Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.

most people aren't going to read it, mods don't want to read it either, so make bullet points

This is just a budding idea but would anyone be interested in a modern post-apocalyptic game? Characters are dropped into a world that is like Earth but suffering from a post-apocalyptic event.

- Characters are dropped into one of two points, the settlement that is building itself up to survive or out in the wilderness where they have to make it to the settlement.
- Temporary power loss with regains from AC or completing tasks or time spent in the game
- Gaining back canon powers can be used in any way the characters wish with powernerfing as needed for big powerful characters or abilities to keep balance.
- Events would take inspiration from various media tropes like zombie attacks, virus attacks, volatile gangs, thieves and looters, plants going hostile, body doubles, etc.
- Focus on slice of life/CR inside of a post-apocalyptic setting
- Building up the main settlement into a functioning protected town and creating an economy of sorts to give people the chance to create their own locations inside of it

Any other thoughts?

People are being vague because we're trying not to call anyone out specifically. Blues Clues gets used because there aren't any Steve players to take the comment too seriously and have legitimate hurt feelings.

1. longest over 5 years. shortest, didn't even intro post oops.
2. longest, endgame. shortest, RL emergency that couldn't be foreseen when apping
3. nope
4. a bit. I used to be able to spend 6mo-year(s) in a game before deciding it wasn't a good fit, but I was also more prone to dropping and game-shopping at that time. as time went on I was able to ride every game until endgame, satisfyingly. until the last 2 years, now I can't manage 3 months before dropping.
5. from start, no. but I've ridden at least 5 games to endgame with 1-2 years minimum time in game.

i've never felt this pressure to thread with absolutely everyone in my cast every single month. i mean, any canon likely to attract this large of a cast is likely to be a big sprawling setting that doesn't have everyone interacting or liking each other in canon.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-18 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't see how it's different from a dozen other games we've had, with varying but mostly low levels of success. resource building has been done in dwrp before and doesn't tend to be super interesting.

blues clues is a troll red herring intended to piss off anons, because almost no one plays from literal toddler shows. dragon maid at least belongs to a genre of tropey shit that people play from.

+1

anyone who thinks the dragon maid show is anything like blues clues clearly hasn't actually googled the dragon maid show and all the gratuitous sex jokes and titty shots

Anon, your reading comprehension...

Well, shit, how have I not run into you before, anon? Because I absolutely love all of these things together.

and with big casts, it's usually from a big, sprawling canon like star wars or mcu or one piece or genshin, where you can have characters who wouldn't necessarily have any real ic reason to interact much despite being from the same canon.

like, i play from a canon with a huge cast and there's a good portion of the cast my character wouldn't go out of their way to interact with because they never really do in canon, so even if we were to get those characters in my game, my character wouldn't have any special interest in interacting with them because he barely even knows who they are.

i mean i've seen plenty of my little ponies around over the years and that's definitely aimed at pretty young kids

(Anonymous) 2023-01-18 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? MLP is for four year olds. If you only play from canons designed for people who are just putting paw patrol away, it's the group that is getting talked about.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-18 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
that lack of specificity is also a sneaky tactic to avoid clarifying things

for example, Disney Animated always has some represented canon, do you think less of people who play from it?

(yes)

is it actually any less dynamic and emotionally layered/complex than whatever "adult" media you're so fond of?

(probably not)

(Anonymous) 2023-01-18 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
TLOU TV show would probably invigorate people to be interested in this kind of game if you're fast enough to ride the hype

1. Longest is roughly 5 years, shortest is a week.
2. Longest: I'd done everything I wanted to accomplish and when the last of his long-term CR dropped, I didn't have the energy to work him through losing them. Shortest: The game closed :(
3. Longest: Yes, but not for long as the game was winding down anyway. Shortest: No, game was closed.
4. It's changed, but not in the direction I've wanted. I really prefer to be in games long-term writing a full character arc, and I'm really sick of starting up in new games just to have them close or explode or whatever. I was in five games in 2022 and most of them are closed. Exhausting. I'd be in it for the long haul if they were open!
5. I've been in games from start to close, but never with a single character.

The only way I'd do post-apoc is:

- no powers, as there's no point to a survival story when characters can magic buildings and fortifications and food supply into existence
- a player base that sticks to theme. "SOL" makes me cagey. it's one thing if everyone is committed to telling survival stories, but I just don't want to be writing a character committed to survival and resource management while other characters are throwing regular-world birthday parties.
- internal logic. I'd rather be in a game that is a committed zombie game than a game that is a zombie game this month and an evil magic plants game the next and a vampire game after that and then an alien invasion game, etc. This also makes it easier to write an ongoing plot to keep things juicy.

Bullet points anon above is a solid rec. If the app standard for any given game turns out to be more prose-y, starting with bullet points should keep you from getting too granular.

I've also had a lot of luck with including a "Sparknotes Version" at the top of my history/background sections on OC apps—three to five sentences that gives the absolute broadest strokes, and then following that with the big tl;dr version.

eg. "The short version is, Hubert is an orphan who expected to toil away as a blacksmith's apprentice for his whole life. But when he makes a good impression on an eccentric roving knight, he instead finds himself swept up into the life of an adventurer's valet. Unfortunately, the idyllic life as a roving sidekick comes to an unceremonious end when his master is eaten by a dragon. Rather than return to his hum drum life, Hubert instead decides to commit identity theft and takes on the title of his former master.

The long version is, [insert your full history writeup here.]"

the only way to make this pitch unique is to really lean into the survival themes imo. i've seen a lot of games start out as survival/resource building and three months in, the playerbase is magicking in a mcdonalds and all of their characters' fully furnished estates from canon

I can't speak for the rest of DWRP, but honestly this sounds like what I've really been looking for and can't find at the moment, so I'd jump on it. Even if it has been done before, as someone said below, I don't think it's really being done now, so it would still fill a niche. I also agree with the other anon about seeing if you can ride the momentum of the TLOU show to get it off the ground.

I can see people being iffy about power loss no matter how you address it, since that seems to be a condition I see a lot of people listing as a dealbreaker on EMP. But since they will be nerfed as necessary for balance anyway, I might avoid the regain mechanic (those seem less popular these days from what I've seen, though I could be wrong) and go all-or-nothing with them. Either everyone keeps their powers to the extent that you can still have a meaningful survival game, or everyone loses them for good. People who dislike power loss in any form are probably not going to be your target audience anyway, and people who want the grittiness of a survival game might prefer the game be a bit more hardline about it.

But I have played in a game that's done good survival horror with a cast that happened to be mostly superhero/comic canons, and it still managed to be quite fun and challenging by having the mods take nerfing event-by-event, and design monsters to be impervious to some powers but weak to others and still escapable or killable when necessary by characters who didn't have powers at all. Neither of my characters did, and I rarely felt like I was being shut out of plot or rendered useless in comparison to all the superheroes. So I know it can be done. I'm sorry for the rambling, I'm just excited by the idea of this game and hope it becomes a thing.

this sounds like a great game that i would at least tdm for but then again the last time a game like this sounded cool to me it was cdc

resource building is something that works fine in sim games but is boring af in rp.
