Horror survival

(Anonymous) 2018-10-22 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
The basis of this horror game is surviving in a limited/jamjar environment looking to break them down. While things would be plentiful at first, that would change quickly in ways that will force the characters to work together to find resources that some may or may not have access to. At the same time, there will be alternate versions of canon characters that will be working with the other force to defeat the canon types. The AUs can be rule 63, good vs evil, took a different turn in life, or whatever. While the AU versions are under the environment's control, they do have minds and morals of their own. They can choose to rebel and take the punishment.

Once a month there will be two events - one that will go into another world/canon for resources and the other materials to face down the environment to survive. The main (or other world) will be for those who have time to work. The other in-world event will be for those with less time due to work/exams/cons/world doesn't appeal to them/whatever. The final two weeks of the month will be for wrapping up event threads, working among themselves or facing down the AU versions.

A network will exist but be monitored since the powers that be made it. Characters can develop a code or other ways to get around said monitoring. Could just not give a damn they're being monitored so they can communicate.

Those controlling the world will occasionally speak to characters via the network to lie or tell the truth. If a player is on hiatus and their character in a coma, the Powers That Be might send out messages claiming to be from them. Belief or not, rescue or leave to their fate is up to the players to decide what is worth it for them.

................... no

just no

no AU versions of characters. no... over the top, ridiculous complicated setting/plot

messing with the network is neat (characters lying or pretending to be there when they aren't, or messing with the others in a psychological manner), but only done by the players themselves when it comes to their character and with teh agreement of whoever they are replying to

dont make it complicated, and definitely no AUs

we get it, anon, you don't like AUs. calm down.

what you want must be incredibly boring if you keep saying "no" to everything.

this sounds like it could be an interesting concept but idk how well it would be executed. do you have a plan for that or plan to have co-mods to help you with it?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-22 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I do have a plan as well as a co-mod to discuss things with, catch what I don't and divide the duties between us both. I'm also reading up on the advice given and taking a look at my outlay to see where it can be improved.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-22 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
good luck with it! i would love to see an actual horror game around again.

This sounds interesting, but I'm skeptical of how the AU characters would work in practice if they're meant to be a large part of the game. How are you envisioning the mechanics of that, anon?

The AU versions work for/with the NPC side. In theory, they'll be equal to the 'canon' character cast in size. If they start to outnumber the canon side, we'll cap them. I don't see them being any bigger or more important than the canon characters.

Okay, from the original comment I had gotten the impression that there would be an AU equivalent for each canon character in the game. That's not the case?

...No, wait, are you just trying to say that players can app AU characters? Which will be placed in the "enemy" faction, so it's PvP. Am I understanding this right?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-23 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
You're right on the second count. Sorry about not being clearer on that. Players can app either a canon version or an AU canon character. The AU versions work for/with the 'enemy'.

dont do that. thats a terrible idea.

its one thing if the player of the character can also play that character's AU version (in fact, that could be somewhat cool). but letting two players play the same character, one AU and one not? thats. not good at all. and the wank in the game is going to go through the roof.

i wouldnt want anything to do with a game like that, which is a shame because more horror/survival games would be a blessing.

i'm not so much against the idea of au versions in a game (there are already games that allow duplicates, incl au versions), but i'm noping at the notion of them being in competition with each other. 'canon vs au' is just begging for some highlandery wanky bullshit, and i guarantee it will definitely cross the ic/ooc line. especially when you have canon as the good version and au as the bad.

there would be no wank, there have been games in the past (and ones still running now) that allow two versions of a single character be played in much the same way.

it's not really any different than people playing multiple iterations of the same character, like just how mnay versions of the same Peter Parker Spiderman could theoretically be apped to the same game.

Re: da

multiple versions of characters can work on a limited basis, but it sounds like having multiple versions is a major part of this game's plot and the mod intends to balance canons and aus. so there would be a lot more multiples than in pretty much other game.

also, instead of doing native aus like fade rift (which are usually pretty low-wank), this game would allow the wankiest possible kinds of aus: rule 63, canon divergence what-if scenarios, different powers, etc. then you end up with offensive stereotype rule 63 peter parker, woobie good jedi kylo ren and rape backstory steve rogers.

and on top of that, they're all supposed to be evil... so you can assume that 75% the players will want their "evil" characters to be good or neutral.

All of these are good points. I had wanted to stay away from the same person playing both versions since Eway already has that or had it last I checked. I do see where the AUs could end up being off base, and I had hoped that the AU rule of needing to still be relatable to the canon character might take care of that. I'm afraid OCs versus canon would make it worse.

The 'evil' term is difficult to explain except that the powers that be will punish them and the like if they catch them cutting out of line. When I get this second group of player characters sorted out, it'll make more sense. It's looking more like canon for both sides. Thanks for the help, anons!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly that still sounds like a wank magnet/not really fun?

Speaking as someone who's been itching to play villains doing bad things: If players can app characters to play on the evil side, why not just let them app villains instead of nebulous "AU characters"? I don't care whether or not AUs are allowed, I've been in games that did the "there can be one OU and one AU of each character" and it was fine, but splitting it up by OU = good and AU = bad seems silly.

The original idea had been for it to be a canon sort of world, and the setting was responsible for the AU versions and could have some control over the AU versions. The thought had been that any villain OU characters would be too headstrong to do someone else's dirty work or have their own agendas.

That said, I think we're going to end up doing away with the AU idea and go straight canon for characters. We're getting together this weekend to do some re-writes and see what works best.
