Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

don't do that. don't equate 'aimed at women' as being worthy of anything special. that's like calling any female who didn't vote for clinton a traitor to their gender.

just because it's 'aimed' at a demographic doesn't exempt it from being a shoddy piece of work.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying the opposite, that it's specifically *hated* because it's aimed at women and that it should be treated the same as everything else. There are plenty of contemporaries which are just as bad, if not worse. They get forgotten. Female-aimed things get hated hard and ridiculed and mocked for years.

Look at pop culture: Twilight, 50 Shades, Mortal Instruments, Magic Mike, One Direction, Justin Bieber, The Beatles, THE COLOR PINK. It's crazy.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
that's mostly because they're shitty and shittily done. and you're naming a small handful of things, which is asinine, since that shifts the original argument you had of 'within the last year'. i'm also going to argue the whole beatles thing and pink actually started out as a color for boys, so...

fact check yourself and stay to one argument.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Because young girls started deliberately hating pink this century because it was a boy color...

Don't be deliberately dumb, anon.

This is really damn true, and it's been going for more than just decades. IIRC, some oldschool intellectuals from the XIX century openly said that women should not be allowed to read novels because they were too stupid to distinguish fiction from reality. Which sounds suspiciously simnilar to the shit that purity-obsessed "fandom police" idiots say right now.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's a difference between "women are unable to distinguish fiction from reality" and "people's attitude's are often shaped by the media they consume."

wake me up when there's just as much media handwringing about all the dudebros who fundamentally misunderstood what fight club was about

Re: +1

Something else not getting the hate it should doesn't mean something else that does get the hate shouldn't.

naah

i hate 50 shades but i still am tired of hearing all the condescending criticism of it from people who are mysteriously silent about the massive amount of toxic male-targeted media

somehow it's only women and teen girls reading books that explore sexuality and relationship fantasies that we have moral panics about

because as the other anon pointed out, there is still a pervasive infantilizing idea in society that women and teen girls are too stupid and impressionable to be able to tell apart fantasy and reality

uhhhhh

rape-lay and other rape-themed media? or hentai/porn in general?
women in india sick of "stalker bugs girl until she fucks him" bollywood flicks encouraging Nice Guys to Nice Guy it up?
the perverted side of the furry fandom?
incel communities?
gun nuts?
wicked prostitute she-devils corrupting men with their std-encrusted vaginas because they're Just That Evil?

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2018-10-25 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
i can't speak to the india thing since i don't know about it

if you think rape fetish porn get even remotely the same amount of moralizing mainstream criticism as dumb romance books in america you're dreaming though

the only time people started being seriously critical of incels rather than ignoring them was when they literally started murdering people and they still have apologists in mass media even after that saying that maybe they have a point you guys and we should consider giving them government mandated girlfriends to placate them

the prostitute thing is also another example of misogyny in action

Thank you. It's misogynist female-hating trash and I'm so done with it.

why are you acting like only female interests get this treatment and not male interests too?

Do you not remember how hard Suicide Squad got slammed? Or Showgirls? Batman and Robin? The Transformers films? Or are you gonna wiggle out of it by claiming 'oh, those were were targeted at everyone'?

showgirls was a disaster all around but you cannot seriously be comparing to transformers receiving the same disdain that twilight or 50 shades got. like we’re there groups of snobby gatekeepers saying how bad transformers were for science fiction buffs, and if you want to see a realistic and healthy portrayal of a transforming robots, you should try some other fiction?

the thing about those films that were definitely catered to a male audience was that it was acceptable to like them until they came out and people realized they suck.

one thing people seem to miss is that it’s perfectly fine to trash something for being bad writing, but if someone genuinely enjoys something, don’t make them feel shitty or ashamed for liking it. when my preteen cousins were into twilight during the time the movies were coming out, i didn’t make fun of them for reading twilight or tell them they needed to read better books. “don’t be a dick” seems to be a hard concept for people to grasp.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon, preteens of any gender shouldn't be reading shit like Twilight anyway. And I'd rather my hypothetical teenage child read something that isn't a thinly disguised Mormon allegory, where the heroine is punished for having sex (consensual and even after marriage). I'd rather they read Dracula, or even Carmilla if they want a vampire fix.

You're right that there's a lot of inherent misogyny in what things in particular get SO MUCH hatred, but you can't just say everyone who hates something does so for that reason and not because whatever it is just objectively sucks.

You think The Beatles get hated and mocked? Are you stupid?

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
not that anon, but yeah, they did, especially in the early 60s. there was an almost immediate and aggressive backlash against the beatles when they first got huge in america, in particular, and not just from concerned parents who hated all rock n roll, but from the american ultra-macho rockabilly scene as well.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-28 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Just another passing music anon, but I'm going to add to that by saying that the Beatles also get a lot of hate now from younger people who are sick of the hype and don't understand what they contributed to popular music as a whole. The Beatles are obviously enormously popular, but they did and do get hated and mocked for different reasons.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2018-10-28 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
man i'm not even like a music history buff or whatever but even i know that beatlemania came with more than its fair share of backlash
