Wow, you guys are still here. I have an etiquette question!

I haven’t been in a game since the Before Times and quietly faded out of RP. My old main game is still trucking on with many the same players and I’d like to go back. I was a long-term player and left on good terms, but DWRPers have long memories.

This time, I want both a fresh start and the ability to leave and quietly be forgotten if it doesn’t work out. How weird would it be if I came back with a new handle and didn’t bring up that I’d been in the game before? What other alternatives are there?

it's your life and your game experience etc but personally i'd see that as a) weird and b) dishonest. if you want a new handle use a new handle, but it'd be bizarre not to mention at least offhandedly that you'd been in the game. otherwise it'd just be a lie of omission the mods probably wouldn't be too crazy about either.

and if anyone finds out that you were already in the game under a different alias, it's going to look pretty damning. if i were in that game and i ended up befriending you only to learn that you were in the game before and just failed to bring that up, i wouldn't want to be your friend after that, because you'd effectively be building off of a bedrock that was never truly genuine. you'd be jeopardizing all of the relationships you built after getting into the game.

i don't want to be friends with people who lie, simple as that. if you lie about that, how could i trust you not to be lying about anything else? i would assume that there was a reason you were hiding the fact that you'd been in the game before and like this anon says, that seems pretty sketch.

uh i don't think it's as dramatic as other anon thinks. you can mention you did dwrp a long time ago if you want or just not bring it up at all and that's fine. it would only look sketchy if you claimed to be completely new imo.

it's not that dramatic. you don't have to bring up your time in dwrp. just look around here, there are always people talking about how they're coming back after years away.

people change their handles all the time. the only other thing i'd add to the sketchy pile would be outright lying if someone asks if you're you.

Just be honest that you’ve got more time to play now and want to be in a game again, and if you wanna go, just say “it turns out I don’t have the energy to keep up with a game, but thanks for your time!” Easy and polite. People do this often and it’s never a problem.

If you want a fresh start just go to another game or bring a new character into the current one.

I don't see anything wrong with coming back using different handle unless you're trying to bypass previous wank or trying to get on the good side of people you didn't get along with in the game.

That said, I don't think you need to change handles either. Even if people remembered you played before, they probably won't really care if you join then decide to drop.

I agree the key is not to be deceitful. I think not mentioning at all might end up weird, if someone you knew who liked you ends up interacting with you and works it out they might be hurt you didn't say anything or wonder why you hid it. They might assume bad faith-- that there's a bad reason you're hiding it all.

Essentially I don't think it's dramatic but it might end up making you look bad if people find out, and people you were on good terms with you might lose favour with for "hiding" the familiarity.

What about using the same handle stops you leaving or having a fresh start? You could just create a new plurk if its a plurk thing. Or not use one at all. Plenty of people rp without one.

I saw how sus that phrasing was when I read my comment back, but there’s no edit button on anon comments :( It’s actually pretty simple! I want to avoid setting expectations about being back in the long term, because when I was there I was very invested. It feels like it’ll hit different if it’s “me” leaving versus a rando who the game wasn’t a good fit for. It’s been long enough that it probably doesn’t matter and I’m overthinking it.

I do want a new handle either way. My old one was really just a placeholder that stuck and now that I’ve had time to think I’d like to be called something else.

you're probably overthinking it, and unless your old handle was a very specific thing (princess crystal-xyltique) versus something generic (amanda) nobody is immediately going to realize you were this person from four years ago or however long it was.

but a new handle is valid.

biggest advice is to not lie if anyone asks if you were princess crystal-xyltique and tell them what you told us, if it does come up. and if you have to drop, do what other people suggested.

I can't even think of what game is still open from anything that would be considered "the before times" and still has most of the same players unless it's Millways or TLV. And the majority of DWRP doesn't care about those, so do whatever you're gonna do.

If someone I was friends with years ago came back pretending to be someone else who didn't know me, but still tried to rp with me and chat, I'd feel kinda bad about it honestly.

People will be sad for a few minutes if you come back and have to leave again. That's it. You don't really need to overthink it so much.

There's no problem changing your handle, but please don't be deceitful to the people you used to know.

I’m great at overthinking things, unfortunately! I’ve been on the other side of other players going full witness protection program and wasn’t bothered by it, but those players were seeking fresh starts due to harassment rather than being in my situation.
