yeah herbert's writing is super crunchy and, having read the first book with my eyes glazing over for a lot of it, I like that the films helped me understand why the worldbuilding etc is cool, and made me care even a little bit about Paul as a person

I love to read but struggle with a lot of famous fantasy/sci-fi for that reason. different strokes and so forth

this. saying that you're just not interested in a thing is fine, but calling it "boring and predatory" to someone who is clearly into it makes you the shitty one.

hi - dune book player here. we're very, very few and thirsty for fresh blood. we won't think any less of you for playing from your adaptation of choice (the movies!), which is just as valid as ours. the movies and novels are actually pretty different in several characterization choices for paul, jessica and chani (and especially alia!) in what the second movie captured. if someone wants to avoid you on purist principles, it is likelier to be upfront over that, rather than because you did or didn't know the deepest nuance of tleilaxu realpolitik. you're good and you should not hesitate to play from the movies! i hope we run into each other c:

what's the vibe around here about playing characters portrayed by problematic actors? like ezra miller's the flash or gal gadot's wonder woman, i'm really interested in playing a character like that but i don't want to seem like i'm supporting the shitty stuff the actor's done either.

honest answer: depends how well known their scandal is. a fair few people with no dc interaction don't know about gal gadot, for instance, so you might get play for wonder woman, especially crosscanon. but, for an example, it would have been really hard to get traction with any johnny depp characters a while back during the amber heard trial.

i'm going to say outright, all gacha are predatory by nature. "less bad" is still "bad," and as someone with a family history of gambling addiction (my grandpa made his living off gambling) i understand where you're coming from

but my question is do you say this only about hsr or do you say it about genshin too? because in genshin if you pull for both character and weapon, the weapon banner is an absolute joke. if you pull for only characters the rates are the same. the amount of primos vs jade aren't comparable in the sense chest hunting takes longer than most hsr content. basically, if you're only saying this about one and not the other it makes it seem like you're only say it because you already dislike the game

if the plot of hsr isn't for you that's okay, if you don't like the gacha aspects, that's also okay. it's your time you'd be investing into it, not someone else's and as we all have limited time you can choose how you spend it. but i also agree with the other anons saying you were tactless and rude

your friend enjoys the game, spends a lot of time on it, may be spending money on it. please remember that their time is also limited and they can choose to spend it on what they want too. next time just say it isn't for you and let that be the end of it unless they get pushy

just wanna say that as of about two weeks ago, i'm also dipping back into DWRP, anon! it's good to know there are some of us drifting back to our old haunts still.

depends. gal gadot is often viewed on the same level as robert downey jr - cringe politics but fine as a pb. ezra miller on the other hand is a genuine abuser, and will turn more people away. the majority of people would be understanding if you picked a new pb for a character played by someone totally scorched earth. if it's a superhero you could do something like have icons of their uniforms and logos for flavor and someone else for the face icons. you don't have to make a big deal out of a disclaimer, we'll get it.

fwiw while some people will see someone using a very problematic pb and think the player either doesn't care or maybe thinks their actions are fine, i think most people will avoid tagging simply because they don't want to be reminded of shitty things every time they see an icon and aren't thinking about the player and writing fanfic about them in their heads.

if someone is already criticizing predatory gachas, what in the world makes you think that they'd be praising genshin and shitting on hsr in the same breath?

anyway if they didn't realize their friend was a big hsr fan and thought they were just being asked their opinion, it's fine if they start out talking about how much they hate it - that's how I'd respond about any mhy gacha if asked without context. if I find out the other person is a fan after the fact, I'll shut up, but until then why not say what you feel?

I'm having some issues with my icons and was wondering if I could get some advice.

I make icons on my laptop with PS. Only recently have I found out some of my icons look like pixelly shit to everyone else. They also look poor on my phone, which is what I use to tag - I figured it was just my phone, but everyone else's icons look normal.

I do 100x100 pngs. It's not the original image quality or anything - just something I'm not seeing on my laptop.

gal gadot served in the idf, that's way different from rdj being a conservative weirdo

I judge anybody that plays an Ezra Miller Flash. There are so many better incarnations of the Flash to play around with.

imo they are both bad and i wish i wouldn't see either of them even as pb icons for characters they play, but i'm not sure most people share that pov

is it possible someone playing a character played by a problematic actor believes that actor is the epitome of morality and that by using their image in a way which gives them no benefit at all they are supporting them? yes. is it what a sensible person would assume? no. are those people's opinions worth caring about? absolutely not

tho playing ezra miller's flash would get you rightfully blacklisted for other reasons

All of the advice so far is good, but personally, if it's a character I've never heard of before — so no flavor of the month fad canons — the top level is well written, and it doesn't seem like you're muse-dumping and ghosting... I'll give whoever it is a shot. I'm also the type of person to do a little research on a person's tagging habits, so if I can look in a meme's flatview and see that you make an effort to tag out, even if your potential partners flake on you, I'll notice and eventually get around to tagging you first. After that, it comes down to your tag content and whether I think your take on your character is interesting.

In that sense, what's actually most helpful to me is an updated thread tracker. I don't mind seeing blurbs and wishlists because those are pretty helpful and help me form a decision on which character I'd like to try with yours, but a thread tracker can tell me directly what kinds of characters you choose yourself and what dynamics you want to try, along with what kinds of tags you write. Tagging out takes a lot of effort, I know, but it really is a useful exercise.

In the end, sometimes I do tag out to random characters because I think they're hot or if I find their personality intriguing, regardless of whether I know their canon or not, but that's harder to control. What you can control is how much you write, and that requires blindly tagging out to crosscanon you find interesting.

meaning it sounds like an excuse which could've upset their friend too. they aren't wrong about gachas being predatory, but that's also not exactly what they said. call me nitpicky but "mentioned that I thought it was a boring and uninteresting, predatory gacha" is not "mentioned that I thought it was another boring and uninteresting, predatory gacha"

obviously they might not have phrased it this way to the person and obviously it's dumb to read too into a woe when most of us aren't thinking too hard about what we write. i've just met too many people with double standards where one thing is acceptable and another, very same thing (or even one thing that is the exact same but someone they like does it or is into it) isn't just because they don't like it. it's how people work. so i thought i'd ask "is one acceptable and not the other to you? if so, your reasons might be a bit different than what you think"

looks somewhat like an issue of not being cleaned properly and quality loss from resize. for the former, might be an issue with brightness/contrast settings or the tilt of the screen, sometimes that can make a difference

i use cs2 but i usually use the uh... i forgot what the option is called ngl, something that lets you select based on similar colors. i select a white part and hit delete, making it so the white parts are now transparent (needs to be a raster layer). if you want you can toss a red, blue, or black bg under it to see if there are any egregious pixels you can, otherwise just toss a white or light gray bg under it and set the lineart layer to either darken or multiply, whichever your preference is

some other anon might be able to help you with resizing, but usually i use crops ending in X00 or X05 and idk. i remember a tip someone gave ages and ages ago that you should actually resize to 105 and crop down, but i never noticed a difference doing that. same with their other tip which was soften before resizing then sharpen after it's resized
