looking down on shitty headcanons that make zero sense =/= purity police

to this day i have never seen a "good faith effort" of a trans headcanon that isn't gross fetishizing and i don't expect that to change anytime soon, never mind how people still use autistic slurs like it's the funniest thing ever so i don't trust anyone to handle that respectfully either

it's really telling what the priorities are for these people when there are hardly any canon (or even OC) trans or autistic characters being played on dwrp, even though there are plenty of both to choose from in a wide variety of media

if you're so desperate to pick up this sort of canon character, ask for recommendations to find one that suits you and play them

the excuse i usually see is that canon trans or autistic characters are often written in an offensive way, which isn't necessarily false, but instead of trying to pick them up and attempt a meaningful arc with them they just slap labels on characters it doesn't even make sense for.

like, if you're talking over actual autistic and trans people telling you this is a bad idea? sorry, but you are definitely the asshole here.

the irony of it is how these headcanons often end up just as if not more offensive than anything I've ever seen in actual canon. they usually don't bother thinking about how being trans or neuroatypical would impact a character from the ground up and just have them obsess over dysphoria or stimming like that's the be all and end all of those experiences.

what i find it a bit difficult to wrap my head around is this attitude of, "if you don't think about this MY way, clearly you're not doing right," towards people who may themselves also be trans or autistic. i can think of plenty of reasons why people would rather work with a character that isn't presented in canon as a caricature of an identity that is important to them, as opposed to rehabilitating the caricature.

slapping top surgery scars on Tony Stark because he's your comfort character isn't "working" with anything, anon

plenty of trans and autistic people also have legitimate problems with these headcanons and are almost always shouted down by people like you every time we point out that we're uncomfortable

at the end of the day there are plenty of places where those headcanons are not only acceptable but welcomed. DWRP is one of the few fandom communities where they're not. if you absolutely must use those headcanons, go elsewhere

okay, but why are we pretending that this is THE ONLY WAY trans headcanons are rped, or that i was SPECIFICALLY referring to this particular way of rping a trans headcanon? i completely agree that this is a weird thing to do and an unacceptable thing to just spring on someone. but this is also just plain ass shitty rping and communication. i'm not going to repeat myself again, but just asking for your rp partner's consent before you factor in a trans headcanon, inclusive of walking them through what that headcanon involves and what its justification is given their characterization in the canon, REALLY does not seem like the same thing you're describing.

because, in the experience of practically everyone you're arguing with in this thread, it IS the only way we've seen trans headcanons RPed. it's also the only way they get written in fic and drawn in fanart, so it's a big problem for some of us who have to constantly deal with it in our fandom spaces

and what if your RP partner doesn't want to sit there and listen to that shit unprompted just because you want to play it? if they wanted to RP with a trans headcanon they would have sought it out

again: if it means so much to you then go do it on tumblr or twitter or insanejournal or the other places which don't care. or try and do it here but stick to memes and psls. but op asked what the opinions of it are here on rpa and they got the honest answers of: we don't like it, take it somewhere else. sorry if that's not clear enough but it's the truth

+1 a lot of us here are older (or at least older than many tumblr rpers), and we've developed this distaste because we've rped off trans headcanons and found them to be fetishy at best. imo it's worse than self-inserting and using rp as therapy, because on top of being weird it's offensively stupid. i haven't run into it much in dwrp, but on tumblr i used to give people the benefit of the doubt with this, and ran into a lot of people who really didn't want to rp trans characters so much as they wanted to rp really nasty smut that made so little sense it was impossible to read with a straight face. the trans headcanon description was just because they wanted to both work in some easy hurt/comfort and sound like they were above what was basically hentai porn.

(note that i'm not saying you can't want to rp hentai porn, but don't pretend you're some kind of amazing ally by doing it.)

that does not change the fact doing it at all is inherently weird and fetishy when tony stark is canonically not trans

to date i have not encountered a single trans headcanon in play that was NOT fetishy/offensive in at least one way

or completely misconstrued the issue with certain characters that were the target for headcanons.
