Personally, I get people sticking up for Twilight, but 50 Shades’ bad first person writing is so blatantly grating enough that even that alone puts it firmly into “the only entertainment value in this book is making fun of it” territory for me.

So many movies and books are bad though. What makes this one so much worthier of hate than anything else?

When you hate on the film, you're attacking one of only two movies that were aimed at women that entire year. Think about it.

don't do that. don't equate 'aimed at women' as being worthy of anything special. that's like calling any female who didn't vote for clinton a traitor to their gender.

just because it's 'aimed' at a demographic doesn't exempt it from being a shoddy piece of work.

I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying the opposite, that it's specifically *hated* because it's aimed at women and that it should be treated the same as everything else. There are plenty of contemporaries which are just as bad, if not worse. They get forgotten. Female-aimed things get hated hard and ridiculed and mocked for years.

Look at pop culture: Twilight, 50 Shades, Mortal Instruments, Magic Mike, One Direction, Justin Bieber, The Beatles, THE COLOR PINK. It's crazy.

This is really damn true, and it's been going for more than just decades. IIRC, some oldschool intellectuals from the XIX century openly said that women should not be allowed to read novels because they were too stupid to distinguish fiction from reality. Which sounds suspiciously simnilar to the shit that purity-obsessed "fandom police" idiots say right now.

I think there's a difference between "women are unable to distinguish fiction from reality" and "people's attitude's are often shaped by the media they consume."

You're right that there's a lot of inherent misogyny in what things in particular get SO MUCH hatred, but you can't just say everyone who hates something does so for that reason and not because whatever it is just objectively sucks.

not that anon, but yeah, they did, especially in the early 60s. there was an almost immediate and aggressive backlash against the beatles when they first got huge in america, in particular, and not just from concerned parents who hated all rock n roll, but from the american ultra-macho rockabilly scene as well.

Being one of two movies aimed at women makes it even WORSE, not better, because it's taking advantage of girls and women who don't have a whole lot of other options and pushing a narrative about how an unhealthy relationship is the ideal romance.

Sure, other movies and books do the exact same thing, but that makes them just as shit as Twilight.

This right here. My 16 year old cousin loved 50 Shades and was in love with Grey. Every time I visited she'd just gush about him being perfect.

I tried to hint that he was an asshole and emotionally abusive, but her blinders were firmly stuck. And guess what? Her first real boyfriend was emotionally abusive and an asshole.

I'm not talking about other bad things, though. I'm talking about one bad thing, and other things being bad doesn't make the 50 Shades book not horrendously badly written.

I'm also not hating on the film, TBH. I went to see it with a group of friends who wanted to hatewatch it and... I actually kind of liked it. I know it's been said before, but it being a film stripped away the whole "oh god, the writing is so bad" thing, they tweaked a number of cringey moments to feel more understandable or actually romantic, and I found it well-acted.
