how do you deal with playing a "punching bag" character without coming across like you're burring ic/ooc?

i'm told i'm a very good [x] who is an intelligent but comic relief kind of character, that i'm a good writer, have good characterization, etc. i'm very flattered, but it feels like other players really like using my character as a prop? or they hone in much more on the "comic relief" hooks and ignore the "they are also actually very intelligent and can be useful in the event in this and that way" kinds of hooks. it gets really frustrating and then i get frustrated at myself because i can't think of any way to frame this problem without appearing like i'm butthurt, or asking other players to write in a certain way.

Stop leaving comic relief hooks for a while and see if it still happens

i did this for one event and i got significantly less tags! one was established cr who i already made plans with and they were good about bouncing off mine in a multifaceted way, so no complaints there. the other two tags i got the other player got weird in meta text about how they didn't think my character was capable of [smart thing hook] and mentioned it three times in three separate tags, idk if that character was supposed to be arrogant but the repetitiveness of it i found off-putting, and the other was really quick to gloss over my hook and move the scene directions that were clearly angling to make my character comic relief. i did drop that thread once i felt like they were steering the thread in that certain way.

but i only tried this once so i don't know if it was just a run of bad luck/not good cr chemistry, my [smart hook] not actually being good, or those two particular players being weird, or what.

fandom in general but dwrpers frequently have a problem focusing only one one key trait of a character, ignoring all the rest. that part is nothing new, you see it in fic or in fanon trends all the time.

icly you can try using the comic relief trait as flavoring in tags rather than prompts in toplevels, to show there's still that side but it's something that happens in the middle of other things, not something to use as a plot point. idk if you'll still get sparse threads or dropped threads if people are fixated on haha funny guy and lose interest as soon as he's not being haha funny, but at least it's something to assure that yes he's still haha funny guy, really, just yknow while we're fighting this monster or plotting a revolution too.

oocly you can always politely word it in a CR meme post, if your game has CR memes. don't accuse other players but just say you'd like to explore more of this side of his personality, if anyone has ideas for that. that puts it out there so you can always point to it if someone has trouble reading.

not to play detective but it feels like Sokka from Avatar and holy shit yeah, I get it. Even in canon he complains about being pigeonholed into a personality type; fans fixate on his witty quips and goofyness and completely ignore his hardcore warrior instincts and competence as shown in season 3. It's a rough road to ride but if you stick to your guns and balance things out well, people looking for a well-rounded portrayal of the character will notice and start to gravitate toward you. You may still end up with fewer tags but they might overall be better than a slew of meh tags from people obsessed with haha funny guy.

the character is very like sokka, like, wow that's a really close comparison i never thought of, haha. you definitely hit on all what i was feeling frustrated about the most. and this is really good advice, thank you! even if i get fewer tags i'd rather it make for more substantial, well-rounded cr.

if i love writing haha funny guy and making people laugh but there's way more to them that's interesting that i also want to write about.
