don't think of it as a real problem or reason to bring up, really.

Basically, if a female character doesn't want to interact with your guy, there are a ton more who will. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying?

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2024-05-03 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
i was referring to the claim that there aren't many female rpers who will rp as the male character in m/f and saying that it's nowhere near being true and that the people who make that claim are the female character players who are only interested in shipping with specific male characters and then get mad when the male characters they want to ship with don't want to ship with them.

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2024-05-03 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
da

i have probably 2 or three female characters in my roster, only one of which i play with any regularity. i prefer playing her m/f. most of my guys are ota, but i have a couple that have some very intense m/f ships and i prefer to keep them m/f only. i don't think i have any guys that i play as solely m/m. i enjoy m/f as the male character. i enjoy it as the female character, but i find it's way easier to get ships for my dudes than my ladies.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-03 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I see what you're saying, and it's probably a piece of the puzzle for sure. But not in the OP's case. I'm the one who replied to her offering my guys, and she was happy to play with any of them no problem (and they're not flavors of the month either). We're in the middle of plotting. :D

Everyone has their own perspective. We can only tell you what we've seen and been through. But I think we all can agree that if one is only willing to rp with a few specific characters, then one has no room to legitimately complain or get mad if they don't get to ship with those characters. Usually, people like that are easy to spot, and you just avoid them, at least from what I've witnessed in the past.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2024-05-03 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
i was thinking while reading this i see male characters either as ota, m/f, or "if you check their journal they're clearly m/f only" all the time. i dont play het most of the time so i dont know the players' gender as i dont reach out to them. maybe the memes i check are just the ones they all flock to?

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2024-05-03 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I keep reading and rereading this comment and I still cannot tell what you are trying to say. Do you think male players looking for m/f playing male characters are part of this issue or??

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2024-05-03 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Sub-op specified "females playing males in m/f" while op did not. so i added in that disclaimer that i didnt know who the players of these characters were. just that i often see male characters who are open to or exclusively into m/f, in spite of the comments that act like they're nonexistent.

I've noticed a bit of a disparity there too, maybe not to unicorn status but there seems to be a more substantial skew in male and female characters (*who want to play M/F) then there used to.

Hit me with a sock and I'll jump in your DMs Anon. Even if we can't figure something out, the offer made my heart grow three sizes.

Handshake of solidarity from another het enjoyer who'll play both. TBH I ended up a bit burned out on the whole thing though because I'd play the m character for my partners but never got to ship my female characters in return :( now I just haven't shipped in years.

Handshake of solidarity to you too, anon.

That was also the case with me. I didn't even limit them (male or female characters) to strictly het. I'm an 'everybody is pan unless explicitly stated otherwise...and even then maybe' sort of player.

I don't even mind playing guys? I have fun with everyone I play. And I get why people avoid main character women, I do, it's just a shame. (Less of a shame now that I don't have to put her back on the shelf, though.)
