here's the tl;dr of what happened

the pcs decided to harvest enough wood to build three ships but the mods had already said in the planet description that there weren't any trees in the city except for the orchard and the park. in order to get the materials for the ships, they HAD to use wood from those places.

the players didn't tell the mods about the ship building plans until the ships were icly already "done," so the mods said the players could have the ships but that would mean that the orchard and the park were completely gone. the players didn't offer to retcon the ships being made, so that was that. law's player was the one that dealt with this part and they accepted the terms.

the mods said that both the orchard and park were needed to build the amount of stuff they wanted to build, and that was meant to be the punishment for doing something big that had effects on the location without talking to the mods about it. it does make sense that the players are butthurt but they brought it upon themselves.

I've done resource management games, but not on DWRP. In the settings I've been in, you have to have your materials lined up and ready before you can ask the mods for finished items from those materials, and there's no way to just say "hey we've got XYZ" without having gone through the mods to get them. So this whole thing sounds really ass-backwards to me where the players could just say "yo we have boats now."

(also orchard trees are terrible for building boats n shit, but that's beside the point)

when this first happened there was a lot of discussion over whether or not the mods should've outright made the players retcon. there's no clear cut answer imho, both ways of handling it had their merits, but from where i'm standing the mods made the call they did because hadriel has been a lax/flexible game in the past and they trusted the players knew to come to them before attempting this sort of thing. if this happened again down the road i'm sure the mods would say tough luck buddy and force a retcon but being that this was the first time it had happened i think they were willing to concede it was a miscommunication and i don't think they wanted to force a bunch of players to retcon a bunch of threads. on top of that there was the idea that the characters would face ic consequences over destroying two locations and a prominent food source but that can only happen if the players will actually take responsibility. the problem now is that the players involved just want to point the finger at each other because "my character would never."

it's worth adding the note that they did this instead of going with the game-wide event that involved getting boats for an expedition, so it caused a problem with players who (with good reason) thought the plot was the only way to get a boat, but now suddenly these other characters had some (and for that reason didn't participate in the boat-acquiring plot themselves.)

it was also made clear in the location post that the only trees other than those that came with the city (the park and orchard) were tiny scraggly things: https://hadriel-ooc.dreamwidth.org/219313.html so it makes no sense why the characters/players would've thought that they could build boats without cutting down everything around, including the orchard.

it was dumb.

one piece characters are so fucking obnoxious across the board. i don't know why anyone even bothers with them.
