How the fuck do I get into this canon? I've wanted to for ages and have NO idea where I'm starting.

it kind of depends on what you're interested in, imo!

if you want to delve into the franchise as a whole, i'd recommend reading the vn or watching the unlimited blade works -> heaven's feel -> fate/zero anime adaptions (you could watch zero -> ubw -> hf, but that'll spoil some big reveals, if that matters to you) and then picking at the various spin-offs as you please, but if you're not interested in the main series, you could also jump right into whichever bit that's calling to you.

So which are considered main series? The VN, Unlimited Blade Works, Heaven's Feel, Fate/Zero anime? Are the VN and the anime all canon?

the main series would be either the VN or its anime (unlimited blade works and heaven's feel)!

the VN is structured in such a way that it tells three very different stories (fate, unlimited blade works, and heaven's feel, in that order) that all have the same basic premise, and each route builds on the one that came before it. unlimited blade works is just as canon as heaven's feel (and the first route of the VN, "fate", is just as canon as both of them, despite not having a proper adaption).

hopefully this doesn't sound too confusing, but it's something that makes more sense in practice, i think.

the unlimited blade works and heaven's feel anime are pretty true to the VN (most changes are minor, like narration being cut, or the ending of heaven's feel being a bit longer than it was in the VN) and cover all of the same events, so if you don't like reading VNs or don't want to sit through one as long as fate/stay night, it's just as canon and basically just as viable.

fate/zero is a prequel to fate/stay night (though its anime adaption came first and is a super popular jumping-in point, as far as i'm aware), and has no branching routes or anything like that; it's just one straight-forward, self-contained story, and its events are canon in every route of fate/stay night.

Adding a small caveat that in the unlikely event they want to pick up taiga, illya, or one of the minor characters, going through the vn might be a good idea since they get more screen time. The ufotable adaptations are pretty good but it's an 80 hour vn so stuff had to be cut here and there.

You should still read the VN if you're planning to app the main heroines. And it's absolutely necessary in Saber's case as Fate route has a lot of critical information that was never covered in any other adaptation (the initial FSN anime doesn't count since it's a shitty mishmash).

No it's not. You can play Saber from Zero and spare yourself headache of multiple routes. VN is a good source but let's not gatekeep by insisting it's the only source.

It's not the only source. But it's an important source and you shouldn't skip it. Zero alone doesn't cover her whole backstory, and in Saber's case, it's pretty damn critical. I'd argue the same is true for Rin. So yes, in my opinion, you should read the VN if you're picking her up.

But I'm also not dying on this hill and getting into a 9000 comment argument, so that's the last I'll say on that. Agree to disagree.

Would rec garden of avalon if they don't want to go through fate route since it's saber's backstory: the cd. Not as complete as the GoA novel, but it'd help.

the issue with playing saber from zero only is that saber had to deal with kiritsugu and she ends up only suffering and showing a few aspects of her personality

you sometimes see the Fate route Saber in zero when Saber’s with Iri, but Iri’s prioritization of Kiritsugu throws that under the bus

While I don't disagree that people should at least give the vn a look, I'm not willing to die on this hill since it obviously doesn't stop people from playing them.

First: Fate is fucking huge and half of it isn't available outside of Japan, so don't feel bad if you don't see everything. Most people don't.

Second: There is a lot of disagreements in this fandom over what is the best starting point and what is absolutely needed to see/play. Everyone has a different answer here. My answer is going to be "what is the best way to get into the canon based on what is easily available in English?" Because the best starting point in general (the original visual novel) has not been officially translated and can be a bit of a pain to get ahold of.

With that in mind, the best starting point is Fate/Unlimited Blade Works and Fate/Zero. Zero is a prequel to UBW, but you can watch them in either order. I personally watched Zero and then UBW and it worked. Both are easily available in multiple formats, and they're old enough that I think you can watch them for free on several streaming sites if you don't mind commercials/lower res viewing.

There is also Fate/Heaven's Feel, but that is a series of movies that hasn't yet been fully released in English. Once those are out in English, definitely watch those. But you might be waiting for a bit on them.

My next recommendation after this is Fate/Grand Order, which is the mobile game. I recommend this for two specific reasons. 1: it's available in English and is free to play (technically, it's a gacha game), so as long as you have a working smartphone you have access to it. 2: it's easily the best for getting a quick taste of most of the characters in the Fate franchise. Everyone shows up for at least a little bit, and while you won't be getting an in-depth story for most of them (story-important servants nonwithstanding), you will see enough to decide if you want to know more about those characters. For example, if you play through Fate/GO and find that you really like Mordred, then you can jump into Fate/Apocrypha and get your fill of Mordred content. You will miss out on some canon in-jokes, but the story of Fate/GO is relatively self-contained so you can play it without being familiar with the rest of the Fate franchise.

As a note: Fate/Go is a really fucking huge time sink to catch up on the story. At this point we are four years into English releases for the game, and even if you discount all of the events (which you can't make up anyway), you're looking at 100+ hours to get through all of the story content that has been released so far. It's worth it (mostly, there is one particular story chapter that is better left skipped), but it's long. Don't try to binge it, take your time and get through the story gradually.

And that's it for my recommendation! TL;DR: watch Unlimited Blade Works and Zero first, maybe Heaven's Feel, and then play Fate/Go. From there, pick your favorites and consume their specific shows/games.

Also, a side note: Most entries into the Fate series are easy to identify because they follow the "Fate/" pattern, but a few do not. "The Lord El-Melloi II Case Files", I'm looking at you.

Considering how unfriendly FGO is for newbies to jump into and catch up on old events even with the eventual rare prism system update, I honestly would recommend that anon look up story and event content on YouTube at this point.

I think reddit has a masterpost of the older fan translation for most of the story. Might be a quicker read.
