but my main character syndrome

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Someone just did the metrics for the last 4 days of bakerstreet memes. It's a ratio of 13 gen to 17 smut. There are a number of gen options, even if it's not a genuine 50:50.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

every time this topic has come up someone's done the math on the available memes and it always comes out close to 50:50 and occasionally in favor of gen memes

the post popular memes (texting/midnight texting and tfln) are gen memes, while other gen memes are sitting there with barely 50 comments (just like some of the shipping memes)

anyone who claims bakerstreet is "oversaturated" isn't actually looking at reality

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not close to 50/50, that's a 24/76 ratio like hello are you looking at reality

objective reality IS there are more shipping memes

it's not as dramatic as people think, but people have a legitimate basis to feel "oversaturated" by it. because there is mathematically more.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
the sample size is way too small for you to manipulate the statistics like that

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The leaps you can make from an n of 1

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"There are more" =/= oversaturation.

There are a number of gen options and they're heavily used. If the problem is "there are no gen options that I want to play then that's a different problem.

mandatory "i love smut" disclosure here but

i do understand why someone might feel overwhelmed by having 3 iterations of the "come tell me my character is fuckable" meme a week. and maybe that would motivate them to want their own community.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm so fucking confused how you got to 24/76 from 13/17

(Anonymous) 2023-01-06 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
mte I need to know omg

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not 50/50, but it is 43/57, which is practically the same and nowhere close to the 24/76 you just listed, so if you feel the need to lie to justify your logic (or are just very, VERY bad at math) you may need to re-evaluate yourself

I can understand the point that if the numbers are almost always in favor or the shipping/smut variety, and only occasionally in favor of gen (as aother anon mentioned), then the overall feel of the comm is more like 35/65 than 43/57.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
this is like trying to assess the demographics of your home town by glancing out the window.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
13 + 17 = 30

13/30 = .43 (or 43%)

17/30 = .57 (or 57%)

That's a hell of a lot closer to 50/50 than it is 24/76. Where the fuck did you even get 24/76 from?

Here's the metrics in question for anyone else that's curious: https://wankgate.dreamwidth.org/64596.html?thread=257426772#cmt257426772

What I found most interesting was how the average number of comments compare. Counting gen memes comes out on top, and with the outliers like TFLN removed they only just barely lag behind the smut memes.

If it wouldn't be a huge pain in the ass I'd love to see a full breakdown of the stats over the course of a month or two.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
To quote this because I know some people refuse to touch wankgate or even have it blocked:

I got very bored waiting for my car repairs to finish and decided to do a quick count of the Bakerstreet front page.

tl;dr: gen memes usually outpace smut memes. At worst they get a whopping ~10 fewer comments per meme on average.

Actual numbers:
• 14 gen and mixed-use memes, 3654 total comments, average of 261 comments per meme. (average of 109 comments without TFLN)
• 15 smut and shipping memes, 2972 total comments, average of 198 comments per meme. (average of 120 comments without the fortanon Hit That meme.)
• 2 edge cases (dancing and touch) with 120 total comments. Added to the shipping total, that brings the average comments-per-meme down to 181 (or 128 if Hit That isn't counted).

I do hope the new meme comm survives if only because it'll almost certainly be better moderated than BS. But I think the real solution here is for gen purists to unclench and tag out.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Wonder if bad at math anon will try to argue against this

(Anonymous) 2023-01-05 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
hopping over from wankgate to point out that gen memes tend to come in clustered waves and if you look at an entire month (say December 2022, the last complete month) it drops to 24% gen memes and 76% shipping and smut memes

less than a quarter of the memes are suitable for gen players and those memes came in clusters that quickly got pushed down the page which can get hidden if you just happen to check the front page in the middle of one of those clusters.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-07 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
tbf most of the december shipping memes are probably just the Mistletoe meme over and over again

(Not complaining, it's one of the most popular memes and only really gets posted in December, just saying it's not really a "normal" month)

(Anonymous) 2023-01-07 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"most of bakerstreet in december is endless iterations of the same shippy scenario"

sounds like exactly a normal month to me

(Anonymous) 2023-01-07 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
jesus why are you still complaining, you have a whole gen meme comm now. go there and leave the rest of us to have fun without you

Da

(Anonymous) 2023-01-07 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i am not really having fun with endless samey memes either

Re: Da

(Anonymous) 2023-01-07 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
