Interest Check: Entartung v2.0

[personal profile] entartungmods 2018-10-26 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello anons, I'm giving thought to trying another launch attempt for the game I'd attempted in the spring. The main navigation for the game can be viewed here.

The main thing I want to check into is what elements may not have clicked with the general public at the time I first attempted to launch the game. This game is meant to have a lot of puzzle-solving elements and mysteries to uncover, so it's a bit unlike anything else that's out there now.

Feel free to read things over and ask any questions in this thread.

I'd have to look again to see, but my big thing was I never even saw the game until right before it was scrapped. It didn't get a lot of buzz and I'm not sure why that is. I personally don't care about graphics and supposedly the rest of us don't either so the simplicity shouldn't have mattered there. Beyond that I recall enjoying the premise. I'll look again though.

This looks like a game I'd be interested in - I didn't really check it out at the time because my RP schedule has been all booked up, but I'd be interested in this once that clear up in the next few months.

I'm really interested in the puzzle solving conceptually. I don't see anything in your FAQ that looks bad or offputting, though you might want to make it a bit more clear what the actual meat of gameplay will involve, with a well thought out TDM or something like that.

Otherwise, looks cool to me! Sorry it didn't work out the first time.

Thank you for your feedback. I think you're right. I do need to make it more clear that the puzzle-solving and mysteries will play a big role in the gameplay—I pretty much just mention it once, in the premise, I'm realizing now that I'm looking everything back over again. It's also a good idea to tackle making that more clear by putting it into the TDMs.

I hope that if it works out for you to join, that it will be a fun place for you to bring your character! It sort of sounds like the fact that there was such a crowded field of new games last spring made it so a lot of people never even heard of this game until I was forced to abandon the launch.

Yeah it was pretty intense competition-wise, and I think a lot of games got choked out because of it. I respect that you are trying again despite that. It can be demoralizing to go unnoticed. Good luck!

i was actually really interested in the game, but literally no one posted on the tdm and by the time i got there it was a few days late so it seemed doa... perhaps it was just an issue of advertising? i would definitely be interested in giving it a try if you open again!

Skeptical of how "puzzle-solving" is supposed to work in an RP setting. Usually when I see this in games, it's either a race to see who can OOCly solve the puzzle first (regardless of if their character could or not), and doesn't really give much in the way of interesting play.

Also I feel like your rules about pregnancy are over-complicating things. The pregnancy goes into stasis? So they're just walking around with an un-growing fetus in their womb? I'm not saying you have to change this but it's so weird as an inclusion to me...

Re: Interest Check: Entartung v2.0

that's a common rule for pregnancies in-game. the other option is to have the baby in-game which no one wants.

I’ve never been in a game that had a specific rule about pregnancy but I’ve also never seen someone do a pregnancy plot in-game.

I'm a bit curious about your experiences with puzzle-solving elements. Would you like to elaborate? I'd like to see if I can find a way to encourage people to band together to solve the puzzles, if at all possible.

The pregnancy rule, as mentioned above, is a fairly standard rule for games on DW.

da here, i'm aware that "no in-game pregnancies" is a pretty damn common rule in dwrp games, but i'm assuming anon means the "characters who are already pregnant have it go into stasis" rule is kind of awkward.

if a character's like 7 months pregnant or w/e, it's pretty weird to run around with that big belly! and maybe stressful if a character thinks that there's a potentially dead fetus in there.

although to be fair, how common is it for people to play currently-pregnant characters anyway?

da

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
i guarantee this rule won't matter in the end. in 10 years i've yet to encounter anyone playing a character who is canonically pregnant.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
here's a few off the top of my head:
lori - walking dead
polaris - the gifted
helena - orphan black
multiple tvd characters
and that's just in a small snippet of la fandom. i'm sure throughout video/anime/manga/books and other la, there's a good hefty handful of pregnant female characters that people play in games. i've seen the 'what if my char is pregnant' question on more than one faq by different characters and players, so this is more of a ymmv type thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
if it were me i'd just say "don't app characters from canonpoints where they are currently pregnant."

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
that would be my rule if I were running a game too.

