Rundown: rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. plenty of people don't use plurk or discord and somehow do just fine in this community, anon. idk what to tell you

they can just go on bakerstreet and use dreamwith PMs (crazy idea I know)

if someone isn't capable of using a basic search function or figuring out how to find a game without having a plurk or discord (as many people already have done) then they're probably too stupid to be in this hobby anyway

very nice smug fart-huffing attitude, but it's not that it's "too hard," it's that it's inconvenient when there are more convenient alternatives that already exist outside of dwrp. people aren't "too stupid" if they decide they can get what they're looking for with less effort elsewhere.

Not everyone knows to use plurk search or dw search to find games? When I joined this hobby I found my first games using one of the master list pages. Hardly any private/invite only games are on there.

If someone is new to DW and doesn't have a plurk (yet), they literally have no idea they can search there and wouldn't even know what to search for to avoid having to sift through a lot of irrelevant results to hopefully find a game. Secondly, if I saw something was private or invite-only and I was brand new I might assume I couldn't get in anyway without anyone to vouch for me. A lot of invite-only games require you to list a plurk just to get an invite. It's just not a good system and unnecessarily convoluted and unwelcoming to new blood.

ok, but beyond complaining about the demerits of private/invite-only games, what's the constructive solution here?

private/invite-only solution are an answer people are implementing to be able to continue modding in what they consider a mod-friendlier, less dramatic or more protected environment.

you're talking about the abstract future of dwrp and long-term retention. i get it. i'm not saying you're unreasonable. but we have a bigger short-term problem where we won't have games at all, if we turn our back on private/invite-only options, because we've alienated mods from public modding.

what can we do, tell the few mods around to toughen up, boot strap and mod the kind of games they don't want to mod (public ones) for the good of players they don't know and might never meet? it's really not going to incentivize anyone.

the real solution here is to stop making this such hostile environment for mods and newbies which would mean nuking or drastically altering the anonymous venting communities because we don't know how to be nice and don't know how to be constructive with our criticism and chill if a mod or player wants to do something outside "the norm"

but that's never going to happen.

so the next best solution is more private games--that at least mitigates the hostile modding environment problem. sucks newbie accessibility suffers, but we can't go two for two unless we fix the root problem here.

there will ALWAYS be public games. there will ALWAYS be public memes. it's not like those are going anywhere either.

this, exactly. and this stuff is cyclical. i'm going to show my age here, but there were a lot of invite-only/private games back in the days of livejournal yore, preceding the blow-up of games like cfud, paradisa, poly and amat. once the ooc atmosphere changes and players chill out again, mods will feel comfortable making public games once more.

why can't there be middle ground, games that are private/invite only/capped but make at least a little effort to be on the community's radar? not every game has to but if all of them turn hush-hush no one ever talk about them we don't exist, then at some point I can see ayrt's scenario happening. the problem is, who has to make the effort, here? game mods willing to advertise? players willing to publicly say they're in this cool game you don't know about? game-searching players on EMP begging for invites? idk but there has to be some combination of all of the above to keep fresh blood flowing.

the point you're missing is that they're not hush-hush don't talk about it, you're just not friends with anyone opening a game

this problem is solved by being active in the community, actually rping, and making friends instead of expecting everything to be served directly to you on a plate

we can start expecting better behavior from public game players and encourage public game mods to remove or reject people who make modding unpleasant just like private games would.

the only reason public game mods have to put up with more BS is because they think that's the behavior that's expected of them, and that's something we can change. going private/invite-only makes it easier to establish those standards, sure, but we can and should accept that public game mods are not customer service drones.

sure, but until such a time that the player base at large shows significant signs of improvement, which will be a long-term process, can you blame mods for going private/invite-only?

there seems to be this entitled backlash of 'but how come these games aren't available to me, personally, they're oppressing me, me, me' and people seem immune to the idea that private game mods are taking the precautionary step of protecting themselves. you surely cannot expect these mods, who are already giving time and energy, to trade what they've decided is their peace of mind for a rando's convenience.

it's frankly really telling that we have whiners in this thread who are more concerned with getting theirs than with mods, who are contributing something to the rp sphere by putting out ideas, settings, events and admin. let's prove we're sane enough to deserve more public games first, whine after.

You get a lot of the benefits of a private game by having a low player cap, being selective with apps, and locking mod discussion posts. Wankgate largely ignores small games even when they're wanky. I've seen new games do brainstorming posts where people talk about what they'd like to do with their characters in-game, so maybe that could give mods an idea of which characters/players are suitable.

It's not just newbies who are getting excluded by the shift towards private games - a lot of longtime DWRPers who are active, drama-free, and good writers don't use Plurk or only use it to follow a handful of close friends. Those people will continue to drift away from DWRP if the only public games are a handful of big generic jamjars. These days, even public games do most of their advertising and TDM promotion via Plurk, so people who only check EMP or the game directory never hear about new games. No wonder so many games are dead on arrival. I think our over-reliance on Plurk strangles the hobby almost as much as Wankgate does.

I don't use Plurk because it's inaccessible (in the disability sense): The layout is a fucking nightmare as a visually impaired person, and don't get me started on how tiny all the emoticons and such are.

It's awesome that so much of DWRP has no problem with basically a 'only fully sighted people need apply' sign in a writing hobby.

from one visually impaired person to another: zoom in on your browser. changing your layout also changes the size and font of your text. plurk is easily customizable, you just have to look at the options. you can also use mobile for the bare minimum if you can't find the right layout for you.

if all else fails, approach the mods of the game you want to be in and see if they're willing to send you an invite. go to emp, go to bakerstreet. pm people you like rping with. use discord, it's highly customizable too.

idk why multiple anons in this thread are acting like we're not getting new people. we're getting plenty of new people. i've met three new players recently from outside of dreamwidth and none of them seem to be having a problem working out how things go around here

this is lots of hand wringing and concern about something that nobody seems to consider a problem besides a few anons who are salty about not being invited to every single game so they can flake out on the ac somewhere new
