Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Skeptical of how "puzzle-solving" is supposed to work in an RP setting. Usually when I see this in games, it's either a race to see who can OOCly solve the puzzle first (regardless of if their character could or not), and doesn't really give much in the way of interesting play.

Also I feel like your rules about pregnancy are over-complicating things. The pregnancy goes into stasis? So they're just walking around with an un-growing fetus in their womb? I'm not saying you have to change this but it's so weird as an inclusion to me...

that's a common rule for pregnancies in-game. the other option is to have the baby in-game which no one wants.

I’ve never been in a game that had a specific rule about pregnancy but I’ve also never seen someone do a pregnancy plot in-game.

I'm a bit curious about your experiences with puzzle-solving elements. Would you like to elaborate? I'd like to see if I can find a way to encourage people to band together to solve the puzzles, if at all possible.

The pregnancy rule, as mentioned above, is a fairly standard rule for games on DW.

da here, i'm aware that "no in-game pregnancies" is a pretty damn common rule in dwrp games, but i'm assuming anon means the "characters who are already pregnant have it go into stasis" rule is kind of awkward.

if a character's like 7 months pregnant or w/e, it's pretty weird to run around with that big belly! and maybe stressful if a character thinks that there's a potentially dead fetus in there.

although to be fair, how common is it for people to play currently-pregnant characters anyway?

i guarantee this rule won't matter in the end. in 10 years i've yet to encounter anyone playing a character who is canonically pregnant.

here's a few off the top of my head:
lori - walking dead
polaris - the gifted
helena - orphan black
multiple tvd characters
and that's just in a small snippet of la fandom. i'm sure throughout video/anime/manga/books and other la, there's a good hefty handful of pregnant female characters that people play in games. i've seen the 'what if my char is pregnant' question on more than one faq by different characters and players, so this is more of a ymmv type thing.

if it were me i'd just say "don't app characters from canonpoints where they are currently pregnant."

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
that would be my rule if I were running a game too.

Just wanted to say that as someone that has been looking for a place for a couple pregnant characters, that "your pregnancy is in stasis" is actually my preferred ruling.

There are some characters that are interesting but don't really have points in canon prior to their pregnancy. And the stasis option saves me from having to actually deal with the child in-game, or the misery of an implied miscarriage via "you're magically not pregnant anymore". I will say that obviously taking them early in the pregnancy is vastly preferable just for having them able to interact with game plot and such to a level that approximates other characters.

So personally "seven months pregnant forever" is not what I tend to envision.

to be fair, most dwrpers would use common sense.

but there's always those select few who would relish that "i'm seven months pregnant forever" angst.

I’ve never been in a game that had a rule that said pregnancies are “in stasis” or anything like that, in fact I used to mod a game that didn’t have a rule about pregnancy at all beyond “talk to us if you want to have that kind of plot” (no one ever did so it’s moot). Like another anon said, I was thinking of a character with an unmoving fetus in their woman at an advanced point in the pregnancy, which I find to be weird.

As for puzzles, it really depends on what kind of puzzle you’re talking about. But ultimately most puzzles have 1 answer, so once someone solves it there’s not much for others to do. You can try to make people band together, but if someone is good at that sort of thing they can probably do it on their own. Unless you mean like, a big mystery and not a literal puzzle, idk what is fun about my character trying to talk about a puzzle only to learn another character already posted the solution because the player is really good at riddles or whatever.
