we're all cringe here

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Thank you so much anon!!! I'm real passionate about it cuz the community around it is super accepting and friendly and the brain boost from picking up heavy stuff is excellent.

I like working out but lifting intimidates me, ngl. Can I ask where you started with getting STRONK and what are the key practices you regard as keeping yourself from getting injured (which, speaking of, stay safe out there!!)

I also started out just doing cardio and lightweights. I'm not sure exactly when it happened but I met a couple of people at the gym who were very encouraging and once I started to get newbie gains it really boosted my confidence and then I was very deep in it before I realised. I'm a bit numbers driven and competitive so comparing myself to myself helps me keep motivated. I have never thought of myself as an athlete and lost a lot of love for sport in high school but I found my niche!

I won't lie, risk of injury is pretty high! Key points for me are:
Work with a trainer to begin with, in person form checking is invaluable!!
Record a couple of sets and check your form.
Learn what cues you need to look out for to make sure your form is right. Breathing and bracing is huge.
Warm up slowly and treat every weight like your heaviest weight.
I'm also a big supporter of doing yoga or deep stretching regularly which also helps things like flexibility which helps me squat deeper.

As a powerlifter I use a lot of equipment like a lifting belt, knee sleeves and straps and these things help protect my joints and my back.

I've only had a couple of "injuries" and it's mostly been wear and tear more than something big and dramatic. Things like sprains and pulling muscles from overtraining or getting a bit complacent. I've also failed lifts a few times and the first time is scary (especially failing bench press but especially failing squats) but you learn how to dump a weight pretty quick.

Sorry for the tl;dr but I am so so passionate about lifting. It is really intimidating but it has done so much for my confidence and my happiness! Strength is really important and very useful.

Not OP or AYRT, but starting with getting strong is really starting with the basics. If you don't have the funds for a gym or a personal trainer to get you started, buy a set of dumbbells personal to your strength. I recommend starting with 3 sets, a 'light' set relative to your strength, a 'medium' set, and a 'heavy' set. You can easily build muscle and strength at home with some strong programming, and before long, you'll experience newbie gains and outgrow those initial weights in the speed of light.

Youtube does have a wealth of programmed fitness from great personal trainers for free. You have to know who to follow, though. Not all youtube fitness professionals are equally good. Subreddit r/xxfitness can help you find the good ones if you're interested.

coming in late to recommend that you go and have a couple of sessions with a trainer in a gym to learn proper form. you don't have to keep going but it's so much easier and safer to learn from someone in person than trying to do it yourself from videos or guides. if you keep going with the exercise it's also good to occasionally have a trainer session to "top up" your learning or get some feedback on your form from a qualified person.
