Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

I have an idea for a massive fantasy game where characters would be granted an element and house. Super complex and rewarding, like a RP dnd campaign.

But dwrp modding looks exhausting and thankless, not to mention the annoying wankers who want more for nothing. So I’m thinking I’d start a Patreon and charge $20 a month per player to play in the game, for artistic time and labor. You pay for art commissions but not for writing, but are way more demanding on the latter. Deserves pay. Thoughts?

op- not bait at all. I’ve been paid for constructing several dnd campaigns, and love world building and writing. the dwrp format would also be an interesting challenge on new execution.

but I wouldn’t do it for free. Paying artists is so important, and AI is already taking over enough content work as it is. Naturally, I would treat it like a job. But seems that players would generally be unwilling to pay?

if a game were actually good tbqh i'd chip in a few bucks every month, though not $20, but if this isn't bait i think you'd have an extremely tough time getting people to dive in with no proof that you're a good mod or know what you're doing

Re: GAME IDEAS

(Anonymous) 2024-04-17 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
the site is free to use for people that aren't chuffed about icons. it's a minimum of $3 a month if you want a bunch. you want to charge more than a netflix account, per person, per month when they can still get kicked/ac swept? i expect you want more than five players, so you'd be making more than 100 a month to mod an rp game on a free rp site. if you get 40 players, you'd be making 800 dollars. a month. to mod an rp game.

no.

not to mention that's just an unnecessary expense for most people, and you'd be battling with expectation and entitlement. 'i pay to be in this game, so you'd better let me get what i want/do what i want/invite and app in who i want, hey, why aren't you on 24/7? i'm paying for this game and you'd better answer my faq/tdm/event question right fucking now'.

you think regular mod work would cause burnout? imagine the entitlement of paid modwork.

Re: GAME IDEAS

(Anonymous) 2024-04-18 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
mte

it's already hard enough reminding ppl that mods are not paid customer service reps for their games. imagine the nastiness of actually making yourself a paid customer service rep of your game...

the entitlement will be through the roof and the money will not be worth it

the wank would probably be amazing to popcorn from a distance tho

iirc there are actually pay-to-play systems in place for D&D games via d20, you'd probably have more luck setting up and advertising there. Not sure you'd get many people at $20 a pop per month in DWRP with no proof you're like not a known flake+wanker yourself, but I could be wrong.

Re: GAME IDEAS

(Anonymous) 2024-04-18 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
$20 a month per player is absolutely delusional. no game that exists or has ever existed in the history of LJRP or DWRP would come anywhere near close to that.

the only way this could work would be to make it an optional tip and make sure it's completely anonymous, because if someone knows you know they gave you money and don't like something you do, you'd find out just how truly thankless people can be real fast.

The issue here IMO is that while, in a vacuum, paying someone $20 a month to put in a lot of hours and effort for your entertainment is more than reasonable, DWRP isn't a vacuum. It's a community that has existed for a very long time as a hobby that is free or close to it for a lot of the playerbase. The thing about paying for it, especially paying $20 a month for it, is that people are going to expect a level of service for that money that goes beyond what they can already get for free. And their ideas of what that level of service looks like are going to conflict, because there is no baseline expectation for that what looks like in this space, and there's no "mod brand recognition" to help set those expectations.

I really feel like the only type of mod who could pull this off is someone with proven experience, past success, and a signature style such that people know what they're signing up for and whether or not it's worth it to them ahead of time. Is someone I know and trust to be an excellent, reliable mod running a game that checks all of my boxes and laying out exactly what I'll be getting for my money in advance? Then I might be in! Any other scenario? Very risky use of my funds!

Not even touching all the logistical issues. Do I have to pay for the month if I'm on hiatus? What if I'm on hiatus for half the month? What if I fall on hard times and can't pay for three months, but I've been established as an active player with a very well-connected character for a year now? What if I take half my CR with me when I'm forced to drop?

a totally anonymous optional tip system might go over ok. wouldn't mind occasionally dropping a couple bucks in idk a ko-fi or whatever for mods of a game i really love or smth

keeping the contributions anon from others and yourself would be critical, though, or the "I gave you a lot of money so pls treat me special" and/or "you gave the mods a lot of money so clearly they're gonna play favorites with you" etc drama would be deafening

20$ monthly subscription for the privilege of playing in a game, though? eeeh

Re: GAME IDEAS

(Anonymous) 2024-04-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
assuming this isn't trolling, you'd at-minimum better have paid or owned assets for the game if you're going to charge people for it. because the way we already use borrowed art (not even getting into the AI discussion, that's not salient here) is not going to fly.

that said, this feels like it opens more cans of worms than you'd ever need to fish with, so...good luck with this, I guess?

Re: GAME IDEAS

(Anonymous) 2024-04-18 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
i'll be honest that as a gacha player, the idea of paying for a game unless i already know i'll invest myself into it completely is just unappealing. i pay for my one game because i already spent months on it, had a lot of fun, and decided to support the makers by selecting their packs, but the catch is that those packs also gives benefit to me as a player that i wouldn't get as a free player. even then i pay maybe $5 a month and a little extra when i particularly like a pack.

i would be willing to pay the mods in my current game since i have been here a few months and found it fun. if they shared their ko-fi i'd drop money each month for the fun they give me, but that's by my choice.

if a new game pops up and was all hey you can join us for $20 a month i wouldn't even give it a second glance unless i already know the mods track record and can trust them to be a good team. a rando? i wouldn't at all, especially with how often mods flake their own games before they get anywhere.

sa

to use your art commissions idea for example... commissioning one art is different from supporting the artist's patreon. you're not asking for a one time payment for a whole game on the go, you're going for a subscription. a subscription model like the one you are thinking of only works after an artist has proven they have the service a person wants, and most people kind of just look at the free art and never join the patreon too if it doesn't work for them.

+1 id def be more willing to pay out of appreciation for an established good experience im having. not so much at all for the unknown quantity that a brand new game in a space with other free games represents

Re: GAME IDEAS

adding to the chorus of other valid points being brought up in this thread: what's to stop someone from paying to play and they come in and swipe all your stuff and leave, go off and make a new FREE version of your game.

you're really showing yourself to be new in this space. and there's nothing wrong with new blood but i need you to understand: dwrp is not the same as tabletop and you are deeply underestimating a community that frequently makes all its own shit from the ground up for free. this is how we've always done it.

why should anyone pay for yours when we can just make our own?

serious response: I do think it would actually be possible to make a pay-for-play RP in the DWRP space, but I don't think it would work as the type you're describing. I think this model would work best with short-term, high-intensity games (like murder games). these usually have a set runtime, have one single playerbase instead of rolling apps, and require a high level of engagement from both players and mods. of course, it would be a difficult market to break into (the murdergame scene is already pretty insular and you'd be competing against well established mods with a stable of dedicated players running their games for free), but if you could establish yourself in the space as a good mod I'm sure you'd have people more than willing to pay you pretty well to run a 3-month game for, say, 20 players.

I'm more skeptical that a pay-to-play model would work in a normal DWRP game, with monthly apps and broad monthly events, but I think it's possible you could make an optional patreon work. if you show yourself to be a good mod who has made a fun game, you'd probably have several players willing to tip in at a $2 or $5 tier, and you may even get lucky and catch a whale or two willing to shell out a higher amount. if you got even a few whales you could start bringing in some pretty nice supplementary income.
