Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

offshoot question -
i'm sex repulsed and haven't had any rl sexual experiences nor do i expect to. how do i learn to write smut? i feel like i'm pretty decent in the brief scenes i've written for fics but i'm afraid of being laughed out of the room if i try lmao

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

as an ace person (not sure if i'd say i'm sex repulsed, but definitely not a fan) my best recommendation is to read. not the trashy romance novel garbage, but actual literature that happens to include that sort of stuff.

unfortunately i can't think of anything exactly off the top of my head right now. :( maybe other anons can help? you could also look at the trashy romance stuff to get an idea of what will get you laughed at/what to avoid? fwiw i mean

"actual literature that happens to include that sort of stuff."

This is terrible advice tbh. Most literary sex scenes are dire. Well-written fic is going to get you a lot closer to what people in DWRP tend to want out of a sex scene.

just read fanfiction. i guarantee that almost everyone you'll smut with is pulling phrases and ideas from fic they've read.

lol i haven't read any fanfic in over 12 years. I do rp a lot of smut though.

I think anon's point is that there are plenty of sex scenes in the classics that are profoundly unsexy. Academically respected literature and actually hot smut don't intersect too much.

Honest question. If you're sex repulsed, what's even the draw to learn and write it?

Wondering this myself. Specifically being sex repulsed and wanting to write smut?

not the original anon, but another person who is irl ace & sex repulsed to a degree–

it's just for the fun, really! like any other scenario i vicariously enjoy through fiction but would not enjoy in real life, playing around with sex and smut in purely fictional terms lets me 'experience' or at least play at experiencing extreme emotions that i have zero interest in experiencing irl.

there's also the fact that in fiction you can pick and choose to an exacting degree what parts of sex you do and don't engage with. the parts of sex that you personally find gross/uncomfortable can just be tossed out or ignored and you can choose to engage soley with the parts you find interesting or appealing.

'sex repulsed' is also a bit of a spectrum! some people are repulsed by sex entirely as a concept and don't even like engaging with it in fiction. for me, my repulsion is just in regards to 'real' sex and fictional stuff doesn't trigger that same 'ugh' reaction.

obviously, this might be different for OP because everyone's different, but i just wanted to give my perspective too just in case they didn't respond lol

another smut writing(&drawing) sex repulsed ace here! personally I write/draw smut because it's an extension of shipping. i love a ship and i want to see them bang. the repulsion part is about myself, specifically, being involved in the sex lol

why are people always asking such a stupid question

people don't enjoy getting stabbed or kidnapped or punched in the face and you don't see questions like "if you don't like pain why do you want to learn to write action scenes???"

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

sex makes people stupid

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2021-05-08 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
because "repulsion" is a strong word. people who are repulsed by gore typically don't write guro scenes. people who are repulsed by scat typically don't write scat scenes.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2021-05-08 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
speak for yourself i love writing guro and pain, gore and violence

i just get way way less opportunities to do the former and don't expect it ever. i can easily expect to find someone who is fine with writing vanilla smut, or vanilla violence however.

This isn’t necessarily true, anon. Like, I think vomit is gross irl and even in film, but I enjoy emetophilia in written form and even in art form (as long as it’s not hyper realistic). People have different levels of tolerances for things in different mediums.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

I think there's some variation? For instance, I really don't like writing explicit guro, and I've felt horrible whenever I've tried it. But if I'm writing a dark action story, sometimes describing the effects or aftermath of battle helps me create an atmosphere of the horrors of war, to make an example. And even then, the description may be relatively general, leaving the reader to imagine stuff. But, just the same, avoid writing bodily functions that may be involved either because it doesn't serve my version of the story, or because I can't write it for shit (pardon the pun).

One of the most common tips I read regarding writing in general, not just sex, is that you're also supposed to love what you're writing and reading, so you can at least get some idea if whatever you're writing works or not. And as you've noted, repulsion may be a strong word, because there's finding something terrible but still being able to make art out of it, and then there's being unable to make art out of it entirely.

I wouldn't expect someone who is squeamish to be asking how they can write graphic violence and gore.

Sex repulsed implies they may not even enjoy the content they want to create, and it wouldn't be the first time someone has felt pressured to write smut because offering it can be an easier way of getting certain kinds of cr.

Honestly, it's not even really relevant to the question of how to write good smut, because it's not like having sex suddenly makes you a great smut writer, which is probably why anons were confused.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2021-05-08 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
op here - it's the visual of sex that repulses me, written is fine. as long as i don't have to look at it, yknow? just looks gross. and i want to write it even though it does nothing for me bc it's such an interesting part of characterization that i've not really had a chance to explore, especially when there's a plot element intertwined with it.

ayrt and that's fair!

hearing a partner is "repulsed" by sex but still wanted to write smut with me would have made me worried I made them feel like they had to in some way, so I appreciate the education and explanations a lot. thank you for your patience!

ignore the anon above re: avoiding the romance genre, it’s bad faith advice from someone who thinks romance isn’t “actual literature”

if you want to get better at writing those things, you SHOULD read romance. romance has a huge quality spectrum like every other genre does, but even its worst examples of sex scenes are generally above average compared to other genre because lovemaking and romance and sex are the central draw. if you wanted to learn to write mystery or horror better, you’d read mystery or horror books (regardless of quality) to figure out what you do or don’t like. It’s the same with romance. Figure out what interests you to write, what you find intriguing, what dynamics you find engaging. plenty of romance books are very light on sex because they focus more on the tension, the emotional highs/lows, the interpersonal conflicts and bonds that come out of love and lust.

and ultimately there is no one good or bad way to write smut, it’s all about figuring out what you find appealing or compelling and learning to communicate that.

"being asexual" and "finding romance/porn to be cringe" are probably not unrelated tbh.

Seconding that fanfic can be a great way to go since porn-with-plot is more common, and what you'd be looking for in terms of just wanting to learn to write smut.

But also, read the threads of players you consider to be good writers. I had no idea how to write good smut at first, and then I joined a sex game and was able to follow the lead of other players. Out of everything, I'd say this helped me the most, especially since it makes sure you know how dwrp prefers to write.
