next time i'm sticking to my antisocial ways

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

Haven’t felt great lately. I’m reasonably fit, I don’t have a garbage diet, but my doc says my blood sugar is in the diabetic range. I’m devastated. No history of it in my family. I’ve switched to a super healthy diet and I have my energy and focus back but I’m sad I’ll never get to enjoy the occasional treat anymore. It’s bumming me out.

aw anon, i'm sorry :( it's always rough to have your body pull something unexpected on you like this, and i'm sorry you have to deal with this. i am not a doctor, but i had a family member with diabetes and from what i could tell she definitely could have a treat every now and then without it upsetting her blood sugar levels too much; do you think it might be worth asking your doctor whether it's possible for your treatment to account for a little treat occasionally? i get that a big part of diabetes management is changing your diet and stuff, but i also think that you deserve to treat yourself every now and then and if it's at all possible to make that happen in a way that's healthy and sustainable for you, then it's worth investigating! sorry if this is too much, i just really empathised with the sadness you wrote about, and i really hope you can have your favourite treats sometimes ❤

hey anon!! i don't eat sugar because my family has a history of inflammatory diseases, and there actually are genuinely good treats that don't involve sugar (or sucralose, which interferes with your metabolism unhelpfully)! they do tend to be a bit more expensive, but imo it's beyond worth it to keep yourself healthy. choczero is a really good brand for chocolates and coffee flavoring, and there's an excellent hot chocolate that goes by sssssomething birds, i think, i forget, but it'll pop up on amazon if you look for monk fruit hot chocolate or something along those lines.

you'll thank yourself if you get into baking with sugar substitute mixes, too. you're best off looking for recipes that specify they're no-sugar, though, because sugar is "wetter" than substitutes and no matter what the packages say, it may be 1:1 for sweetness but it's not 1:1 for the texture of the finished product. highly recommend looking for finely-ground blends like king arthur vs. store brands, which tend to have larger crystals and can make your supposed-to-be-perfect treats crunchy.

it sounds like you're feeling exactly the same way i felt after my diagnosis. it feels shitty, but once you really get the hang of eating healthier you might discover there's actually more room in your diet for treats than you realized. i'm not saying go run out and buy a giant bag of twizzlers, but don't go thinking you necessarily can never eat a slice of pie again.

Anon is this type 2 or type 1? Either way don't internalize the blame too hard into self hatred if all your hard work doesn't work out the way you wish it would. Your doctor is flagging it now so you can keep your eye on it now without it going neglected (it happens sometimes with other people). Also so you can get into the groove of handling it the best way you can without totally compromising your happiness in life.

I got a prediabetes scare too, despite previously having no risk facotrs. You absolutely can snack, in fact, part of how I got my HBA1C back down to very healthy levels was avoiding snacking on overly sugary cafe cakes and other things by having a small piece of dark chocolate with every meal. Keeps me from crashing, but doesn't raise glucose levels too high. And like other anons said, there's great alternatives to sugar like sweets made with artificial sweeteners which have very low concentrations of fructose that won't spike your blood glucose levels. Get a nice diabetic friendly jam like Mulberry's, but please note most sweeteners have a laxative like effect, so don't eat more than one or two of these sweet treats a day (fructose is natural and won't give you the runs.)

You don't have to live a life where you can never indulge, that's not true at all.

Also, there's these lovely ice creams that tell you how mant calories are in a tub, I'm fond of the brownie one. A scoop of these is only like 74 calories... comparable to a fruit!

Just practice restraint, don't have a bunch of sweets around the house, but also, always have a safe snack or two, to keep you from craving and overindulging on something with WAY too much sugar (avoid avoid AVOID most cafe cakes, I have no idea why they use such obscene amounts of sugar that's several times more than a person should consume in a whole day in one slice, you're better off with little supermarket dark chocolates or Betty Crocker mug cakes or jello snacks or whatever), etc., and it'll be so much easier to stick to it. ^^

You can do this, anon!! Also, there's gun and easy 7 minute workouts (basically doing 30 reps of something, then resting, then repeat 30 reps...), that you can easily do even lying down, that can help you get healthier without putting a great effort into things, but you'll still feel the burn.

Wait, there was one risk factor I always had. Family history. Recently, weight gain, which I'm working on losing, although with the muscle strengthening exercises, the scale number doesn't budge much, but clothes fit better! ^^
