1. Because we don't get a lot of new players, people are typically very curious about the newcomer and sweep them right in. Adding people on plurk really helps, as most plotting takes place over there. That said, as you noted TLV is an older game and most of the players have been there for 5+ years, some 10+, even if their characters are newer. That long shared history can sometimes be a little alienating to new players. I wouldn't say it's cliquey, as you can get CR with pretty much anyone if you seek it out, but it's definitely a tight-knit community.

2. Our recent crop of inmates include a cannibal, a bomb maker (who has already blown someone's hands off), and a vampire who wants to farm humans, so darker or more intense characters won't be a problem in concept. People are interested in conflict here, and playing an inmate who will instigate/cause trouble would probably get a lot of traction really fast. That said, we don't have a lot of hard-ass wardens at the moment, so you're likely have wardens try to love-and-acceptance your character to redemption. If that works for your inmate: great! You'll have a ton of options. If you're looking for them to be challenged more, it might just take longer to pair/play out that redemption arc.

And as you can probably see, our spread of taken characters now tends towards obscure canons but not any particular genre. We definitely have very few comedy/lighthearted canons, though. Our events recently have been a little slice of life (though not cracky) but I suspect that's because of mod hiatuses.