Just wanted to say that as someone that has been looking for a place for a couple pregnant characters, that "your pregnancy is in stasis" is actually my preferred ruling.

There are some characters that are interesting but don't really have points in canon prior to their pregnancy. And the stasis option saves me from having to actually deal with the child in-game, or the misery of an implied miscarriage via "you're magically not pregnant anymore". I will say that obviously taking them early in the pregnancy is vastly preferable just for having them able to interact with game plot and such to a level that approximates other characters.

So personally "seven months pregnant forever" is not what I tend to envision.

I’ve never been in a game that had a rule that said pregnancies are “in stasis” or anything like that, in fact I used to mod a game that didn’t have a rule about pregnancy at all beyond “talk to us if you want to have that kind of plot” (no one ever did so it’s moot). Like another anon said, I was thinking of a character with an unmoving fetus in their woman at an advanced point in the pregnancy, which I find to be weird.

As for puzzles, it really depends on what kind of puzzle you’re talking about. But ultimately most puzzles have 1 answer, so once someone solves it there’s not much for others to do. You can try to make people band together, but if someone is good at that sort of thing they can probably do it on their own. Unless you mean like, a big mystery and not a literal puzzle, idk what is fun about my character trying to talk about a puzzle only to learn another character already posted the solution because the player is really good at riddles or whatever.

I also missed the announcement last spring, even though I was looking for mystery/intrigue games at the time; but as I recall, there was a new game coming out every week, so it was hectic.

The pages are clear and well-organized. Nice coding and images, too! (Links at the bottom of Welcome are broken, but that's easily fixed.) Also, I am happy to see the game is open to a wide age range, since younger characters can be great in mystery games!

Only question that comes to mind is that the ac seems a little low for a game that involves plotting and puzzles. I was wondering if you had a reason for that?

Seconding that more detail on the TDM prompts in the future would be nice. Like, specific places/events as opposed to general concepts/ideas.

[personal profile] entartungmods 2018-10-26 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for your comments! It's true that the AC is a little low, but historically I've found this is a good amount to ensure people are trying to participate without being too much for some to handle.

I did want to open the game up to suitable characters, rather than characters that might fit an arbitrary age limit. I think there are some people who play extraordinary child characters who have been seeking a game to put them in, and I'd like to be able to fill that niche.

I will definitely put some thought into TDM prompts before opening them back up again. That was something I was weak on to begin with—I tend to want to save all my ideas for future plots, but I need to be able to use the TDM to sell the game to potential players. I need to come up with something unique that will sell the spirit of the game without giving away plot.

And thanks so much for your compliments!

One of the main problems the last time this was up was that the TDM prompts were thin and lacking in detail. They made the world seem like not that much thought had gone into it, and didn't really offer enough to do or have enough hooks.

What looks simple and succinct to you can look lazy to others. That doesn't mean that your game actually was thin, lazy, or bland, just that the TDM prompts didn't show it off to best advantage.

If you look at the games that are taking off, TDM prompts are usually a couple of paragraphs of clear, descriptive prose and give a much stronger sense of the setting and the game itself. Deeper, richer, more variety. Admittedly, it's hard to hit the sweet spot, because it's also possible for TDM prompts to be overwritten and to have extraneous details that players don't need. And while a game shouldn't live or die by fancy coding, formatting and concept art tend to be elements of successful TDMs.

Some other things you can do: if your game's entire basis is puzzles, then put some into the TDM. Also, find a way to make the TDM game canon. Tie it in with events. Make it attractive for current players to tag people there.

I have been giving this a lot of thought since I posted this interest check, as I've received several comments like this about the TDM I had posted in May. I have a tendency to want to hoard details I've come up with for the actual plot of the game, which caused me to withhold things from being given out as samples for the TDM, and this was definitely to my detriment when I posted it. It's hard to know how much to feed out as crumbs to whet players' appetites without it being like spoilers to future plots or puzzles, but I think I'm getting there now.

The TDM I now have planned for January contains more hooks, a puzzle, more in-game inspired elements, and I will definitely include language about the scenarios being used for future game canon. I believe that the inclusion of this will also help me view the TDM as a necessary game element.

Thanks for your comment and interest!
