I wish I could figure out a decent alias name. The internet is more fun when you're anonymous for the most part. Never understood how people can openly post photos of themselves and go by their real names lol what's the point in that

Anyway, if you go by an alias, how did you come up with yours?

think of something you like. look at your friend group/game mates to make sure you're not coming up with the third 'kit/kat/jen'. if you like fairy tales, maybe myth or grimm or fable or something. it doesn't have to be a 'name' so much as just something that's "you", if you get my drift. like the egyptian pantheon? bast or anubis or horus. like food? cookie or tea or churro. we have people (and this isn't to degrade or be negative, just to point out) named chips, noodle, toast, batty, cloud, tree. pick something that you like. ocean, river, puffy, marshmallow, pink, purple, aqua, bead, fringe, ember, voldy. pick a character you really like that you don't play (i'd suggest one you do like and play, but then someone can try to claim 'soulbonder', so the opposite is best.)

make a list, then go through what you like best. pick your favorite time period, geographic location, whatever. i'd think narrowing it down to just one is the harder part.

i found a fantasy name generator online, hit the refresh button until i found a simple two-syllable name i liked, and picked that. afaik it's a unique handle and i haven't had to say "no, i'm not THAT one" to anybody. and i like it because i don't actually like my real name lmao

It's the fandom accepted maiden name of a character.

I went through a couple aliases over years. The first one was the name of a Zelda character I liked, the second one was the name of my favorite actor at the time.

I go by a shortened form of my chosen name on plurk that only a handful of irls know.

But for my aliases (I use a couple different ones in the gaming scene than general RP) I chose them with a mix of fandom, past nicknames, pun on the region I live in, or names of pets I've had

it was a reference to my username on an off-DW website about eight or so years ago that i just ended up sticking with ever since

It was an injoke that got smushed because the full thing was taken on most websites.

it’s something that was shortened from a username i used to use. people just started calling me that, i didn’t dislike it either, so i stuck with it.

esl here and i love that in english you guys call each other by initials, it's super cool. so i use that. it's practical, still anonymous, it's not from a fandom i may end up hating later and i don't have to think too hard.

A million years ago I made my first neopets account and named it after my dog. When I started going on the message boards people naturally called me by that name and I just carried it with me across sites. By now I’m so used to it that it’s basically just a second name to me.

If I hadn’t gone by that I would have just gone by a real name I liked. That’s really all that matters, is if you like it. Though it is weird to me when people want to go by darkangel or doomtoast or something.

as a child we made up codenames for our 'secret club' and ive used it everywhere since i was 9

I use an alias for my kink art and commissions. I chose my favorite name.

my longest one i still use for non-rp stuff came off an rp character's nickname. the one i actually use for rp stuff is just a name i really like.

Not so much an intentional alias as an unusual nickname based on my hobbies and interests. It's just been around for me since before the internet was a thing in my life. So that was how I introduced myself to people and it stayed with me for 20+ years.

username that got cut down, decided to stick with it.

one of the more unfortunate situations i saw was when someone played a character, then decided to go by their character's name, which was a pretty normal real world name. time passed, people forgot their first handle, everyone just assumed they were a person named [name], who played a character named [name], and it was just a wacky coincidence instead of soulbonding. i never had the heart to say no, actually, it is soulbonding.

Its from 12 year old me's Naruto self insert. A Japanese name that's been shortened and now I use it more than my real name

I made a typo in 2001 and liked the look of it and have used it as my main fandom/rp handle ever since. I like that it's unique and unconnected to anything about my real life. It makes it easy for people to find me, but allows me control over what details about my life I share.

it was a pun based off a gacha game I was playing at the time. I used it as a discord handle for a while and then decided to use it as my actual handle after i got sick of the canon associated with my previous one.

and no it's not any of the gachas you're thinking of

it's a very shortened form of a character's nickname from an old, old fandom I never bothered to change

mine came from an oc i had when i was a kid.

I keysmashed in a few consonants and added vowels til it sounded like something.

had a few fandom-related handles over the years that were essentially RP username puns, but the one that stuck is one I was given at random by a generator during an event and I liked it.

between twitter, tumblr, and plurk, it's obvious people still make up usernames based on fandom, interests, etc and if it doesn't stick they can change their display name to reflect that. eventually a shortened form of it becomes an easy shorthand nickname and voila, a handle is born.

Named myself after a favorite drag queen.

had to figure out a username for AIM and keysmashed until I got something I liked, then people naturally shortened it when talking to me so I just stuck with it since then.
