that feeling when your oc would probably work better with cr from some cast due to genre and similar experiences, but because it's an oc, the character gets more cr from other oc's from vastly different genres and experiences because all the oc's have to stay in their corner. said cross-genre cr is usually pretty great! ...but maybe you just want some sci-fi or horror flavored cr development and said cast players are being weird and lukewarm about it.

as someone who also plays an oc, i dislike the idea of "ocs must stay in their own corner" a whole hell of a lot. characters need more in common than just that to have chemistry, rapport, or anything else that makes a thread fun

feeling you on the canon players being weird and lukewarm about it tho, it sucks having to walk on eggshells and be overly tuned to the possibility of bad vibes

if you choose to play ocs in a writing hobby consisting of mostly canon characters, then it's your job to do the extra heavy-lifting of initiating OOC contact and pitching great scene ideas, making your oc interesting and accessible, and still being prepared for canon characters not to want cr with you (and also not wanting to be raked across the coals for saying so directly) because the players have had bad experiences with ocs in the past or just don't find your precious invention that engaging.

i don't even play ocs and this is stupid as fuck

they're literally no different from obscure canons that (general) you don't know anything about. when scrolling down the game comm or event post levels nobody would be able to tell the difference between an oc and a canon you don't know if it wasn't for the header

"sometimes people just don't find your character engaging deal with it" and "make your character accessible" is a rule everyone in rp should incorporate, not just ocs

I've had way more bad experiences with canon characters. This isn't bad advice for anyone (canon, obscure, oc, whatever) but it's coming with a shitty snippy attitude.

thank you for displaying exactly the kind of attitude that makes it so uncertain to reach out to a player who is part of a cast, and that makes it just slightly tougher to trust won't happen again the next time someone with an oc goes to all that extra heavy-lifting effort. most of us do this amount of extra work these days without complaint. outliers are roundly mocked, so why wouldn't we work extra hard to make our tags interesting and inviting?

for most of us, it's not about a precious invention, it's about wanting to write a dynamic and either we're not seeing a good fit in canon to use, or maybe we do but it's a rare canon around here so we wind up an lcw, or maybe we just like world building as part of our rp experience, but we like the quality of writing or the format of dwrp better than forums or tumblr or twitter.

when we have to infer that all our efforts are going to be quietly rejected because you're afraid that asserting your boundaries will make you a target, you're putting all the extra work on an oc or a lcw or whatever. you're allowed to say 'no' and not get raked. not all oc players are the same, and most of us appreciate knowing which of you had a traumatic experience with a mary sue and will be snippy with the rest of us.

idk where you got the assumption that i don't already know this, or that i think my oc shits rainbows and farts perfume so why oh why isn't everyone clamoring to lick their taint, but okay

it still sucks to get bad vibes off people for something that's not my fault, whether it's a bad past experience from a different player or our writing styles not meshing or any hundred other things

also an oc player and i have to say i totally understand that attitude. dwrp is really one of the few places people can go for canon rp - i can play my ocs in about two dozen other different places where ocs are the norm and you're looked down on for wanting to play canon characters, so i totally get why people want to have one space where it's 99% canon rp.

and that's totally fine and they're allowed to feel that way. it's not hurting me one bit if there's a place that doesn't want my ocs, because i'm already playing them elsewhere. personally, i'm not that interested in playing with ocs in dwrp even though i play mostly ocs on the whole. when i'm here, i want to play with canon characters, you know?
